I know, I know U.S. funny book movie chat again but having watched it on 4K last night after my initial cinema viewing over two years ago now (AH!), Aquaman remains by far and away the one DC comics film of the last decade I thoroughly enjoy front to back. Pure poppy fantasy spectacle that makes the MCU's Infinity two-fer feel positively restrained by comparison. That and being it's own standalone film (barring a thankfully very fleeting Justice League reference) helps enormously.

I also loved Aquaman. Shazam was also great. I think DC's light course-correction of focusing on standalone features that may-or-may-not connect to other movies was the right move. I wish the first WW movie hadn't had its modern-day BvS tie-in framing device, so it could actually be a standalone movie, but eh. It's harder to ignore than Aquaman's one Steppenwolf line.

David Fincher directed that movie because of the ending. He knew people would be talking about it 20 + years later.

He was right.

Agreed, that ending left me shook well after the film ended.

Predicting stuff that happens in films before they happen is way over-egged as criticism. I mean a large part of the ending of Se7en is inevitability and unavoidable reality of the situation, I do find it weird it’s hyped up as this “greatest twist ending” because ‘the box’ itself doesn’t particularly shape the film massively in terms of great twists, it’s more that it’s a misdirection that the final victim is
[Show spoiler]John Doe himself and his overall victory.

I mean it’s pretty hard after a while to do a real left-field twist nowadays because everything has to be shaped into a believable context. Like I rewatched Us last night, and as a twist ending you’re kinda ahead of it because there is a level of ‘blanks’ in the narrative and the fact we’re used to role reversals in that style of concept. But Us as a film works for me because it’s about that hidden ‘other side’ to people and society as a whole and the ending largely complicated that. I think if you’re pulling twists nowadays you need to do stuff like Knives Out of deliver a shock early doors that changes the fundamentals of which you’re playing with, and even then, the actual ending there is fairly given early on.

I never saw Se7en as having a twist ending, just tragic. I've seen movies that I thought tried to hide a twist but couldn't (I'm looking at you Shutter Island) and thus annoyed me.

It's been about 20 years since I last saw Se7en, but was it ever actually revealed what was in the box, or was it left for the viewers to figure it out? I don't recall seeing it or even having it spoken through dialog. I mean we kind of assume that is was a box full of Cool World VHS tapes, but do we really know?

The criticism of a film being "dated" is a bit nonsensical.

At one point or another, all films are dated.

Wait... someone likes Robocop 3? Well, that's not just unpopular but unheard of! T3 is a masterpiece by comparison lol.

Here's a good one for you, Birth of a Nation is only considered as offensive as it is due to people's ignorance and not actually watching the movie with some maturity. The film is considered the most racist ever. I don't believe that for a second. I watched it expecting so much offensive content and ended it with, "was that it?" It's a great film with so much over the top stereotypes (not uncommon in silent films). It's easy to point the finger and criticise. It's creating drama for drama's sake and undermines the incredible achievement that the film really is.

Yeah, I know. I'm a terrible person. lol

If a movie can be timeless, a movie can be dated. Yes, you're technically correct, but colloquially that's not how the word is used.

Nothing about the heroic KKK defending true American values, and swooping in to save the women from the animalistic blacks seemed offensive to you?

Se7en's twist was executed well and it's still the best film in the genre.

I will join you with that opinion. Actually I will admit that after Termintor 1 for me Terminator Genisys is the second best film in the series.

The only twist in the ending of Seven was that we never saw the 6th victim. The whole purpose of the trip to the desert was for John Doe to show us where he had dumped remains of his final two victims.

Why would it? It's a movie. A very old movie, one made out of ignorance and based on a book. It's not offensive because I chose not to make it so. Why? Because I'm a grown adult who can see it for what it is. I took the time to read up on it. I studied the movie before I watched it. I know why it was made the way it was. It wasn't done out of hate. I'm mature enough to see that it isn't what people claim it is.

If you find a 100+ yr old movie offensive, you need to do a lot of soul searching. You'll find considerably more offensive content in Spike Lee's movies. A well known racist who tried to make his own awful take on the film.
