And Rebecca Romijn made my heart beat faster. Very seductive lady. ![]() I'm making my way through all of De Palma's films lately, tonight I will see his newest one, Passion. Casualties of War is another very good film of his, that hasn't seen a Blu-ray release yet. |

I did not plan it this way, but it was a good idea to watch the 1943 adaptation of Jane Eyre the night after watching The Uninvited. I love me some gothic 1940s black-and-white cinema, and these are both beautifully-photographed films. It's too bad that the Twilight Time Blu-ray of Jane Eyre was taken from secondary sources instead of the original negative, but they did a fine job with what was available and it's a good-looking disc.
Watching Jane Eyre reminded me that, as much as I like to pile on my least favorite Criterion title, A Safe Place, I am glad that it is in my collection, simply because I like having another Orson Welles movie on the shelf. I own The Third Man on Criterion DVD, and, while it looks good on my setup, I'll probably break down and grab the StudioCanal disc since I get it for cheap next month when Barnes & Noble works their Christmas sales. Tonight is Planes, Trains and Automobiles night. Woo hoo! If I have time, I might put Paris, Texas into the player, because I have a hankering to revisit that movie. I've got a full day tomorrow with the half marathon and driving north to visit family after that, though, so I'll probably just sleep early. I can always watch it when I get home tomorrow night. |

Yes, that one, too. My list wasn't meant as a be-all-end-all list of great Westerns, though. Just wrote down a half-dozen or so that are essential viewing in the genre. I could present a list a mile long of worthy Westerns.
Usually, the problem with presenting a list of the best whatever is that once someone has gone through those, everything else seems lesser in comparison. But there are enough terrific Westerns that even when you've gone through 10 or even 20 of the best, there's still a lot more worth seeing. Of course, I'll watch just about anything when it comes to Westerns. I would kill for a DVD set of the just-shy-of-50 Westerns that Tim Holt made for RKO, not to mention the dozen Tom Keanes and dozen-and-a-half George O'Briens. |
