Neither The Hunger Games (2008) nor Battle Royale (1999) novels are original concepts. Go back to The Running Man (1987) which was derived from Stephen King's Richard Bachman novel from 1982. Also, The Perverse Countess (1973), from Jesse Franco. Then, you can go way back to The Most Dangerous Game (1932) from a short story in 1924.

Why not go all the way back to the first written word then?

That's terrible, but I can see the business reasons for it. What takes the cake is the old "Critics are comparing it to the Hunger Games" but it is what it is.

New "unboxing" video of the Big Trouble blu I just uploaded for anyone interested.

I thinik it would be great if Arrow could release a Vincent Price boxset. I want to get the Arrow films, over the Shout releases, but it really starts to add up. A box set with some saving included would be aweome. There's already enough released to make a Volume one out of, and I imagine it would sell pretty well.

Ditto Bava. Arrow don't seem particularly 'keen' on box sets though, they've only released two. Actually, technically speaking, they haven't released any (yet).

Like I said that cover is tacky, but you went a bit too ignorant with your assessment of it in my opinion. If my ignorance is that something like The Running Man is more "source material" than Battle Royale for the Hunger Games, then I'd still politely disagree! My first reaction was "good for them!" lol

Your ignorance is that you'll slate The Hunger Games for stealing the concept of Battle Royale, whilst failing to acknowledge that the concept of gladiatorial combat has been around for millenniums or that the concept of children fighting each other for their lives might have (and almost certainly did) exist before Battle Royale.

Anyway, even if you believe Battle Royale to be the superior original, you can't deny that chatter about similarities between the two ultimately benefits Battle Royale more than it disadvantages The Hunger Games. Every time someone compares the two, it's just free promo for a cult Japanese book and film not many people in the mainstream has heard of, and that has to be a good thing (unless you're a hipster)...

Yeah, I'd love a Bava set too, more so than a VP one even. But it's true, they don't have a history of releasing such sets.

The main comparison is the teenagers, Buzz. Teenagers pitted against each other in a murderous game concocted by adults. This may have existed in some form or another in artwork(s) throughout history - but I'd say never in so close a relationship as these two films. I must have missed the gladiator subtext in Battle Royale as well!

Agreed it benefits BR more to compare the two, obviously. One of these movies made a billion dollars. The other is still unknown by (I'd guess) at least 80% of that audience. Which is why the Arrow cover is more funny to me than its tackiness is off-putting.

If you're gonna bring teenagers into it then I gotta bring up The Long Walk (1979), also a Bachman novel. King then went on to write The Running Man, which was nothing like the awful film with Arnold.

I can't justify upgrading the Bava titles seperately as I already have the R1 Anchor Bay DVD boxsets. But maybe if Arrow released a Bava boxset...

It's just basic marketing and very sensible to maximize potential profit. A few bombs and Arrow would likely have to reel in the more experimental and exciting releases they kindly bring us.

Its hardly as 'tacky' as the poorly scripted Hollywood trailers with cheesy VO, when there are no big name stars or directors involved they start to clutch at straws and come up with "From the writers of..." or "From the guys who bought you..."
