My first 'real' home theater-type TV was a 36" Sony Wega CRT. It cost 2500 (and weighed almost as much). That was maybe twenty years ago.

Several years after that I spent around $1800 on a 50" Samsung DLP.

Next up was $1500 for a 55" LG LCD which I still have and still love.

But I'm going to be replacing it this summer and the most likely candidate is a 65" TCL UHD for around a grand.

WTF

(and that's just direct displays, the improvements to projectors have been just as insane. with the sole exception of black levels (and that's definitely not a small exception) projectors are so much easier to set up and use)

I'm absolutely not downplaying the importance of audio but I have to admit, my cranky old man side is starting to chime in more frequently.

I'm not quite to the point of muttering 'I've only got two ears, why do I need 18 freaking speakers' but I'm not far from it either.

I'll probably wire for 11.1 during my next round of upgrades but I think 7.1 will probably be my ceiling for a while.

Problem is, we've heard it all before and there is no new audience since the thread got moved. Both digital and physical media are evolving and working alongside each other just fine. So at this point you are just wagging the dog.
I would say there are more new people since the thread moved but you are wrong with your presumption about my methods anyway.

Yeah that's true. I'm not able to appreciate it now but I plan to upgrade someday. Although I don't think Lawrence of Arabia or It Happened One Night would benefit much from the upgrade if/when they do come out on UHD BD.

Remember when I said a credible case could be made that these damn kids today care more about the big screen experience than us film lovers do?

This is the kind of stuff I was talking about.

These damn kids today are the ones keeping theaters open. If it wasn't them there would be a lot fewer big screens.

Wait, this can't be right.

Frequent movie-goers are more likely to own all these new-fangled devices? And they still go to see a movie in a theater at least once a month?

That's a lot of trips to the theater for people who don't care about the big screen experience.

Weird.
A lot of these kids are just going to be alone in the dark with the opposite s*x.

I take those stats with a grain of salt because of that.

My wife's nieces and nephews are that age and they do not care about cinema. The passion just isn't there.

They may see an occasional movies but they care more about their phones and social media.

All of what you said here is assumption and anecdotal observation and nothing more. I take what you say here with a truckload of salt.

I can offer my own anecdotes about the behavior of young people as regards theater attendance and mobile device usage, but it also would prove nothing.

Anecdotes are fine as little entertaining stories, so long as they are not extrapolated to encompass an entire state, nation, or even planet. It is just beyond ridiculous for me to say that my observations about human behavior in the small area that I regularly traverse hold true everywhere. And don't forget the possibility that we may interpret what we see incorrectly to begin with.

Statistics compiled from across the nation about cinema attendance demographics is factual data that is vital to the film industry. They do not collect this information just for the fun of it- it is beneficial for them to know who comprises their audience.

All businesses want to know who their customers are and they put considerable effort and expense into gathering that data.

And that's a pity when businesses could save all that time and money doing extensive research and instead just ask what flyry, anchovy21, and Vilya observe in the immensely wide circles that we routinely travel in.

Here is something to ponder:

TacoCat.jpg

18 of the movies I ordered this week arrived today, including the Harry Potter 4K 8 film collection that I ordered from Amazon.uk. Harry Potter got here in just three days! Impressive speed and lots of new toys to play with just in time for the weekend.

Understand. Not that many titles really make good use of 7.1 and it gets worse for 7.1.4. I have 7.2.4 and most likely will stay at this level for the forseeable future. I really like the Yamaha CX-A5100 AVP with its 12 scenes and browser setup.

You know there's already comic book apps that are under $10 a month for unlimited comics right? You can get "e-books" from the library and have subscription services for audio and e-books too?

How does any of this effect TVs? Why would an industry make you pick one or the other when they'd just lose money?

These comments...and the rebuttals, I really cannot fathom your point on how this would affect TV's.

So I searched high and low, what is the biggest display you have? Most here post their set up, could you tell us what you have?

I am on the other side of the street here. Even though there are some titles I am not interested in, there still are over 250 Atmos / DTS-X blu ray or UHD titles out there, with just under 20 being released this month. Processors can do some impressive things with 5.1 tracks as well. For example, I am working through Expanse season 1 on Blu-ray, which is a 5.1 title, but Dolby’s up-mixer does a nice job sending the proper information to the overheads. Rear surrounds are also very active when called upon. This past weekend, I had some folks over, so inevitably we ended up in the toy room. Amongst my demos, I slipped in a couple 5.1 movies just to show everyone how immersive they can be as well.

I certainly understand speakers everywhere is not everyone’s end result due to logistical constraints or even desires, but when setup correctly and calibrated, it is a damn cool thing.

The Yamaha is a really nice processor by the way

I remember having one of these as a young kid, but I only had maybe half a dozen discs for it. I've no idea what happened to it.
