I've made my peace with HDR doing its thang, just as with transfers from negative providing dat sweet sweet detail, and if it happens to line up with what I've read in American Cinematographer or whatever (Vilmos Zsigmond's original 1978 piece on The Deer Hunter was very interesting reading after having just watched the UHD, 'interesting' in a good way I should add) then fine, if it doesn't then as long as it's not a Friedkin'ed pastel nightmare or has overt technical problems caused by the HDR then I'm good.
How about 2.0:1 ratios for all!

I certainly do. It’s the debate that keeps on giving. I personally love Atmos, would love for Halloween to receive it but I also want the original track since I’ll like watch my copy dozens of times I would alternate.

What do you mean? The inclusion or exclusion of it?

I own the DTS "Anniversary Edition" version of the DVD (the DD and DTS variants were sold separately per Universal's policy back then) and can't remember if there was a full-length documentary on it...I think it had some notes by Spielberg or something if I recall correctly...

I totally respect the purists for wanting the original audio (of any title), and I would think it would be best to include the most number of tracks to satisfy all camps (given compression limits and such)...however I personally always select a surround remix when available, as it's just my preference. To me, if done correctly, a surround remix sourced from original audio stems can sound very much like the legacy sound design but add some environmental effect that is most pleasing...

A good example of this is, of course, the original Halloween that we're discussing...the Chace surround remix prepared for the THX DVD was done right, not crushing the "charm" of the original mono yet adding subtle cues where appropriate (the rain, some punchy LFE, etc.). I found the same with Jaws and even 1979's Amityville Horror (on the MGM Special Edition DVD release of Amityville Horror, as included in the Amityville Horror Collection box set which I own, an added Dolby Digital 5.1 surround track was placed alongside the original 2.0 mono, and that's always my preferred go-to mix, as it adds shotgun and rain effects into the surrounds that really "up" the experience of the film IMO compared to the mono track).

Now, some remixes just go hog-wild and do a disservice to original audio stems, I will concede -- but if done correctly and with some restraint, I think surround audio can work with some older titles we're used to hearing in mono.

Sorry if this was posted already...

John Carpenter's Halloween is getting re-released to theaters for its 40th Anniversary starting September 27th courtesy of CineLifeEntertainment in association with Compass International Pictures and Trancas International Films.

This will be the restored and remastered 4K digital print which was supervised by Dean Cundey and streets on 4K UHD on 9/25.

What a time to be a Halloween fan - seeing Carpenter's classic on the big screen again, followed by one of the most anticipated sequels in the franchise three weeks later. Not to mention Lionsgate's 4K UHD release, and Scream Factory's 4K remasters of Halloween II and Halloween III on blu-ray!

Soooo... is this possibly some sort of confirmation that the UHD Blu-ray is sourced from this same 4k restoration supervised by Dean Cundey?

I'll try to remember which titles I've seen this happen in. It's awful, because it looks hilariously bad, like it makes the film makers look like complete idiots, except it's not their fault because when timed properly as day-for-night, it works.

I always hated day-for-night but I get why they did it. These days I hate it for a different reason - the blu-ray releases sometimes screw it up!

And if people would stop quoting him, I wouldn't have to see his posts even though he's on my ignore list.

He's just an abrasive, toxic person.

I imagine Halloween (2018) will get a SteelBook release. Since this is coming out in 4k what are the chances of a 4k SteelBook to this movie coming out? I wish I knew. I'd pass on the FYE exclusive SteelBook if so.

I haven't forgotten...but we have it on the blu-ray.

The 5.1 is atrocious. A whole new movie experience.

Hmmm. New 4K restoration supervised by Cundey is followed by a new 4K UHD release? I'm sure there's no link between the two whatsoever

I wonder if Dean Candy has changed the colour timing again. I thought that the 35th anniversary looked really nice but the odd scene looked a little too muted.

I hope Dean Candy wasn't allowed near the building since he wasn't the DP
