Yep they're giving advanced warning, though people will still no doubt complain that they were completely unaware of a bigger and better trilogy set after buying this year's version.

View full resolution cover art

Last night Warner Bros. announced a limited edition The Dark Knight Rises Blu-ray combo pack which features a broken Bat-cowl. Today, we have a lot more details thanks to a very detailed press release. The Dark Knight Rises will be available on Blu-ray, DVD, digital download, and VOD on December 4th. Warner Bros. will be releasing a special The Dark Knight Rises companion app for iOS and Android which will sync with the Blu-ray disc via BD-Live for even more exclusive bonus content. Fans who purchase the Blu-ray will be happy to know that it features nearly one hour of IMAX footage, and it’ll fill your screen just like The Dark Knight Blu-ray.

Additionally on December 4th, Warner Bros. will be releasing “The Dark Knight Trilogy Limited Edition Giftset” featuring Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, and The Dark Knight Rises all in one collection on Blu-ray and DVD. The trilogy giftset will also include a premium book exclusive to the collection. Warner Bros. also plans to release “The Dark Knight Trilogy Ultimate Collector’s Edition” in 2013.

There is so much more content included in the Blu-ray release, check out the full press release after the break for all the details!

Burbank, CA – “The Dark Knight Rises” arrives this holiday season onto Blu-ray Combo Pack, DVD and Digital Download on December 4 from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group. In the epic conclusion to filmmaker Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy, Gotham City is threatened by the masked terrorist Bane, forcing Batman to return from an eight-year absence and fight for his city one more time.

Also available will be the free “The Dark Knight Rises” app for IOS 5.0 or higher compatible devices including iPhone and iPad, and Samsung Galaxy devices including S2, S3, Note, Nexus and Tab (operating system requirements vary by device). Building upon the already available “TDKR: Gotham City’s Most Wanted” app, “The Dark Knight Rises” app will be updated in two phases. The first update, which will be available in late October, will include several interactive activities such as a photo application that will allow users to put themselves into a Tumbler, a video application that will allow users to insert a Tumbler into their personal videos, and more. The second update, which will be available on December 4, will integrate second screen functionality into the app. It will allow users to sync compatible mobile devices with the Blu-ray disc via BD-Live enabled Blu-ray players connected to the same Local Area Network to access exclusive bonus content. The bonus content will include film location information, Gotham City maps, film trivia, photo galleries and “making of” featurettes. In addition, the second screen app controls playback of the film on your TV via Blu-ray player. “The Dark Knight Rises” app will be available through the iTunes store and Google Play.

“The Dark Knight Rises” will be available on Blu-ray Combo Pack for $35.99 and on single disc DVD for $28.98. The Blu-ray Combo Pack features the film in hi-definition on Blu-ray and in standard definition on DVD. “The Dark Knight Rises” Blu-ray disc takes advantage of the marriage of IMAX® and 35mm formats by using the hybrid master to replicate the unique theatrical experience of integrated film formats. Both the Blu-ray Combo Pack and the single disc DVD include UltraViolet which allows consumers to download and instantly stream the standard definition version of the film to a wide range of devices including computers and compatible tablets, smartphones, game consoles, Internet-connected TVs and Blu-ray players.*

Also available December 4, just in time for holiday gift-giving, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment will release “The Dark Knight Trilogy Limited Edition Giftset,” featuring “Batman Begins,” “The Dark Knight” and “The Dark Knight Rises” all in one collection. Available on Blu-ray or standard definition DVD, “The Dark Knight Trilogy Limited Edition Giftset” will also include a premium book exclusive to the collection, which takes fans deeper into the epic franchise, as well as existing special features. Warner Bros. Home Entertainment also plans to release “The Dark Knight Trilogy Ultimate Collector’s Edition” in 2013.

Leading an all-star international cast, Oscar® winner Christian Bale (“The Fighter”) again plays the dual role of Bruce Wayne/Batman. “The Dark Knight Rises” also stars Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle; Tom Hardy as Bane; Oscar® winner Marion Cotillard (“La Vie en Rose”) as Miranda Tate; and Joseph Gordon-Levitt as John Blake. Returning to the main cast, Oscar® winner Michael Caine (“The Cider House Rules”) plays Alfred; Gary Oldman is Commissioner Gordon; and Oscar® winner Morgan Freeman (“Million Dollar Baby”) reprises the role of Lucius Fox.

