My point is that all 4K discs will only get cheaper in time. If I am not using it today, I will not be paying more for it because I can almost certainly pay less for it if I buy it tomorrow.

There is also of course, the time value of money as well.

Ironically, I have a moderate 4K collection with no intention to upgrade to 4K. It's not my fault that the new SteelBooks force me to buy a 4K disc.
If you are going to buy the blu-ray anyways, then the only cost that really matters is the difference in price between the 4K and the blu-ray.

For your second point. Here are 2 scenarios. The blu-ray is $25 and the 4K is $30. You can either just buy the 4K now (total cost would be $30) or you can buy the blu-ray now at $25 and wait a year or 2 and get the 4K later for maybe $5-$10 (so total cost would be $30-$35). Best case scenario you break even but most likely you will be paying more (I honestly don't see UHDs dropping to $5 for a while).

Prime shipping is a joke. When I made the order Monday night my guaranteed delivery date was Friday. Now that they finally shipped the order my new guaranteed delivery date is Monday. The free shipping over $35 would have been faster.

Edit: Contacted Amazon and got another free month of Prime due to the inconvenience.

Huh, my order I made on Tuesday got shipped Wednesday afternoon and arrived at my doorstep before 7pm.

There was a second DVD order I made that is shipping from a US warehouse - despite the DVD being "sold by Amazon".

So, I guess it's a bit of a crapshoot depending upon what's in Amazon's Canadian warehouses.

I also ordered stuff on the 16th and it arrived on the 18th. I ordered 3rd party stuff and that shipped, but has not yet arrived.

I also have Prime, but find free $35.00 shipping is just as fast.

I'm keeping Prime for now because it allows me the flexibility to buy single items as they go on sale, rather than wait for $35.00.

So the way I see it, using your scenario, I could buy four BD + UHD combos for the same price as five BDs.

I would rather have five BDs now, than four BD + UHD combos.

I have no plan in the near term to upgrade to UHD. In fact, I feel there is a strong possibility that when I do upgrade (hopefully in 3-4 yrs) UHD may no longer exist and may be completely replaced with streaming or yet another form of physical media.

I don't really see UHDs as a viable mainstream media. I think it has come too soon on the heels of BD and most people have already upgraded from DVD to BD and are not ready to upgrade again.

Furthermore, I think that BD has reached (or may even be beyond) what the average viewer wants or needs.

All that but you forget to mention that you will pay extra and/or twice for a tin can.

Keep fighting that good fight!

Not going to lie - now that I'm subscribed to multiple streaming services, along with The Movie Network and HBO, I find myself buying less physical media. After who knows how many years, this is a first for me. If it's a movie I really truly enjoy, something less popular not available on streaming, or something I have high hopes for I'll still buy it. Where I've stopped buying is the complete blind buys, something easily accessible on streaming, etc. Quality over quantity I guess you could say. If I really feel like I'll never watch it again or it's readily available streaming then I take a pass now.

I guess I'm just waiting to see how everything plays out, so it makes sense for me wait as prices will most definitely come down in the future.

One of the issues I have with UHD is the whole Real 4K vs Fake 4K thing, where studios are trying to pass upscaled 2K films as 4K, which I believe is very misleading.

Yes, I understand UHD carries other benefits such as HDR, wide colour gamut, improved colour depth etc., but I'm a purist and moving forward, I would only go for the real 4K discs.

Outside of Nolan's films and a few others, many of the UHD titles that were on sale during prime day are considered to be fake 4K. Even Blade Runner 2049, which I thought was a real 4K title actually isn't after doing a bit more research.

This really bugs me and it's the reason why I haven't considered upgrading.

I also find it interesting to hear about the number of recent films finished at 2k. So the chances of them ever being true 4K are slim.

So many considerations for 4K media. Not sure what the standard will be as majority of consumers will continue to choose low price - big screen options without consideration of actual “quality”.

Not to mention the adoption for 4K media is going to be hard on the industry.

This has been happening in this industry for every new format.

There are DVDs which are just poor VHS transfers and the same with Blu, etc.

What you really want is true 4K transfer quality, which will always be iffy since many feature films were only ever shot in 2K in the early stages of digital cinema.

The problem I see is that for the majority of viewers, Blu ray (or even DVD) is good enough for most people. A few people can appreciate the difference between DVD and BD, and even fewer can appreciate the difference of 4K.

I don't think 4K will ever go mainstream unless it is forced upon by the general public and the only way that would work is if is affordable/comparable in price next to other options such as streaming, etc.

It was part of Prime Day. The 20 Film FOX Searchlight set was $30.

I own like 8 of the 20 already and still picked one up. It was a no brainer to add the rest to my collection.

It was this set: https://www.amazon.ca/Fox-Searchligh...ox+searchlight

I pre-ordered in April less than 24 hours after they appeared on the site. For what it's worth, amazon said they didn't get them from the distributor yet (due to distributor error)...I was told I'd have it between August 1 and 9.

I had a run where a bunch of Shout Factory stuff arrived late, but they'd been pretty good for a while.

Me too. Hoping it's not one of these common US-only releases again. It's happening more and more often now which is upsetting.
