Unhappy

Watched Salo yesterday and Eyes Without a Face today.

I'll never be able to unsee some of the things I watched in Salo. It was insanely disturbing and honestly scared me. The President is one of the creepiest characters in any movie I've ever seen.

Eyes Without a Face was fantastic. I couldn't take my eyes away from the screen during the procedure scene. It reminded me A LOT of The Skin I live In which I also really enjoyed.

Gate of Hell is a great "barebones" Criterion release. It was a rare blind buy for me.

That order I placed at the beginning of November finally showed up. Woohoo!

So I got to see Seconds for the first time. Pretty awesome stuff; it's a neat premise, and the camera work is off the chain. I'd give it a 4.5/5, and I am glad to have blind-bought it. Will have to see Seven Days in May next, so I can say that I've seen all of the Paranoia Trilogy.

Next, I'll be checking out A Man Escaped, Pale Flower, The Organizer, and The Uninvited. I also got the Zatoichi collection and City Lights on their way.

Seven Days in May is one of the top titles from what's left of my original wishlists.

I would love to see that get a nice release somewhere.

I need to see the other two films in Frankenheimer's "paranoia trilogy." I've gone through Seconds a few times, and it gets better with each viewing.

I just finished watching Murnau's City Girl. This is a beautiful film on Blu-ray, and this one strikes me as a likely influence on John Ford's work. It's not quite on the level of Sunrise, but it's a strong film on its own terms. Unlike Sunrise, this film is distinctly American in terms of visuals and tone.

It is available, at least for those people that can play region B discs

Criterion should release Vampire's Kiss (1988).

Yeah, Cache is fantastic. I still haven't bought in on Bluray but I'm definitely going to. Piano Teacher is also great but it's not a film I could watch very often (Huppert's performance is unbelievable in that one).

By the way, I just watched L'Avventura on DVD, and I must say I didn't like it as much as I did L'Eclisse. I find the latter to be a better film overall. Still waiting for both to be released by Criterion on Blu-ray.

I agree. It's my favorite Sirk and I'm patiently waiting for an upgrade of this and all the Sirks.

According to this post https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.p...8&postcount=10 some of the movies don't have English subtitles at all.

I could not agree more. It is a frightening, nightmarish film, and the President is certainly the creepiest character in the film.

This is one of the most intelligent posts I've seen on this forum. Bravo, sir!

But seriously, there is no way they'll release this even though they've released something similar in Hausu.

Vampire's Kiss, if ever released, will probably be a Shout Factory or Twilight Time title. Maybe Arrow in the UK. Eitherway, I hope someone announces it soon.

Continuing to make my way through the stack of movies I've picked up over the last 4 months or so, and yesterday was The Red Shoes.

First off, what a beautiful movie! The colors in the release were so vibrant and warm, I was amazed at how good it looked. The ballet, shoes, and just the whole darn thing was a joy to watch. As the for the story, my wife enjoyed it a little more than I. I knew the basis of the story, and had seen it played out in various other movies and TV shows (an episode of Angel comes to mind), but it was nice to see such and early telling of this classic story. And of course the characters were amazing, as well as the actors who played them. Overall a great movie... one I thought I wouldn't want to watch again, but was happily proved wrong.

On another note, was at BN last night and talked to the lady in the media section. She said the B1G1 Free sale runs the 10th through the 16th. I love this, and hate it all at the same time. I've spent so much these last few months, but there is so much more to buy still.

Hmm.. I had never drawn this comparison before, but I think it can be made. Both movies feature very deliberate pacing and characters who deal entirely in secret worlds - so much so that the preservation of secrets themselves become driving forces stronger then any other particular goal. I agree that both movies evoke similar feelings when I watch them.

While Le Cercle Rouge is my favorite Melville film, Army of Shadows and Le Samourai are right behind.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy has become one of my favorite movies of the past decade. Strangely, I did not think very much of it the first time I saw it, but gave it another chance about a year later. I've since seen it about six more times.

In the supplemental features for Seconds, Alec Baldwin describes two types of movies - those you have to be in the mood to watch and those that put you in the mood. For me, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is in the latter category.

Watched The Searchers yesterday and was just blown away. I love this movie... Ford really is one of the greatest directors of all time.

On a related note, during the Thanksgiving and Cyber Monday sales I picked up a handful of Westerns, Man with No Name Trilogy and The Outlaw Joesy Wales. I still need to buy Unforgiven.

Looking forward to sitting down with these.

Those are all excellent Blu-rays.

There's a lot of talk about a proper remaster of The Good, the Bad and the Ugly coming out next year, and I'm keeping up with the news with great interest, but I still enjoy my current Blu-ray just fine. It's a good enough movie for me that I'll double-dip for a superior transfer, but it's not like I'm going to be thinking, "I can finally enjoy this movie now."

The Searchers was one of the first Blu-rays that I added to my collection. I found it for five dollars on a used rack, of all places. The Blu-ray is phenomenal, and it does justice to a truly monumental Ford movie.

If you enjoy Gian Maria Volonté's work in A Fistful of Dollars and For a Few Dollars More, then you might want to give a look to the new Criterion Blu-ray, Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion.

I really enjoyed The Searchers, and think that John Wayne is a phenomenal actor. I really enjoyed the bonus feature conversation with Martin Scorsese, Curtis Hanson, and John Milius. It was great to see how much this film meant to them, and got some nice insight in to Scorsese's youth going to see movies.

Thanks for the heads up on the new transfer of The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, I bought these individually cheaper than they were as the set... so I'll keep eyes and ears out for a new release.

And I was thinking of picking up Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion tomorrow when the BN B1G1 sale starts. Just trying to narrow down the other film to get.
