Shogun Assassin”

Let’s see…gushing arterial sprays of blood, heads and limbs getting hacked off...yep, this film entertains.

I’ve read that this short flick was smashed together from two other films: “Sword of Vengeance” (which I swore I tried watching once, and found it boring as hell. And yet, I didn’t recognize any parts of it in this film, so maybe I’m mistaken…) and “Baby Cart at the River Styx” which I’ve never seen. In a way, it kinda shows; this film goes from point A to point B very rapidly, using narration and montages to whiz through exposition and details. It gets a little convoluted at times.

Regardless, the film has a decent and original story; it’s almost like a samurai version of “Shoot ‘Em Up” (for whatever reason, the concept of having an action hero protecting a child seems significant to me; both films also share a certain level of absurdity, though this one is much more earnest in tone). Characters are alright (and by extension, acting is not bad). The film (or films as the case may be) are adequately produced, with somewhat interesting photography and imagery. Production value is a little cheap (perhaps even laughable), but still okay for a film like this.

3.5/5 (entertainment: 4/5, story: 3.5/5, film: 3/5)

As for the Blu-Ray, I’ve seen better and I’ve seen worse. It is sharp and adequately detailed, for sure. Film grain is intact. In fact, it is quite a noisy picture with lots of specks and film artifacts all over the place. There is some image flickering in some scenes. But, color and contrast are good. I’d say it’s not quite as good as a movie like “Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon,” but it’s a grade better than “Fist of Legend.” Sound quality is okay, but I wish the original Japanese language was included as an option (I assume it was filmed in Japanese originally; the English just seems a bit goofy here…).

PQ: 3.5/5, AQ: 3.5/5

Only thing that would've made this movie better would've been a much hotter Mary Jane.

Me and Orson Welles (Netflix)

Director: Richard Linklater
Cast: Zac Efron, Christian McKay & Claire Danes

Film: 4/5

Very nice film. I remember seeing the trailer for this a while ago and its just now been released. Im not sure if it was wide released or not.

Anyway, this film was pretty entertaining. The cast was good, I loved Claire Danes as always but with Zac Efron I liked his performance but it wasnt anything magical but it was better than usual. I will say that I truly believe that Zac can be a really good actor and he prob will be one day just once the HSM series gets behind him. This film is Christian McKay's film debut and I will say he is phenomenal in it! He did a very good job portraying Orson Welles. He is def what holds this film together.

The story was pretty good and the ending suited it well.

I recommend this film for everyone unless you just really dislike Zac Efron. You will love Christian McKay!

The third film is an embarassment, to the extent that I don't even consider it a part of the trilogy, much like Alien 3 and Godfather 3. How do you completely mess up one of the most interesting storylines in X Men lore (Phoenix)?

Default 13 Assassins (TIFF)

I thoroughly recommend 13 Assassins by Takashi Miike. This Japanese samurai action/drama is thrilling and beautiful and steeped in a brutally realistic portrayal of sword-inflicted violence. While I did have a few caveats, I encourage anyone to see this.

Magnolia

Director: Paul Thomas Anderson
Writer: Paul Thomas Anderson
Mains Tom Cruise, John C. Riley, William H. Macy, Julianne Moore

You can never run away from the Past. Face it and be-rid of it!

First off its kinda hard for me to explain how good this movie was, breath taking performance and original story. Magnolia is almost infectious. From the opening to scene to the very end i didnt find myself bored not once throughout this 3 hr movie!

On to the performances which to me stuck out the most. Tom Cruise at first i thought his role was hilarious but not serious at all and before you know it he turns into a dramatic outspoken broken being. William H. Macy was breath taking I couldn't find one flaw in his role simply perfect! Julianne Moore was also stunning especially during the chat with her lawyer WOW.

The story has to be one of the most addicting stories i've ever heard/viewed. The battle for letting go the past or even better facing the past in the present. Overall i thought the movie was a hair away from being a masterpiece. One thing kept me from giving this movie a perfect 5. This was John C. Riley's performance it was completely horrible but at near the end he began to redeem himself.

Great Movie with allot to offer especailly if you like good performances

Highly Recommended

4.5/5

Last Stand is definitely the weakest of the series in my opinion.

I've yet to decide officially which is the better for me X1 or X2, I flip flop a lot. Next time I watch them I'll attempt to come to a firm decision.

I really really liked Wolverine the first time I saw it. I still do like it, just not as much.

Oddly most of the people I've asked about it agree, while Wolverine was undoubtedly very flawed, it still had a few good performances, like Taylor Kitsch as Remy, Liev Schrieber as Sabretooth, Danny Huston as Stryker and Lynn Collins as Silver Fox.

Hm, there are a couple of shorts in the “Animation Show” DVDs that remind me a lot of this film (if you have ‘em, check out “Brother” and “Uncle” ).

Regardless this feature-length film turned out to be quite a bit more amusing. It does have a sad gloomy overtone, but it is also very witty and funny most of the time. The story’s not terribly great, but it has an excellent (if not ridiculously kooky) group of characters. Animation quality is excellent, and is visually distinctive.

Even though this is animated, I wouldn’t recommend it for kids younger than 15. It’s not terribly graphic, but it does have some jokes, references, and ideas that kids either wouldn’t get or shouldn’t be exposed to. Parts of this seemed a little creepy actually.

4/5 (entertainment: 4/5, story: 4/5, film: 4.5/5)
This movie rocks. Nuff said.

Prince Of Persia: Sands Of Time

This movie was a lot better than I expected. We all know video game to movie adaptions are never the best but I can see why this movie did so well. I'm not normally a fan of Jake Gyllenhal but his portrayal as the Prince was pretty good. I haven't played too much of the first game but I've played some and it felt just like the game with all the running up walls and jumping around. It had a great story and a great set of characters. I won't comment on the AQ or PQ since I was only watching on a 22" TV but it still looked decent.

4/5

DIARY OF THE DEAD.

Boring......not a patch on Romero's other Dead films. I rented this as I want to see SURVIVAL. Picture and Audio were nothing too get excited over.
1/5 for me.
