Platinum Dunes Will No Longer Remake Horror Films; Promises More Original Genre Films Such As A QUIET PLACE

Quote:
Platinum Dunes, the company founded by Michael Bay, Andrew Form and Brad Fuller, first rose to prominence courtesy of a series of horror franchise remakes, beginning with The Texas Chainsaw Massacre in 2003. The Amityville Horror, The Hitcher, Friday the 13th and A Nightmare on Elm Street all followed in its wake.

More recently, however, Plantium Dunes has brought us The Purge franchise and the recently released A Quiet Place. In a recent interview with CinePOP, Fuller and Form say that original genre entertainment is their main focus going forward and that they will no longer be remaking classic horror films, such as those mentioned above.

We’ve rebooted enough. We’ve done all of our [rebooted] horror movies. We’re not going to be doing that anymore.

While their visions weren't successful critically, they were somewhat successful both at the box office. Possibly due to their remakes' reception the pair have decided to forge a new path. The duo wants to focus on original stories, like their recent success A Quiet Place, as they explain below:

For us, as a company, we’re always looking for original material. And the idea of finding something original was important for us. We made [A Quiet Place] where there’s two to three minutes of talking in the movie, where sound is a full character, and it feels like audiences are really responding to those ingredients.

What do you think about the production company's new direction? Would you have liked to see them remake any other horror films? What do you think about their horror-remake endeavours?

Hopefully they'll remake A Quiet Place in a few years.

Works for me. Didn’t really care for any of their reboots. Had a lot of hope for the Friday the 13th reboot but was ultimately let down.

I believe that Victor Miller and his bullshit that he's pulling at the current point of time is the reason that it's taking so long to get another Friday the 13th off of the ground.

Absolutely! I loved the remake (and to a lesser extent, its sequel). The original I can respect for being groundbreaking at the time, but I just didn't care for it at all.

I like the remake better than the original too. I do respect the 1974 movie but I have never been a real fan of it.

Jason Blum of Blumhouse is the big guy on the block in terms of successful horror. You could say he bailed the genre out. I wouldn't be so quick to reject him. Besides, he's a producer, not a director, so you can still snag fresh blood.

I rather see the cats at A24 and Neon take a stab at a Friday the 13th remake.

Yeah, it sounds like real out of left field suggestions, but I rather see that than "Friday the 13th: Truth or Dare Edition".

Another Friday the 13th with no new movie to watch, and nothing on the horizon.

The ball is in Michael's court. I would guess that if Halloween 2018 is a big hit, that could jumpstart the Friday franchise. So let's hope the legalities surrounding the property are cleared up soon.

Well it had its flaws, I also enjoyed Texas Chainsaw 3D, more than the 1974 original, that's for sure.

Though there are things I liked about 3D, particularly Daddario as the final girl, it messes up the timeline of the films and by making the Sawyer family basically victims
[Show spoiler]and Leatherface the hero of the film by the end
it takes away from what made the franchise interesting, and the reveal of Leatherface is quite underwhelming despite the interesting premise. I'd prefer every film with the exception of Next Generation (despite McConaughey's bats**t performance) over 3D. I do prefer the remake over the original though as the kids come out as more developed and charming characters and the hitchhiker angle more believable and creepy.

I do think A24 could do a good job with a F13 remake considering their track record (Green Room, The Witch, It Comes At Night, Ex Machina, Under the Skin) with the right filmmaker. Neon, I'm no so sure as they haven't done much genre fare but seem to float between comedy and drama.

The trouble is, none of those films you've mentioned fit with the lurid popcorniness so inherent to a Friday the 13th film. If A24 wanted to make their own spin on a slasher then fair play, but they've done nothing that indicates that that would be a good fit for them. The closest they've gotten was Green Room but even that is more of a thriller than anything else.
