This is probably my most anticipated release in UHD. I hope at the very least the Theatrical cut of Superman II gets a UHD release in the future as well, as I still prefer it to the Donner cut, despite its flaws.

Definitely. It's moronic that WB never gave the Blu-ray a stand alone release and replaced it in sets with the Donner cut. The Donner cut is a nice 'what if' but it has no place in the continuity of the other films.

In which set did the Donner cut replace the theatrical?

Glad we’re getting the theatrical version. Soon we’ll be reading complaints that the PQ is too dark

But if any music other than ‘Rock Around The Clock’ is playing on the kid’s car radio during the early Smallville scene, no sale to me.

Yes, I realize it’s a bit hypocritical to hold both of those views. Pure theatrical should be pure theatrical. But the enhanced credits sound is still swooshes and the boom, only more dramatic. The switch away from ‘Rick Around The Clock’ is a more fundamental change to the actual storyline.

They actually took out 'Rick Around The Clock' as they didn't have the rights to use it. 'Rock Around The Clock' was then used. However, now for the 4K UHD they've decided to change the song altogether and went with Sabotage instead.

The Donner cut of Superman II is little more than an ego thing. If he had not succumbed to WB, made Superman I fall behind and waste the Salkind money allowing WB to step and take control he would have had his way. He is like a child demanding the best of both worlds, yet breaking a contract WB had with the Salkind for a only and final edit.
There's a reason crew taped over Donner's name on his director's chair with gaffer's tape so it read "Hard On"

In your opinion, he’s not a child just because he was standing up for the integrity of his work!

I think we've all seen on numerous occasions what happens when the Salkinds are left w/o checks and balances...

No. He sold out. He was hired by the Salkinds. WB made him an offer and he took that offer allowing the Salkinds to lose money where WB was able to come in and finish financing.
No one in Hollywood like the idea that Europeans were the only ones to be able to put together a purely American hero film. They saw what Donner was doing and plotted against the Salkinds. Donner was fired for wasting money. It's that plain and simple.
I didn't say he did make a great film - he just an S.O.B.
The Salkinds signed with WB that they had final edit. Donner broke that contract years later and the Salkinds sued. They won, millions. Simple.
In interim, Donner got an office within WB, made films, some bombs, some very successful. That's all.

His comments just got deleted from all three news announcements, so I deleted my original post containing his quote.

Every time he comes back from a suspension, he starts up again. His inability to learn amazes me as much as the unhinged anger in his comments.

The 9 film Batman/Superman set from 2016, the Superman 1, 2, and Returns triple feature, and the last few DVD sets I think.

I have seen some of the negative comments regarding the new release. But if you would please, let's have more positive comments than negative. Yes, we are going to get a new mix based on that original 70mm 6 track mix very few people saw in '78. And yes, I'm sure the picture will be great in 4K (I have a 4K player that can play on any TV...namely the X Box One, thus the standard HDTV I have looks as great as it is gonna look, even better).

And yes, we all know the "final cut" situation, but remember, (and I will say it once more)...as Ilya said himself in the DVD commentary, even though the Salkinds had final cut privilege, they (in the case of SUPERMAN) worked hand in hand with both the studio and the director to produce a cut that was in the best interests of the audience, and the resulting 143 min. theatrical cut stands as a work of its own, and we must see it as such.

As for "Rock Around The Clock"'s absence in the TV cut...I can only conject the Salkinds dealt with licensing issues with that and "Only You" (which plays later in the Smallville scenes), which is why they were replaced. However, the music that did replace "Clock" in the TV cut (it is original John Williams source music, by the way, and not some generic music someone pulled from a stock library) sounds more suited to the time in which the scene is set, 1965. If we take the theatrical cut seriously, then maybe the Smallville radio station started to play Boss Radio (the format founded by media magnate Bill Drake)!!!

I'm looking forward to this release, and I hope they release all the Christopher Reeve Superman films in UHD. The 3rd and 4th are cheesy and campy, but will remain part of my childhood memories.

I'm kind of over doing double dips in the 4K era. As soon as Warner does a version containing BOTH the cuts that have been available since around 2000 on home video, I'll go ahead and get it. Not going to buy theatrical only when we all know they're holding out the other version for a later date.
