I'm honestly going to wait until this comes to streaming, just due to the runtime. That's not a slight to the movie. I'm happy it's that long. The more Scorcese the better. It's just a comfort thing for me. Anything over 2.5 hours I start physically getting uncomfortable in a theater. That's why I prefer watching at home so I can take a break if need be.
The Irishman was amazing, and I'm glad I got to watch it at home. Did it over 2 nights which made it more enjoyable. So my question is....do you guys have a threshold for runtimes in the theater? Maybe that's why I didn't have the Oppenheimer experience. Good topic to discuss though. |

I have no problem with the length of a film. I can sit for hours in a theater.

I only got up once during screenings of Sátántangó and Once Upon A Time in America so I really have no problem with runtimes if the film is great.
Plus, my local cinema has these seats so comfort won't be an issue ![]() ![]() I saw The Irishman in the same branch of cinemas. |

3hr plus movies can be well paced (The Irishman was), but unfortunately this one wasn't. There was still much to admire, but it needed a brutal edit. The movie is so long that the fairly simple story got lost floundering around with different characters and needless scenes. Compare that to the book, which is incredibly spare, not a sentence wasted.
An average Scorsese movie is still a very good movie, but I came away disappointed. This would have been great if it was an hour shorter. Also the ending is bizarre to the point I don't even feel qualified to pass judgment on it just yet. Felt like I'd just jumped into a Wes Anderson short. |

I just got back from my local theater and I have to say that I didn't like it. I am a huge Scorsese fan and the film is really well shot but it meanders so much it hurts the film. I have no problem with long films. I saw Avatar 2, John Wick, Oppenheimer, and Dead Reckoning in the theater but this film is far too long. The pacing kills the momentum and it never really gets it back. I also thought that Dicaprio and De Niro were average. They both give performances that are common for them. They're good but they never rise above that. I did, however, LOVE Lily Gladstone. She is a powerhouse here without ever raising her voice. She never yells at anyone which was refreshing. She is not trying for any awards like so many actors do. She feels so natural in the role that we forget we are watching an actor. There are scenes where she gives out these guttural screams that are soul shattering. She is the best thing about this film, bar none. She deserves every ounce of praise she has gotten so far and she deserves to win every award out there next year. Her performance is the best performance of 2023. No one, male or female, comes close to her in this film.

Worst than THE IRISHMAN and much better than GANGS OF NEW YORK historic period wise!. DiCaprio overacted and overreacted in too many important scenes. DeNiro is in peak form here. Gladstone is just brilliant and steals the whole film. Very difficult subject. Marty might have given DiCaprio too much freedom. Stellar cinematography. Movie is stretched too much. Its very dark, dull and doomed. feels very long. DiCaprio just dont have the acting prowess of Phoenix and Depp to pull you in when on screen for lengthy scenes. Background score really falls short. Its a "very good" film but falls well short of a "great" cinema experience. |

Kermode liked it. Thinks DiCaprio was great but Lily Gladstone steals the show. And he thinks the visuals demand to be seen on the big screen but that the sprawling nature of the storytelling lends itself more to home viewing and doesn’t think it should've been this long as a theatrical release.

Well, to differ with everyone else here, I absolutely loved this film.
As for the length, I never moved once. I went to the restroom right before I sat down and right after I came out, but otherwise never moved from my seat. I was completely enthralled the entire time. I didn't find it meandering at all. Excellent on all levels to me. I can't wait to watch it again. |

By the way, no one has mentioned Tatanka Means (The late Russell Means' son) from this film.
He has a cool as hell part in the last third of this film. |

Cool is oddly the perfect word for him in the movie, because he had a badass energy without doing anything overtly badass.

It is mostly engrossing throughout but kinda all over the place too. Seems like they did not really settle around a throughline they wanted to construct the movie around and tried to jam in most of what they shot. It looks good and the sets and costumes are good. Performances? Gladstone is good. DeNiro even is good. I thought Plemmons was best in show. And then there's DiCaprio and Fraser. DiCaprio is kinda awful. The accent is phony and the way he had his jaw jutting out the whole time and his lips curled down into this smiley face -> ![]() I feel slightly unsatisfied. The story is definitely very important. Unsure that this was the right way to tell it. |

This one didn’t work for me, and on the train ride home I realized that what really bothered me (outside the languished pacing) was I think Leo was very miscast, and he and Jesse Plemons should have swapped roles.
But I agree with everyone else, Lily Gladstone was terrific. A movie from her POV would have been great. |
