The Green Inferno was okay, but I have trouble taking Eli Roth's "dude bro" brand of horror seriously. I love listening to Roth's commentaries, I love his essays on horror movies, and I enjoy how he pays homage to classics in his films, but his movies simply do not scare me.

Cannibal Holocaust has a real sense of danger to it that is not present in Roth's film.

To Eli Roth's credit, though, his film was one of the reasons why I was compelled to seek out Cannibal Holocaust in the first place.

There's also a metalpak edition from XT. That is the cheapest that the best edition of Cannibal Holocaust can be found at.

Cannibal Holocaust and The Beyond given deluxe releases based on more than ten year old scans. Ferox gets a new scan. Pieces gets a 4K scan...Grindhouse, you should be ashamed of yourselves.

If anybody want to buy the best edition of this classic, don't buy Grindhouse.

At least he serves something from time to time, I suppose.

Not sure mate, there seems to be some artificial grain going on with the XT release?

Look to the top of this grab, not sure what is going on there?

The Grindhouse edition does not handle the grain well at all, it's almost re-touched, and it's not the case that the XT has fake grain.

That's not artificial grain, that's better encoding. It's still like putting make-up on a pig though.

The master itself isn't very good at all and has weird artifacts/noise not even in the old Superbit DVD.

To be honest, the fact that Grindhouse remastered one of the worst cannibal films out there (Cannibal Ferox) and left Cannibal Holocaust with an old sub-par scan sickens me. I'm not holding out much hope that we'll ever get anything better though, unfortunately..

Not sure what is going on at the top of the grab then as the grain disappears on the AT/XT?

Disappears? The grain is much better on the XT release.

Look to the top of the grabs. Surely you can not have natural film grain that disappears like this?

Comparing the 2 you can see that digital scanner noise that has plagued many European releases. It's not fake grain it's just interference that occurred during the scan. Seems to be the same master though. Other than a contrast boost on the GH I don't see any real difference between the 2. The XT release does look a bit more pleasing to the eye but not enough to make me buy another release. At some point I have to stop nitpicking tiny transfer details and just enjoy the film.

I really like the Carl Yorke interview on Disc 2 of the Grindhouse Releasing Blu-ray. He goes more in-depth about the making of the film than most in the other interviews, and he establishes a likable rapport.

My thoughts exactly, after taking the time to look at the above screenshots. The differences look negligible to me, and they would probably be less noticeable when viewed on my 49" 4K television screen.

I'm glad that people are bringing the Austrian edition to our attention, but the Grindhouse Releasing disc is still great-looking. (Even if the movie itself is not altogether pleasant to watch!)

Caps indeed does show a difference, but in motion, the improvement is even more evident. Trust me. Those of us who own both editions know what I mean.

This isn't a case of a "tiny transfer detail"

Disappointed that there are no native actors in the interviews, but I can certainly understand why it was not necessarily feasible to track the actors down, especially since they weren't exactly professional actors. I'd like to know their take on the experience.

Cannibal Holocaust and The Beyond are the only Grindhouse Blu-rays which I wouldn't describe as being "great-looking", which is a shame since they're Grindhouse's two biggest titles.

There's also the weird issue with missing footage on Cannibal Holocaust which is included on the disc but not included in the main feature. There's word that it was damaged/destroyed when Grindhouse scanned the negative for their initial DVD release resulting in it not being in the master.

I'd definitely welcome definitive packages of both films from Grindhouse. It would be unlikely, but they could go the 88 Films route and start an Indie Gogo page.

Since "The Last Road to Hell" footage was the most vilely disturbing scene of Cannibal Holocaust to me, it doesn't break my heart that five seconds of that footage is missing from the main feature. It does strike me as strange that it's not included in the main feature, but is included in the extras, though.

I bought the Grindhouse Releasing Blu-ray of The Beyond a few weeks ago, but it's still in my unwatched stack. I should get cracking on that soon.

I am not brave enough to ever watch the film. The stories of the animal torture turn me off. Heck, I feel like I need to go see my shrink when I see dead armadillos on the side of the road and other road kill.
