The problem is even in their heyday the Friday the 13th movies were hated by critics. I would have loved sequels to both the Friday and Elm Street remake from Platinum Dunes as I feel they did a lot right, from tone to casting to sticking to an R rating. If they can't go completely emulate the elements of the original maybe approaching the material from a more suspense driven and serious angle is what they have left. I don't want these films to be over. We aren't remaking The Shining or The Exorcist here, we are carrying on a slasher franchise from a filmmaker who wanted only to make the scariest movie he could, not the most meaningful piece of artwork or social commentary. If he was fine with it being a franchise and perpetual one at that, why shouldn't I be too? I love the movies myself and would love to see more of them. |

They way I understand it, if Paramount didn't make a new film by a certain time frame, the rights would revert back to the original creators. And if that's the case, they can go to whomever (Blumhouse, presumably) that'll be more than happy to do a new one. If you enjoyed that one, it's cool but the flaws you're referring to, I'll add inconsistencies, plot holes big enough to fly a 747 through and overall lack of logic. On the other hand, a slasher franchise with 12 entries, all made in the US does have an audience, it was foolish of them to use the success of Rings to gauge how F13 would do (and from the sound of things at least one of their scripts would've made a fantastic thirteenth film). It seems Platinum Dunes will go the way of Dark Castle Productions for now and favor new over remakes as was their original intent. |

Honestly, either A24 or Neon producing a Friday the 13th film would be a bold, exciting move as you know they would do something special with the franchise...and wouldn't suck.
A Blumhouse or Millennium produced Friday the 13th has much greater odds to blow ass, if you ask me. |

Millennium is more of this generation's Cannon Films and Blumhouse is more in the Corman category. |

A more Mario Bava style Friday the 13th that also retains Jason as the killer would be top-notch.
Could make for a cool reintroduction for the Big J. Just hope Victor Miller realizes his lawsuit would do more harm than good and backs the hell off so we can get more films. Him winning is a "Disney owning 20th Century Fox" size disaster. |

The judge granted summary judgment in favor of Victor Miller, citing that the script wasn’t a work for hire or prepared within scope of employment, and that Miller was an independent contractor and not an employee.
As it stands, barring settlement or appeal, Miller could have domestic rights and producers could have international rights where termination recapture isn't applied. As much as screenwriters tend to get crapped on by everyone in a position of power, and creators of original property get screwed over by their company, I personally feel like this is a bit of BS since Jason and Friday the 13th as we know it now has nothing to do with Miller. However, the judge also mentioned that there could be future copyright claims on adult Jason vs. child Jason. Hollywood Reporter article here |

Based on what I've read this just means Miller will get a better deal than he would have, but for anyone to make money there will have to be a deal or they both lose. Miller will have the US rights but none of the material people want to see ie. Adult Jason. Cunningham will have the International Rights without Jason's origin. Essentially Miller could only make a movie based on Pamela and Child Jason for the US market, and lets face it, no production company would be particularly interested in. Meanwhile Cunningham could only make an Adult Jason movie for foreign markets.
They'll be forced to agree on a deal OR they sell their individual rights to the same person/company and then THEY could add them back together to make a new film. It's just a pain in the ass because it delays everything ![]() The even worse part is that other writer's will see this case and try to get more money for stuff they did decades ago and this will happen with other, even bigger 'IP' in future ![]() |
