Finally, a top notch looking Halloween that doesn’t look under saturated.

Worth noting that I think they have incorrectly labelled this as 100nits, as this scene appears to be what I get at 150 (also their sky is brighter and grainer than mine looks, which can be achieved through highlight recovery, measuring each frame's peak luminance, and possibly a custom curve, though all the rest of the shot is the same as 150nits). Just a little disclaimer why our screenshots differ. I had highlight recovery disabled and measure each frame's peak luminance disabled.

Here's an example of what I mean with the compression though:
[Show spoiler]

What a difference a few frames makes!
(Again, not a dealbreaker for me. Just worth pointing out. It's much harder to spot in motion)

Always take screenshots with a pinch of salt, kids.

Where are the compression issues?

Lionsgate looks so disgustingly ugly compared to this new Shout! UHD, that it’s comical comparing the two.

It really looks like it was filmed in California on the Shout disc...

I'm not a fan of oversaturation when it comes to Halloween, and where's the filmic look?

When you go to other states, do all of the colours suddenly desaturate and you go colour blind?

Over saturation? Shout! UHD is just barely saturated enough to be proper. It’s that other disc that’s practically black and white.

That other disc looks natural imo; this version is basically scrubbed clean.

All that scanner noise, sharpening, plus who knows what film source they even used looks natural?

The transfer on the BD is great. As was mentioned by another member it doesn't seem to have whatever compression issues are on the UHD either. I certainly didn't notice any and I'm sensitive to that. The only disappointment for me is the mono issue.

I'm glad to own both transfers as far as this new one and the 2013 are concerned. My preferred cut is the extended cut so that's the one I watch on Halloween night but now I have this new BD of the theatrical cut that I'll watch earlier in the month from now on as well. If you're concerned about the quality of the extended cut though I strongly recommend you go with the far superior Italian release as far as that cut is concerned.

I don't have the disc yet myself (*shakes fist at Shout!*), but this post raised some concerns for me that I have yet to personally verify:

LCD won't do any favors. I was a little surprised at how grainy it is for when it was made, but still thought it looked very good.

Had a couple masked-and-vaccinated friends over to the home theater this evening for the first time since February 2020, so we could resume our usually-annual Halloween screening together... and this new disc was phenomenal. I do miss just a tiny bit of the chunkier grain from the IP on the older 35th Anniversary Blu-ray (from Boxed Set with proper mono), but there's still plenty of fine grain swirling around to make me happy.

This was my third time through the new 4K disc, and my second time watching it as an actual movie instead of skipping around and pixel peeping. I believe fairly passionately that if you're a fan of this movie, you're missing out if you dig your heels in on the compression issues or the filtered mono. To my eyes, the disc looks beautiful in motion (yes, I pulled out that old chestnut), and the mono is as glorious as its been for the past twenty years: not ideal, but definitely "feeling" a whole lot more like the Halloween I grew up on than any revisionist surround mixes.

And man, what a crowd-pleaser. My friends were aware I'd gotten the new 4K disc, but they're not into this stuff as much as I am, and I didn't make a big deal out of it. But wow, they kept commenting throughout about the gorgeous colors and detail, seeing things they'd never seen before. After they left, I popped in the old 35th Anniversary disc on a whim, and it just seemed so drab and lifeless.

This release is a home run for me. I realize there are valid complaints, and I'm not faulting anyone for feeling disappointment if these are issues that really "pop" for you. But I guess the particular problems of this disc aren't the things that tend to rankle me personally, like edge enhancement or DNR. All I want is original audio (check!) and an image that looks nice 'n' textured like a film print, when projected onto my 92-inch screen (check!)

We were lucky enough to have a rare thunderstorm here in L.A. tonight that set the mood perfectly, and against that backdrop the new 4K disc was an unqualified hit.

Best Buys in Pennsylvania are loaded with part 1. Part 2 is only available in limited locations in other states. And looks like Best Buy isn't carrying 3, 4 and 5 in store at all.

That grain from the IP is sharpened and poorly resolved scanner noise. No IP or film print looks like that.

Hopefully you gave them all a nose swab as well before you allowed entry. Can't be too careful.

What the heck is going on with Amazon? I just checked my order and most of them have different delivery dates, and it says none will arrive until at least the 22nd. I don't get it. Two of them don't even have estimated delivery dates yet. I pre-ordered these a month+ ago. I thought Amazon was supposed to get these to us on Day 1?

It's pretty clear Shout is the one having the supply problems. They're just not a big company. They're a little boutique label and they don't have the muscle to push the suppliers, or the cash flow to make sure everything's ready well in advance. I just sadly had to order part II from Amazon because it's been wiped out everywhere else. Seems like they treated the sequels all as the second stringers here, but the demand for part II was greater than for the others. I'd just order everything else from Best Buy if I were you and cancel Amazon.

Demand for part 2 was greater... Plz do tell, Blumhouse, how it was a good idea to retcon that sequel?

Yep, we don’t get storms like that often. When I was driving to and from my parents’ house there were frequent huge bolts of lightning that shot across the sky. Hopefully the thunder sounds didn’t make you think you were listening to the 7.1 remix.

I did worry about that a little bit and your right, someone might get the wrong impression. Any original camera negative is going to have it's own grain structure...very slow film fine grain; very fast film coarse grain. Any analog copy of an original negative will do it's best to copy that image along with any and all other elements (typically grain) and everything else optically associated with the original source even blunders like hair, fingerprints, scratches etc. That's why it's best to start from the best source (if possible of course.)

I've never understood what you mean by "high frequency detail." Is that smaller elements within the image on a frame of film?
