I vividly remember going to see ANH in the cinema back in '97, it was my first Star Wars experience, my dad had seen the original 20 years earlier so it was a nice trip back for him Also, my brother fell asleep (tbf he was only like 4 or so haha) at the Rebel assault on the Death Star.

I think I saw ESB in the same cinema, and don't think I saw ROTJ.

It is pricey - and really stings without the SDR and 3d discs included to boot.. but amazon JP was my only method for the 4k box. there was no way of getting the US set safely and on time in Asia and plus - at least they are on spindles - which is preferable over the sliding-in slots of the US/UK book design.
Generally a JP deal for a lot of their releases

UHD are All region, all the time of course.
These BD are Region Free (or Region All for those that prefer) like everywhere else

Luke's scream 1080p HD (1997 Special Edition) - YouTube

The only SE change Lucas de-specialized himself? This, combined with the climax shattering, shoe-horned shuttle bidness left me gutted and limping from theater. If it ain't broke, don't add screams (nor shuttles).
This is what I dislike the most about ESB also. Im a huge fan of the original "Bring my shuttle" line.

Which I'm pretty sure they also used for Mola Ram when he plummets off the cliff in Temple of Doom (albeit with the scream pitched down a bit)

Not sure why the Emperor would scream since he had a back up plan if he "died"?

Even with a back up plan you're going to scream when someone throws you down a deep chasm.

Remember seeing it vividly! Opening night in Westwood Village for INDEPENDENCE DAY, sold out show, about 1,400 people in the auditorium -- basically the perfect audience for this trailer. The Lucasfilm logo came up and the theater went nuts -- because that logo could only mean one thing. The cheering didn't stop until the trailer ended. It was honestly a pretty great two minutes. And it really got everyone ready to watch ID4, which played great too. Good times.

These slipcovers are starting to dry up at my higher foot-traffic stores. A couple of stores don't have any left, and have plenty of slip-less restocks.

Nothing says resigned leap like a terrified shriek.

I remember a funny comment from Entertainment Weekly at the time, something along the lines of...from the sound of it, Luke was about to join up with Dad, but slipped and fell...

While we're on a wave of '97 nostalgia, I guess I'll share my experience.

I was 9 when these were re-released. I didn't know the difference between Star Wars or Star Trek. They were just old Sci-fi things to me with dated special effects and ugly monsters. But I saw a TV spot for the SEs while watching Saturday morning cartoons, and I was blown away. It looked fun and there was CGI, which was super rad at the time. My parents didn't take me to the theater very often, so I missed out on these and still have never seen the OT on the big screen. But WPIX 11 aired the original version of Star Wars on TV around this time to cash in and I stayed up on a weeknight to watch it. I remember it being a bit long and it didn't have any of the stuff I expected from Star Wars that I'd picked up from cultural references on The Simpsons, etc. I was a little disappointed to be honest. I did convince my parents to buy me that gold VHS trilogy set when it was released in August of that year and that's how I came to watch the trilogy for the first time. Empire has always been my favorite as it was the most adventurous of the three and that Yoda/force stuff was mind blowing for a kid. ROTJ had too many icky creatures and the Emperor kind of scared me. I watched those VHS tapes a lot and I loved those making of featurettes that ran before the movies too. Could be responsible for my love of movies and behind the scenes stuff. I didn't actually see these in widescreen for the first time until I got some VCD rips in the early 2000s.

Recently the '97 nostalgia has hit me pretty hard, probably due to the "end" of the saga. It's made me realize that everyone has their own idea of what these movies are. And people want to rewatch the version that they grew up on, whether it's the original theatrical release, the '97 version or the later versions. Didn't see the original versions of ESB and ROTJ until I found some LD rips around '03/04.

It's too bad the '97 versions aren't widely available. The versions I've found online are either low quality or the fan reconstructions don't have the right colors I remember. The Special Editions - and only the 1997 versions carry that moniker - are a pretty nice way to view the trilogy. There's some stuff that's a bit wonky (CGI Jabba, Greedo shooting, Luke's scream, some of those ROTJ musical numbers). But they don't yet have all the prequel changes (the Emperor, Hayden) so they still feel like they can stand alone without the crushing weight of six other movies.

You know what?
The first time o saw Star Wats was back in 1989/1990 (i really can't remembre, i was 5 or 6). But i remember somthing wierd, i remeber that i was a saturday and in one Air chanel from Argentina they say that it will be one movie eche week, and i remember that i ask my dad "why it says 'Episode IV" if it is the first movie?" .
So:
a) this is my first memory of Star Wars haha
b) i'm pretty sure that was back in 89/90, you guys can help me out to undestand witch version of the movie y saw back then?

And the last thing, back that i just wanted to see a movie, today i think that people don't enjoy movies anymore, they just going to look "what's bad" about the movie.

For me, Star Wars is the original from 77-80-83, I bought the BR from 2011, this new BoxSet and a few more Star Wars thing becasue i like to collect stuff, and i enjoy the new movies (2015-2019, ok TLJ no to much he) and i liked the prequels (a few thing about the Ep I i didn't like, and Ep II really like it, i didn't like what they do with Padme most of the movie but, ok), but i don't care, Star Wars are The Original Movies for me :-)

I prefer the 97 ending of Jedi, the only SE change I did like... (until he added Hayden)

It was interesting, one of the ideas in 97 was that fans would be able to see all three in one day, Jedi got pushed back a week, it was difficult to do, but I did it in Hollywood, I remember there was only one way to do it, had to go to different theaters, I think wrapped it up with Jedi at the Chinese theatre... I kept my ticket stubs to frame, but when I tried to photocopy them, they turned black...

I feel the same way. For all their faults the '97 SEs still have more of that original DNA in them than any subsequent revision. Would love to see them preserved, perhaps someone will do a 4K97 one day?

I can't believe that i can download movies from 1950 for my dad and i can't found a torrent for the 1997 SE of Star Wars :-(

There’s only one single format which has the 97SEs as actually seen in 97. Can you guess which format?

Judging from your signature, I'm gonna guess Betamax.
