If college coaches can up and leave for a different job whenever they want so should players. It's ridiculous that any player has to sit out a season just to transfer.

Under duress. His mom wouldn't sign the LOI to USC and pushed hard for him to sign with FSU, a school in which she would actually sign the LOI for. Now, it appears that his mom has changed her mind and just wants her son to be happy.

Perhaps, you should look at case law of contracts signed under duress.

I understand why he couldn't sign the USC one.... I don't understand the "duress" behind signing the other. Did she put a gun to his head? Get him drunk? Or did he just freak out and say, "well, guess I gotta sign with FSU"? If it's the latter, I don't think that's duress. That's just a stupid decision following his mom's stupidity.

If he didn't sign with FSU, mom was going to be pissed. That's duress. He signed only to please his mom.

He could have just not signed anywhere. It's an entirely optional choice.

I wonder how this will play out. It's very unlikely Thomas would win his appeal with the NCAA so if Thomas is truly set on leaving FSU he'll have to sit out next season and lose a season of eligibility. That's a big price to pay and I could see Thomas deciding to stay at FSU if he can't convince the coaches or NCAA to let him out of his letter of intent.

He'll enroll in a prep high school for this fall and then enroll at USC in January 2014. As such, he'll have his full 5 years to play 4, since he had never enrolled at FSU in the first place.

He's done with FSU. That ship has sailed. All Jimbo is doing is delaying his ability to play D1 football by a year.

This has to be the dumbest rule ever. When you're 18 you are an ADULT. At 18 you can sign up with the military on your own but not college football? It makes no sense.

But you don't even have to sign any of the paperwork. It's a completely optional thing that guarantees you to a school, but still allows multiple outs for a school.

For this kid pulling this crap, we could of lost out on players that really wanted to be at FSU. So I don't blame FSU for standing there ground on this.

Since USC participates in the National Letter of Intent program, he would lose 1 year of eligibility and be required to sit for 1 year AT USC. So he could go to school there next year, but he wouldn't be eligible to play there until 2014. If he waits until January 2014, he wouldn't become eligible until 2015.

Jay Harris says no to Michigan State, decides to become a rapper

Jay Harris, Downingtown East’s star wide receiver, said he phoned a Michigan State assistant two weeks ago and broke the news.

He would not be a Spartan.

“I wish we could’ve got you,” Harris said the coach told him.

It was not a rival program that drew Harris, but instead a different career path. The 5-foot-11, 162-pound senior said he wants to make it as a rapper.

John Lewandowski, Michigan State's associated athletic director/communications, said "it was a mutual decision."

He is ranked by ESPN as the state’s 17th ranked senior and second-best wideout. Harris scored 13 touchdowns last season on 54 catches for 792 yards.

“I’ve been thinking about doing this for a couple of years now,” said Harris, who perfoms under the name Jay DatBull.
His first single “DatBull 4 Life,” was uploaded to YouTube in late April and has surpassed 50,000 views.

Harris said he made his decision to forego football about a week before the video debuted. He knew people would watch it, Harris said, but not that many in such a short time.

A mixtape is slated for a June 1 release and Harris said he plans to work with a professional producer this summer.

“I try to take advantage of every opportunity I get and for him to like my music and reach it to me, I really appreciated that,” Harris said.

Harris said his commitment to Michigan State last year was “halfhearted.” He said he first flirted with a career in music during his freshman year at Downingtown East.

“I’ve always had this in the back of my head, but never had the courage to tell my parents that this is what I want to do,” Harris said.

That's not what I'm reading from the various people more knowledgeable with NCAA rules than I. From what I've gathered, going to prep school extends his high school student status, and his recruitment will start all over again, so he will get his 5 years to play 4.

While this doesn't exactly address the prep school issue, it sounds like he'd still be subject to penalty if he didn't get released from his NLI. From the NLI website:

Am I subject to the NLI penalty if I attend a school that does not participate in the NLI program?


No. If you sign an NLI you may attend any institution that does not subscribe to the NLI program without incurring any NLI penalties while at the non-participating school. Please note, though, if you would later transfer to an institution participating in the NLI program, the NLI penalties would be applied at your next NLI institution.