The screenplay is written by Jonathan Nolan and Christopher Nolan, story by Christopher Nolan & David S. Goyer. The film is produced by Emma Thomas, Christopher Nolan and Charles Roven, who previously teamed on “Batman Begins” and the record-breaking blockbuster “The Dark Knight.” The executive producers are Benjamin Melniker; Michael E. Uslan; Kevin De La Noy; Thomas Tull; with Jordan Goldberg serving as co-producer. The film is based upon characters created by Bob Kane and published by DC Comics.

SYNOPSIS

It has been eight years since Batman vanished into the night, turning, in that instant, from hero to fugitive. Assuming the blame for the death of D.A. Harvey Dent, the Dark Knight sacrificed everything for what he and Commissioner Gordon both hoped was the greater good. For a time the lie worked, as criminal activity in Gotham City was crushed under the weight of the anti-crime Dent Act.

But everything will change with the arrival of a cunning cat burglar with a mysterious agenda. Far more dangerous, however, is the emergence of Bane, a masked terrorist whose ruthless plans for Gotham drive Bruce out of his self-imposed exile. But even if he dons the cape and cowl again, Batman may be no match for Bane.

All that seems unlikely. It will probably just come in a bigger box with a higher price point, and DVD/DC discs to pad it out. I'll be getting the limited edition cowl and I'll be content.
It'll probably be more featurettes than what's on the BD's now, plus DVDs and swag.

Now, remember, Best Buy is suppose to have an exclusive retrospective documentary on the making of the trilogy when Rises is released. I do wonder if that exclusive shows up in the Ultimate Collector's Edition.

Bat Cowl edition for only $39.99? I have a feeling it may be cheaply made for that pricepoint.

Remember the batpod edition in 2008? I am guessing this will be the same quality of cheapness.
It looks good on picture just like the Batpod did i am assuming. I just wish there weren't any toys. I would have appreciated more if they made a cool LE case or something

I am told that, 70 minutes is nearly an hour.
I'll need to do some independent research to verify this...

70 min is over an hour so there seem to be IMAX scenes missing on the bluray release

But anyone who knows anything about film-making would concede that all of these people have handled extremely complex productions successfully and that takes talent of some kind.

But it concerns me that some people seem to think directing is just about the visual. As Nicolas Roeg - a great cameraman himself - once famously said, "Any c*** can take a pretty picture".

In fact, in some senses, camera placement is the least of a Director's job, as that is the DP's area of concern. Some directors have a very strong idea of camera placement, some don't. It wouldn't be seen as odd, or weak, on set to simply approve or amend the DP's set-ups.

The job of a director is really to martial resources effectively.

In pre-production, a good director must have a coherent concept for the overall look and design of the film. Nolan is very good at this.

He must have the ability to analyse the screenplay and effectively work with the writers to a shooting script. Whedon is good at this.

They must be able to assemble a capable team and cast actors appropriately.

They must then create an environment in which those actors give of their best. If they've cast well, there's not much to be done. They must deal with and address any friction within that cast should it arise.

On set, they must solve logistical problems (within budget and on schedule), and block scenes (though the AD's tend to martial extras and invent background action). Bay is good at this stuff.

In post, they respond to initial edits; to the composer's work; to the FX team. The more knowledge of these they have, the better. Basically, they answer a thousand questions a day. They make decisions in line with their original concept. The more of those decisions they get right, the better the film.

So the requirements for directing are intense but it's more about making choices from the options that your department heads present you with.

Very few directors are brilliant at everything. Some may come from a cinematographic or design background (Ridley Scott, say) but be decidedly mediocre when it comes to analysing a screenplay (see PROMETHEUS). And ultimately, it is more important that a films's screenplay and performances work, than that it "looks" nice. There are many visually strong bad films and some very good films shot in amateur fashion.

