I prefer physical books over e-books, myself.

I have some e-books, but I usually go for the physical copy.

Well, I suppose it is true that the guy standing on a street corner telling passers by that the world is ending tomorrow and the passers by who shake their heads or roll their eyes are all trying to predict the future and none of them really know what tomorrow will bring. Strictly speaking, the guy who says the world is ending and the people think he's nuts are both going on a limb.

But one of those limbs is quite bit sturdier than the other, methinks.

Good man.

I've recently completed my "After The Battle" series of history books which deal mostly with various phases during the Second World War, but does feature other historical events too. As well as being crammed with facts and information, it includes numerous photographs taken at the time of the event, and also comparison pictures of the same scene as it looks today. They really are beautiful books - not cheap mind you, but very high quality publications. I couldn't imagine having the same enjoyment with an e-book.

Edit: I should add my apologies for turning this into a book thread.

In steeldeel's defense, at least for my interactions with him lately, he's been fine/respectful. I no where agree with his doomsday short form media future ideas, but we've had some back and forth and he didn't mock or was overly argumentative. We've had some issues in the past but I can say with all sincerity he's been fine since I've been back posting. Obviously, this is just my perspective, you can disagree with the views if you want but I don't think he's been as mocking as people have been to him.

Those remind me of books my dad has. He has all these Civil War and WWI/WWII books that are super thick, leather bound with different military seals on them that have all these old photos and information about all the various battles, plans, guns, aftermath stories, etc in them.

No need to apologize at all- not with a wink wink or a nudge nudge.

Today, we have been far afield of the thread topic several times, but where is the harm? There wasn't much in the way of an on topic discussion occurring anyways. I found our side trips interesting.

The last time anyone tried to corral us all back on topic, no one said anything for two days- including the member who complained in the first place. If anyone wants to get back on track, all they have to do is post accordingly.

Those who frequent these parts should feel comfortable in discussing almost anything that comes to mind. There is a degree of familiarity among us that should make that A-OK.

It’s a great watch. History of war is a strong interest for me.

Yes, my dad loved history too. I've still got many of his books about British history in particular, but he'd read anything about European history too. Seems to have rubbed off on me.

I own The World At War on both blu-ray and on DVD. The blu-ray changed the aspect ratio to widescreen and many people were upset by that; it cut off the top of the heads of the people being interviewed. Others felt that it gave the archival footage a greater sense of scale. Many felt the blu-ray brought out substantially more detail making the original aspect ratio of less importance.

The DVD is full frame, which is true to its broadcast form and for some that is what matters most: the OAR always.

It is such a fine documentary that I am happy to support both versions; I am undecided on which one I prefer, though. At 22.5 hours long, it is likely the most comprehensive WW2 documentary ever made- every minute of it fascinating.

Thank you both for mentioning this set, I'm definitely interested now. I've just had a quick look on Amazon, and there's an 11-disc DVD set (I'm assuming this is the one you have) for about £30. I haven't looked at the Blu-ray price yet.

The blu-ray might be OOP; it is commanding a high price on Amazon here in the U.S.

It’s around £50.

I just found it on Amazon UK - a Blu-ray 9-disc set for £53 (described as the Ultimate Restored Edition). It could be the US version is different, I'm honestly not sure.

That would be it. Glad the U.K. price is still reasonable.

Here is the blu-ray.com review of the U.S. edition:

https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/The-W.../14243/#Review

The Amazon.uk listing shows a 56 minute longer running time than what blu-ray.com shows; I am not sure why that is. Sometimes with a series of this length, they do the arithmetic differently, such as including episode recaps in the total run time and other times omitting such recaps. Not sure why there is a discrepancy here.

When you add in all of the extras, this set is well over 30 hours. My blu-ray copy lists the grand total running time at a whopping 36 hours and 16 minutes!

It'll give you a taste of what it has to offer. And it does offer a lot.

You can get it slightly cheaper via third party sellers. Only a couple of pounds though.
