some will love it, sure many do, but i'd be willing to bet vast majority of those can't recount the story, and anyone listening would regret asking them to do so. i still like fukasaku, but some i've seen are dull and others fall apart if you rewatch them. still feel tricked by the kinetic photography, but always wanted to see how much more effective it is on the big screen. still want 'under the flag of the rising sun' to reappear, and the more obscure, preferably early films too. i'm happy for labels to keep going for samurai and yakuza films, but i don't find the restricted size of the audience for physical releases as a healthy basis for supporting obscurities as the larger market that can take more risks gets to the weirder stuff without finding an audience that overstates their understanding and appreciation for it as though they're inherently getting the stuff more than those that have long tired of the trials and tribulation of the market today, and have gone elsewhere for an easier time of it all. |

We all like what we like, I suppose. I personally find the yakuza films a bit of a chore at this point and roll my eyes when another is announced but there are plenty in the genre that I like. Love the Battles Without Honor and Humanity series, loved Big Time Gambling Boss, I'm just at the point where any new one that comes in the subscription will be the last left on the to watch pile. I'm much more appreciative when they release something like Oguri's The Sting of Death (even if it's probably my least favourite Oguri film!) or Yoshida's A Story Written with Water but I've resigned myself to being in a minority.
---- That was an interesting set of announcements today. The Saura was particularly welcome and, as Aunt Peg said above, it would be great if Radiance did release more Saura as the likes of La caza, Honeycomb, and Anna and the Wolves would sit very nice in the catalogue. The selections for this World Noir volume don't excite me as much as the previous volume, but I have heard good things about Paris Pick-Up. FWIW, Fran said today that HIS is definitely delayed until 2026 and WN4 swapped places with WNN on the schedule as one of the titles in the latter is still undergoing restoration (so i'm guessing 2026 for that one too) |

People talking about Yakuza film fatigue, Hokuriku Proxy War, one of the most recent Radiance ones, is definitely one of the best they’ve released so far. Really good stuff, and certainly shows that quality examples from the genre are still coming.

Quite interesting that they found LE of WttDH more or less at the same time Palindromes will arrive, he. I would do the same if it was my company in case some extra LE appears and it was planned to release another title of the director, just save them for the same time. Nothing wrong with that, it seems a great play for me...
![]() But what's a bit weird is that they are not limiting the purchase to 1, even myself was very very very tempted to buy 3-4 for reselling, but I foolish resisted... ![]() New titles are great ones, specially Saura's and the samurai flick. But I did not pre-order nothing, Radiance is by far my favorite label at the moment, but with the "excesive" amount of interesting releases from all labels I follow (Radiance, Eureka, Arrow, 88Films, Indicator, BFI, TWF, SS, Criterion), it's imposible for my wallet and space to be up to date, I think to buy most of them in sales with Rarewaves/Amazon and each end of month prioritizing the most beloved/soon OOP, hehehe. Great time to be a new BD collector, but if you have years and years doing so, the upgrades and re-releases could be a nigthmare I guess... ![]() Cheers, Last edited by vieyra; 06-11-2025 at 03:23 PM. |

The Yakuza films I would like to see get a release are the Nihon No Don films from 1977-1978. Much different compared to most yakuza films as they are a bit more methodical in their pace and building up to a pretty epic conclusion after three films. They star pretty much everyone in the crime genre at that point, from Sonny Chiba to Toshiro Mifune. Never had a proper release outside of Japan. Hopefully one day!

However, I also agreed with ZombAid that sometimes yakuza movies could be a too steep a slope depending of the day or the specific flick, and even if there are tons not released in the west, last years we've getting a lot of them, maybe nothing new for the super fans, for most of people could be too much. But well, I think it's something normal with most of genres, even if you're a fanatic, seeing 20-25 in a row and you can be saturated. Imagine if the genre is not precisily your cup of tea, you're having a bad day and the movie is not very good. I really like Fukasaku, but I remember that a few years ago I saw one of their yakuza films, not remember which one exactly, but I think it was one from Battles... and just ended with the same feeling as ZombAid, who were who and why they did shoot each other all along.. the subtitles did not help at all either, hehehe. But specially the camera movement and fast pace editing was a nightmare for me in that ocassion, he. Cheers, |

Disappointed to see Koundouros' Ogre.pushed back as I was anticipating its announcement today, but relieved to see no other ogre took its place in today's slate (phew!) and the Saura almost makes up for it!
Too bad about the Kino duplications in the noir set. |
