Official artwork doesn't appear until items are officially announced. With actual release dates. And even then some of the final artwork isn't quite so final at that point.

I don't see what your point is. "High quality" and "cardboard" are not mutually exclusive terms - not everyone hates cardboard on principle like you apparently do. In fact, for the DVD releases, many consider the cardboard digipaks to be superior! Look at Criterion-specific forums and you will see people wishing popular new Criterion releases come in digipaks as opposed to the standard plastic DVD case Criterion uses. And when unpopular titles like Monsoon Wedding come in digipaks, people say "it's a waste of a nice digipak."

The initial Criterion BD digipaks were considered substandard because there was not strong support - they would frequently come slanted and crushed, and the slipcovers ranged between too tight and too loose. These are not problems shared by the DVD digipaks which use the more structurally sound 3/4ths slipbox. This slipbox style is certainly what the new Brakhage digipak looks to be using, so presumably it will be just as sturdy.

Okay, I've tried to hold my tongue on this, but this recent rash of intense speculation on forthcoming releases,--especially pre-orders and coverart for unreleased, unannounced titles is really bothering me. It just seems kind of high-and-mighty to presume things in such a certain way until we get the official announcement or listing from Criterion. Not an Amazon placeholder or pre-order, not a news article, however reputable, but an official announcement of titles for August for Criterion (and I saw that Facebook post about letting "the cat out of the bag" on their official Facebook page).

Maybe it's just me, but my excitement for the next announcement, which in all seriousness, is a highlight of my month in terms of shopping, has been all but ruined by pervasive postings regarding the "August titles" or the "Fall titles". Usually I'm all for speculation, but, especially seeing as this leak is for over a month's worth of releases, this time it just feels like people in the online community are trying to "one-up" Criterion, and frankly, if I were them, I would deliberately change as much as I could about next month's release schedule.

Yes, the leaked titles are all but coming, but we certainly don't know for sure that they are coming next month, especially now that this leak has happened. In the end, it's Criterion's decision when and how to release the titles they have ready, and beyond that a title is as good as NOT a Criterion.

Criterion was one of the few companies previously not susceptible to retailer-linked early announcements - this kind of thing is par for the course for all the major studios, and many of the smaller ones. I guess you can have a personal opinion on what feels more "special," but if the information is out there then it's out there - it's not made up or imagined, someone somewhere let the cat out of the beg (whether purposeful or not), and it carries a certain weight. It's not "high and mighty," no one is dictating what Criterion releases besides the company itself - all this information originates from somewhere within Criterion.

As for Criterion changing things as much as possible to counteract early information getting out - why? Their goal is to make quality releases, and then sell these releases to as many people as possible. If there's enough excitement about titles that early retailer information is generating news posts and forum threads, that means people are excited! They should purposefully piss off these excited buyers just so they can feel some vague sense of control over the situation? Seems entirely counterproductive. I mean, if release information really changes due to things beyond their control - well stuff happens, and no one can hold it against them, especially considering they never officially announced it. But I just don't see any benefit whatsoever, for anyone, to changing plans just for the heck of it.

Rampant speculation and internet forums sort of go hand in hand. I can understand you feeling a little like somebody ruined the anticipation. I'm willing to bet getting those titles in your hand is going to make up for it.

Criterion did release a New Years card hinting at a dozen or so releases.

My feelings on this recent leak is we may not even see 2 of the films mentioned in the August line-up. For all we know those are planned for later in the year. There are always suprises---- ie. We all saw Red Shoes coming a mile away for July but did any of think another P&P would be released the same month with it?

That's what I got out of "Coming this Fall".

Also I am going to speak the truth here. I bet come announcement day this month, there are going to be alot of people on here posting, "Where is Seven Samurai, Darjeeling Limited, Antichrist, etc?" It has happened every month since Thin Red Line and Seven Samurai has been announced, so I can't wait for that.

Exactly. Like you I eagerly await Criterion's announcements each month. I'm not sure how I feel right now about these "leaks." Right now I would prefer to hear about an upcoming release from the company itself.

I buy every Blu-ray that Criterion puts out because I know I'm getting a high quality product. Even if the disc is of a film I've never seen I feel confident that if the company feels compelled enough to release it I will find merit in the release.

I think they're doing a great job balancing commerce with art. Even though I think some arguments can be made regarding recent inclusions vis a vie IFC, I believe each of them to be worthwhile.

So Criterion should change their release schedule just to prove random people posting on the internet forums wrong? Do you know how ridiculous that sounds?

Greetings folks, I'm wondering if anyone can help a overseas Criterion collector out with replacement cases? I would like to get some of the replacement cases but can't get a response from Criterion regarding overseas shipping. Therefore I'm wondering if anyone in this forum would be so kind to help me out with receiving the replacement cases and then shipping them to Sweden for me? Of course you time and effort will be fully compensated trough a paypal transfer...

Any takers?

I've got Brazil 3-disc DVD coming in the mail. Got it for $19 +shipping

Which cut should I watch first? The long main cut or the happy studio version that Gilliam refused to release?

Is the shorter cut even worth a view?

thanks.

Definitely the director's cut. The happy studio cut is an interesting thing to watch after you're familiar with the movie, but your first experience with the film should definitely be the 'good' cut.

Do you own any of criterion's dvds? Cause they came in several different varieties and It's obvious this trend will continue on Blu-ray. Be glad they gave you the opportunity to buy replacement cases for the first wave of titles. Just because criterion is using a different packing method doesn't mean its has anything to do with cost or their "image."

I keep dvds on spindles and never had any problem with them playing years later. Not to mention Blu-rays have the extra scratch resistant coating on them... you can store the discs by tossing them under your bed and they will be fine as long as they're not cracked in half

The only one of those that will get an August release IMO is Thin Red Line----and I can wait on that one as it recently toured the art house circuit.

I'd much rather see a blu for something like M.Hulot's Holiday, Bicycle Thieves, Hiroshima Mon Amour or surprise us with a Rivette

Also, I believe Red Riding Trilogy is IFC controlled. I'd imagine CC wants to release that one...

I think Thin Red Line is the only one in that group too, that is why I said I can't wait because I know there will be alot of people asking why the other ones wasn't announced yet. Those people that doesn't know how Criterion works and that those leaked announcements doesn't mean those are the next announcements. It happens every announcement day. Ever since the Thin Red Line and Seven Samurai was announced to come out this year, it has happened.

Was Hiroshima Mon Amour ever said to be in line for a blu release, or is that just something you would like to see?
