no, not at all
by special means for optimal playback (and without having to be forced to get all sorts of new computer components if you are not ready for them yet) but even by regular fully commercial means it's a go too (although for the latter you have to do all sorts of ridiculous stuff like by a special certified motherboard and CPU (although I think by now this actually includes probably most motherboard and CPUs of the last year or two) and then the official software doesn't have all the custom scaling and HDR adjustments and also downsamples audio to 16bits if you use analog out) and I think you probably also need Windows 10 for the official (can use as far back as Windows 7 for unofficial method) Last edited by WBMakeVMarsMovieNOW; 11-17-2020 at 10:00 PM. |

Apart from HDR, the digital download and streaming side is solid. The physical media playback is what's difficult, as it requires you to track down specific hardware to use, because UHD-BD-capable drives didn't catch on in Murica or the UK, so you have to track down the actual UHD-BD firmware-ready drives or hack one of the available models with firmware from those ready drives. You also have to have one of the slightly older Intel systems with SGX on the CPU and HDMI 2.0 output.
The BDA has not approved the DRM for Nvidia GPUs and AMD GPUs/CPUs and that landscape is changing all the time due to hardware/software attacks, with new DRM hardware processors coming soon - from Microsoft - to enable and handle universal DRM protection. Those processors will be built into future Intel and AMD CPUs and will likely enable UHD-BD playback on the latest hardware, with HDMI 2.1 and whatnot. |

If you are referring to streaming platforms, the download / playback is limited to 720p/1080p due to piracy concerns. Some reported that they can't even view in 4K on their browsers as the provider introduced new restrictions. What the providers advise is to play these on a capable 4K HDR TV either via built-in app or external devices.

Holy HDR!!!
I just finally got around to watching parts of this last night.. Not one of my fav looking discs but I did turn my backlight All the way down and it was much improved. I never had issues with any of my other 4k discs being too bright.. but this movie actually hurt my eyes in some scenes. Messed up master IMO.. Looks better then the Blu especially if I turn the backlight all the way down but a disappointing transfer IMO Hope LOTR and The Hobbit get better treatment. |

if they spent less on DRM that always fails and more on letting people widely, easily view stuff at the best quality, the way they want to they could afford to put out more titles and also get more sales per each title released and not have to pay the tons of millions they spend on DRM rights and research and placement, anything but a simple DVD-like DRM just backfires on everyone, including the studios |

Wow, finally got to watch the 4k transfer via iTunes and I have to say I'm disappointed.
This is a perfect example of what they call an upscale. I had to check the menu 3 times to make sure I was watching the 4k version. If the HDR badge didn't come up I wouldn't believe it. I'm not sure if it can be improved since it is the same situation as the prequel Star Wars films where everything is just shot on green screen. |

Many times they clearly don't know how to use the new tools available to them (HDR) correctly, so we end up getting pretty crap results. It's why you don't start seeing truly consistent transfers until about 2 years into a format's lifetime. ![]() |

Well, this might be anathema to some around here, but I just saw this and it was my first UHD blu-ray- I'd bought it a couple of years ago when I didn't have a player, but wanted the bonus disc and this edition was cheaper than the blu-ray. I managed to snag my first UHD player off of Ebay this week so now, I've seen it and I'm officially in the UHD club. I kinda have to process what I saw still as I don't fully know what to look for in the format, but I was pretty impressed.
I watch this movie every Thanksgiving as well as the 1933, so I'd just seen the regular blu and this kinda blew it out of the water. I'm still figuring out the best settings for my tv with the player. My tv is a low-nit and no wide color gamut affair, though it supports HDR10. 4K content on Disney Plus looks too dark to me and I've read that my tv probably doesn't handle HDR as well as a higher end set. Maybe that's why this disc didn't look blown out as some have suggested here, but I think I'll be watching the movie on this disc from here on out... Now, I'm in the wonderful position of deciding what title to pick up next. I'm watching the Middle Earth threads for everybody's thoughts on the regular... |