Nolan is very good on concept. He casts well and chooses a good team. If a location is well-picked, or a set well-designed, the film will "look" good. I'd say, personally, that he is less good at filming action sequences and that he's weak on screenplay detail. INCEPTION was a vastly over-complicated film, imo, in which he actually didn't find a way to visually convey his story; hence all the very long expositional speeches. I don't actually like Pfister's photography that much but that's a matter of taste.

Whedon is obviously strong on script and creates a very good atmosphere amongst his cast and crew. He is, I think, more concerned with content than look but I'd say that's the right way round. As yet, he doesn't have the gravitas of Nolan or the conceptual weight. But he knows and loves his subject matter.

Bay - well, he's probably better than both of them technically. And I bet he's a damn good businessman, which - in Hollywood - is a vital skill. But his subject matter is immature and he doesn't seem to have much ambition to illuminate the human condition. That's fair enough; but it doesn't really matter how great a director you are, you need to make great films, which he hasn't, imo.

Film is a collaborative medium. One person doesn't make a film; not the ones we're discussing here, anyway. To reduce the task down to squabbles about individual men is to severely underestimate it and illustrates only ignorance.
Great points! How right you are!

I think it's safe to say that they are not going to remove any IMAX scenes from the Blu-ray...the press release did not know the exact amount of IMAX material hence the incorrect listing

This. Can you imagine the shitstorm Warner would evoke with that kind of mischief? Just typical press release inaccuracy (and maybe just questionable semantics, 70 min is nearly an hour)

I hope they use different masters this time: IMAX master for IMAX scenes and 35mm master for 35mm scenes. TDK's 35mm footage looks terrible because they used the IMAX DMR master, which had a bunch of DNR and EE applied to it. Then to make things worse, WB cranked the contrast to ridiculous levels for the Blu-ray transfer as well.

Still pumped for TDKR
Are you serious! Did you ever watch Following or Doodlebug, the guy visually stimulated viewers the same way expertly shot movies would, and he did that Black and White 16mm. Inception, Prestige, Batman Begins have some of the best visuals in the last decade, Memento was a stunner in each frame. Insomnia used Shadows and light to perfection.

The Dark Knight I agree wasn't visually that great, but that was Nolan's intention. He wanted the photographt to be very in your face, and he used Ultra Hi res IMAX and dark grainy 35mm footage to the same effect. Even then there are many shots in the film that are visceral. And TDKR looked awesome even on a 3gp Cam Rip I got.

And Nolan knows what true visuals are, and Joss Whedon! Oh God who am I comparing. Whedon uses big budgets, special effects and a DI to get slick visuals. Nolan films on film, edits on film grades on film and releases the best prints in film. And it's not easy to get such raw beautiful visuals on film nowaday, Lean, Kurosawa, Tarkovsky, Ray, Bresson are dead. Except Malick, Nolan, P.T Anderson, Ridley Scott and to a certain extent Fincher, Jackson, Spieberg and Scorcese I don't see any director with a visual perspective these days. And except Nolan, Anderson, Spielberg and Malick the others use digital. And I don't mind Digital, but it just takes the magic away from many movies, but for certain movies it works, like Benjamin Button, Slumdog Millionaire and others. And Scorcese and Fincher did miracles on digital too. But the main thing is that nowadays directors and viewers are constantly losing the raw visual sense which used to once define great cinema.

But lets leave that there. The main thing I don't get is how people even compare some people. I mean Whedon to Nolan! Nolan made 7 de facto masterpieces so far. And Whedon made 2 Smart flicks, Avengers and Serenity.

Agree, I still am awed by the way he used light shadows and colors in his early films, even Transformers. Only if the guy got to work with some good writers, I think he might have done something. I mean the guy was even in The Criterion Collection once, when true greats like Nolan and Fincher were not,

Full features list and trilogy announced:

Sorta sucks that the DVD cover art looks better than that of the blu-ray. Trilogy art is pretty cool, though I probably won't get it, as of now.

Also, we're supposed to be getting "3 hours" of bonus features. Hope they're good!
