I think Vilya is saying for someone who rarely sings the praises of disc to be buying the disc (this case 4K) seems slightly odd.

It was not intended so much as a criticism, but it seems a little odd for such a staunch fan of digital to want the disc over the code. I am curious as to the criteria he uses when making those choices.

If he really feels that the code and the disc are essentially equal, and that discs take up so much precious space, why choose the disc and jettison the code?

I see that my post has spurred a little movement on this thread. Perhaps I am like a thread laxative? There's a flattering thought!

That's only odd if you look at this stuff as some kind of religious war with bright clear impenetrable lines between the righteous and the heretics.

Which is dumb, of course.

If I'm making martinis I want a good bottle of vodka. If I'm making a bloody mary I can get by with ok vodka. Some movies I want to see in the theater, some I buy on disc, some I rent on disc, some I catch on cable.

A religious war? That's a rather extreme analogy. I have never attempted to burn a digital fan at the stake. I have heard that they taste like chicken, though.

There are people who buy disc almost exclusively; I am one of those. There are those who buy digital, or simply use streaming, almost exclusively. And then there are those who do varying ratios of both.

I know why I choose disc, so I need no insight into that.

I have heard why people prefer digital; I mostly disagree with them, but I need no further explanation as to why they choose it.

I am more interested in those that buy both. Is their choice purely an economic one? Buy the cheapest? Or is there something more to it, perhaps?

Do they buy the disc only for those movies that they really, really love? Is that because they know the disc has the best quality? Is it because they want to actually own a tangible copy?

It is just a curiosity, wondering how other people make their decisions.

No one is disputing that some people don’t really care for the best quality and prefer convenience. My point is why does one use both then only really (imo) proclaim love for one. Strikes me as odd is all.

See, this is where you guys fall down. You always have to have a little dig at the end. You and several others do it, normally to me but in this case, to someone else.

And the irony is that flyry has unintentionally brought some activity to this thread, after having popped in only long enough to complain and when invited, yet again, to discuss whatever he preferred, he simply popped back out. And then we had two days of silence instead. His posts are kinda like a drive-by shooting.

Yeah, that does seem weird. That would be like saying I like pizza and chinese food and telling critics of chinese food that I think chinese food is every bit as good as pizza and then eating a piece of pizza.

Like I said, takes all kinds

Not the best analogy, really. Chinese food and pizza are vastly different from each other. Comparing dine-in with take out of just one of them would be a more apt comparison. Fresh versus frozen would be an even better analogy.

We are talking about one specific movie and the choice of how best to enjoy it, disc or digital. In this case, a person who promotes one, digital, while still buying both generally, has in this instance chosen the disc. I am curious as to why.

I see that flyry has purchased Die Hard on 4K UHD. Good choice; I did likewise.

I also see that he plans to sell the included blu-ray disc and the digital code in an effort to recoup his purchase price.

I thought he adored codes, loved them even. Why sell the beloved code? Is it a duplicate code? And if he already had the code, why does he want the 4K UHD disc? I thought he felt that the codes were just as good as the discs.

Just curious why such a fan of codes, and digital in general, would get rid of one and instead choose the 4K disc?

And for him to call this a "4K (UHD) catalog dream month" seems surprising, also.

Yeah, that does seem weird. That would be like saying I like carry-out and dining in and telling critics of carry-out that I think carry-out is every bit as good as dining in and then dining in.

Gotta say, seems like the point still stands.

Now if you'll all excuse me I think I'm going to go put in a frozen pizza and stream a hockey game.

(I am actually)

Enjoy your game; I hope your team wins. And enjoy your pizza; I loves pizza!

Time for me to go and watch something, also.

Clearly you haven't glanced at my location in a while.

I do not have a dog in any of these fights this year

Still fun to watch though.

I forgot to look. Go Blackhawks then!

The only pro hockey game I ever saw in person was the Blackhawks vs. the Calgary Flames, at Chicago. Calgary won.

Location does not always tell you which team someone supports, though. Lots of transplanted fans in a city the size of Chicago.

I used to live in the suburbs of Chicago, Lisle and Downers Grove. I also worked as a conductor aboard many Amtrak trains that ran into and out of Chicago before having the good sense to transfer to a warmer climate in southern California.

I miss Gino's East pizza. A lot.

He may already have Die Hard on digital from a previous release and therefore does not need the new code.

But the "new" code should give him the 4K digital version, unlike the code in the earlier releases. Maybe that earlier code was one of those that received a complimentary upgrade to 4K?

I am mildly surprised that he would want to keep the 4K disc after all of his praise for 4K streams and his concerns about disc storage taking up valuable space.

Only he knows what his reasons were. It just piqued my curiosity a little that he chose the disc in this case. Maybe he will join the discussion soon and share his thoughts?

See here we go again, 4K UHD Disc you have an edge but BD and HD Streaming are a draw now with enough Bandwidth. I like Gin Martinis, and a good bottle of Gin is needed for a very good Martini. The Stats on Disc sales show DVD still way ahead with Blu-ray right behind, and UHD a mere sliver on the Pie Chart. So what does this tell us, that Disc people don't care for Quality. Digital HD people just want to see a Movie in what they think looks like BD. So following the 4K Forum Upscale BD is very close to 4K Disc. If you want Quality Dics Play you need the Bitrate of a UHD 4K Disc Player to beat UHD Streaming Providers that Stream HD at higher Bitrates.
