Mario Cristobal still will be coaching in Miami in 2013 after all.

The former Miami offensive lineman, who transformed FIU from the biggest mess in FBS football into a team that went to back-to-back bowl games within five seasons of his arrival, only to be fired last month due to friction with athletic director Pete Garcia, is returning home to Miami. Cristobal will be the Miami Hurricanes' new associate head coach and also will coach tight ends, two sources told CBSSports.com Thursday morning.

The move is a key addition for UM coach Al Golden since Cristobal is as plugged into the dynamics of the South Florida recruiting scene as any coach in the country. He's also been lauded for his energy and toughness.

NFL offensive tackle Eric Winston, who played for Cristobal at Miami, praised the hire as soon as word got out. Asked what makes Cristobal such a great coach beyond just being a top recruiter, Winston told CBSSports.com, "Intensity. Mario is intense about every day, every practice, every rep."

Last month, UM lost wide receivers coach George McDonald, considered by Canes insiders as one of Golden's top assistants. McDonald was hired at Arkansas.

Cristobal is bypassing opportunities to be an offensive coordinator at an major conference program as well as assistant offers from NFL teams to return to Miami, according to multiple sources.
Florida International never should have fired him, but their loss if our gain. He's a pretty darn good coach.

Brian Kelly's interview with the Eagles has cost Notre Dame a 4-star recruit:

Quote:
Linebacker recruit Alex Anzalone was once committed to Ohio State, but he backed out of his verbal commitment to the Buckeyes after a convicted sex offender posted a picture on the Internet of himself with Anzalone during the prospect's official visit to Columbus in April.

It's hard to top that recruiting story, but Anzalone's recruitment took another strange turn on Thursday, when he decided to sign with Florida after a months-long commitment to Notre Dame. Anzalone, an early recruit who was set to enroll at Notre Dame in January, was only a day away from signing his official Letter of Intent.

Per Mike Farrell, the national recruiting analyst for Rivals.com,Anzalone flipped to Florida because of Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly's interview with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Oddly enough Texas A&M has two 4-star QB recruits committed for 2013. Do they really not realize Manziel has 3 years left there?

They'll probably redshirt at least one of them if not both. I'm not sure what their QB depth is like behind Manziel. I also can't imagine Manziel turning pro before he exhausts all of his collegiate eligibility, so they will have to be riding the pine for a few years.

And sure enough Brian Kelly's "interview" with the Eagles was a ploy for more money from Notre Dame.

I'm worried for the safety of any non-athletic student working for the team

Looks like the Hokies will be hiring Scot Loeffler as OC and Jeff Grimes as O-line coach from Auburn, who just came off their worst offsensive season. Ugh. I hope the ship was already taking on water before they were there, otherwise next season is going to be painful. Hokies will also pick up Aaron Moorehead as Receivers coach from Stanford.

Logan makes his decision today at 4pm if he is coming back or not.

In your opinion, what are the chances that Bud Foster goes somewhere else, either as a DC for a better program or as a HC somewhere?

I think most understand that he is a headcoach-in-waiting, especially since he has had numerous offers for head coaching gigs and has dismissed them all (he does get paid well at VT). I'm sure there is some understanding that Beamer is only a short way from retirement, and I'm sure he has voiced that with Foster on numerous occasions. If Foster does leave (and he could go to any number of programs and be successful), it would spell the end of that relationship, and signal additional issues at VT.

What I'm saying is, he won't leave - but if he does, something is so broken that Foster has given up any hope of fixing it.

USC is a mess.....

Quote:
A "flat out brawl" broke out in USC's football locker room after the Trojans' 21-7 loss to Georgia Tech in the Sun Bowl, multiple sources have told ESPN.

The altercation, initially reported by the Los Angeles Daily News, began when one of the team's younger players was "bad-mouthing Matt Barkley." The player questioned why the quarterback did not play and challenged USC's collective senior leadership.

Several other upperclassmen, including senior safety T.J. McDonald, came to Barkley's defense, the sources said. A security guard confirmed only that "tempers flared," but other sources told ESPN that "it was haymakers."

According to the Daily News, freshman offensive tackle Zach Banner would not discuss the incident but did say, "It's going to be a whole new family atmosphere next season and you can quote me on that. For the seniors, it's terrible."

Coach Lane Kiffin could not be reached for comment by the Daily News.

Barkley, a one-time Heisman Trophy contender, did not play in the bowl game because of an injury to his shoulder. He was ruled out by the team's medical staff and previously missed USC's regular-season finale against Notre Dame after suffering the injury in the Nov. 17 game vs. UCLA.

Barkley's absence was one thread in a season full of disappointment for USC. The Trojans were the top-ranked team in the preseason but struggled mightily, finishing 7-6 overall and 5-4 in the Pac-12. Several players in USC's 2013 recruiting class -- at one time ranked No. 1 by ESPN.com -- also decommitted, including Max Redfield, the No. 2 athlete in the ESPN 150.

Quote:
Laquon Treadwell (Crete, Ill./Crete-Monee), the No. 1 wide receiver and No. 19 prospect in the ESPN 150, committed to Ole Miss on Thursday, choosing the Rebels over Oklahoma and Oklahoma State.

"There was one school that built a great relationship with me and my mother," he said. "This fall I will be playing my football at the University of Ole Miss."

Treadwell had the Rebels as his leader for quite some time after previously holding Michigan in the No. 1 spot. There were even a few times throughout the process where it looked like Treadwell would pull the trigger for the Wolverines.

Getting a commitment from top-ranked ESPN 150 wide receiver Laquon Treadwell was big for Ole Miss and it could be a sign of things to come for the Rebels -- who have their eyes on No. 1 overall ESPN 150 prospect Robert Nkemdiche, writes Dave Hooker. Blog Insider

But he decided to take his time and ultimately use his official visits, which led him to the three finalists.

"The recruiting process was something I took very seriously, but had a lot of fun with," he said. "I took my time in the process so I could make the right choice for myself."

The decision to choose Ole Miss, while surprising to some, wasn't completely out of the blue for Treadwell. His former high school teammate and close friend, Anthony Standifer, is a defensive back at Ole Miss. Standifer initially got Treadwell interested in the Rebels, and coach Hugh Freeze and his staff did the rest.

While the Rebels still could land another huge fish in defensive end Robert Nkemdiche (Loganville, Ga./Grayson), this is the first big splash for Freeze.

"I wanted to be a part of something special," Treadwell said. "The program is on the rise with the new coaching staff. (Freeze) is changing the culture, and I want to be a part of changing the Rebel culture."

Treadwell gives Ole Miss 21 commitments, 11 of whom are four-star prospects. Treadwell is the first ESPN 150 commit and the highest-ranked commitment in the class.
Another big catch for Ole Miss. I can't believe some of the athletes these second and third tier SEC schools are getting like Ole Miss, Mississippi State, and Vanderbilt.

it'd be amazing to see Vanderbilt 10 years from now winning NC after NC. like the Alabama of today... if Alabama isn't still Alabama in 10 years lol

Ole Miss hasn't been relevant since Eli Manning. Do they have a QB to throw the ball to this guy?

Bo Wallace had a pretty solid year last season. It's becoming very evident that Hugh Freeze was an outstanding hire by the school.

If Freeze gets this team on track Ole Miss is going to have trouble keeping him. Even after a contract extension last month he's only making $2 million per year, and there's plenty of programs that could nearly double that if they wanted to, and I doubt Ole Miss could match that. Freeze is a Mississippi native though so it's possible that he's got his dream job and won't leave the school if he becomes the hot candidate.

Peyton Manning's boys must be getting around that age when they can start being recruited for Ole Miss.
