Secondly, I'm not questioning (and have never questioned) that there may be a small core group of people who may have enjoyed the movie. You might say that it's not really so small - and that is where we should simply agree to disagree, because you'll never convince me otherwise, and I have no interest in convincing you (or anybody else) that it really is a rather tiny group.

If we take that statement and put it together with your own earlier contention that the movie is really liked by many who have seen it (which personally I really doubt) then we would arrive at a conclusion that the movie was liked by... a small number of people.

See? Even when I follow your own logic, the conclusion is still the same: only a small number of people liked JC.
At this point I cannot think anything else but that you are trolling.
I'm done with this.

Five Stars. I saw this movie twice in IMAX, haven't had such a great time in the theaters in a long time before seeing this movie. Utterly great way to escape.

Another thing is if you read his posts he contradicts himself.. for example over in the 3d section he argued for star wars 3d having a great level of 3d and it was a level of 3d he enjoyed because he preferred weak 3d conversions. Yet his comment about John Carters 3d was that it was too weak and it needed to be stronger so it was rubbish, despite everyone agreeing John Carter had better 3d than Star wars and him saying he liked weak conversions. I think he has it out for John Carter either that or one minute he likes strong 3d and the next minute he prefers weak 3d.

Had to get that out there his trolling for the sake of trolling is getting tiresome.

I'm right there with you guys. I get the feeling that he hasn't seen the movie and is just here to rattle everyone's chain that has seen it. I just hope all this back and forth nonesense doesn't discourage anyone from going to check it out. Bottom line, the trailer didn't do the movie just and it deserves better than it is being given.

I don't get all the talk of this movie bombing. I saw it last week and it was fine it wasn't the best movie I'v ever seen but it was far from sucking. I will be buying this on bluray They should have opened it in the summer. I liked it more than cowboys vs alien and super 8.

Ordered my IMAX-3D ticket about 15 mins ago Online.

Going to the 12:15pm showing in just under 12 hours.

Love the early show

. Snagged my usual Dead Center/Last Row Seat. Just a bit above Center Screen, perfect view.

I'm glad other people are noticing his obvious trolling, it's really not necessary and gets obnoxious after seeing him post the same stuff over and over again. You didn't like the movie (if you even saw it), we get it. It made 55% less the second week than the first, okay. Every time someone comes in and says they enjoyed the movie, which from what I've seen is most people on here, he feels the need to come back and try to knock the movie down. What is the point? I have enjoyed this thread and feel good about so many other people who have actually seen the movie like it as much as I did. Troll aside, I loved the movie, and this thread, and will be one of those who will buy this blu upon its release. Maybe I'll give the books a read, since a sequel seems very unlikely. I liked John Carter, and nothing you can say will convince me otherwise! Good night!

What a mess! It was all over the place, choppy, and incoherent. And the 3D was awful. I'm surprised they green lit a $250M production to Andrew Stanton (I love Finding Nemo and Wall-E) for his first live action film. Gore Verbinski would have been a better choice for this. 2/5 Thanks to DMR though, I got my movie passes for free. Still, I was hoping to be thoroughly entertained. Hopefully, The Hunger Games will make up for it this weekend.

You really should, the books are awesome, and even though they were written a long time ago they're still easy to read imo. Do keep in mind Stanton made plenty of changes, so if you just want to finish the 'trilogy' the movie was supposed to start, it probably won't work. He did capture the feel and the characters are obviously the same, so you'll still enjoy the books.

The film has made 179 million already, and will continue to make money. I believe it will make its 250 million back and be profitable when it is released on blu, netflix, etc.

I wish this hadn't been a Disney film, it needed a more Adult feel imo and if it had stayed truer to the books I feel it would of been better.

I reckon the whole "Disney" thing put off most adults.

Also its a shame we probably won't get a sequel as Gods of Mars is better then A Princess of Mars.

You do realize half of the money this movie makes during it's theatrical run goes to the theatres right? So even if Carter manages to make 400 million dollars worlwide, which I (sadly) don't think it will, only 200 million dollars will go to Disney. So if Carter cost 250 + marketing (nobody seems to know how much that is), they're going to lose a ton of money. I'm not sure how much money companies usually make on BD/DVD sales, but I'm guessing at this point breaking even is the best thing Disney can hope for when it comes to JC. Besides we have no idea how well Carter will sell when it's released. Maybe one day it will be profitable but right now I wouldn't count on it.

I checked this out at my local IMAX last night. I was definitely impressed. I would have seen it no matter what as I've always been impressed by Andrew Stanton's Pixar output, and he did not disappoint.

I really do think the poor box office performance of this film has a lot to do with the fact that the pundits chose this one to pile onto as the "most likely box office catastrophe of the year". For months before it arrived, people who hadn't seen the movie insisted it was going to crash and burn. You can't tell me that doesn't have an impact on whether people are going to show up.

John Carter? No - that's the movie everyone says is going to fail in a big way. I don't want to go see that.

It's unfortunate because Stanton deserves a greater success, and the property is well set up for solid sequels.

I can see where you're coming from but alot of people read ERB's stories when they were in their early teens, so I think the fact that it's aimed at kids is fine with me. I thought the books were pretty soft too, except for the Thark culture, which is pretty harsh, and the occasional killings commited by Carter they're not that adult to me. Besides, in the movie we get
[Show spoiler]JC taking on a whole freaking army, blue blood flying all over the screen, a decapitation, two giant apes killed and a flashback to a killed wife and daughter
I'd say that's pretty mature.

Agreed. I don't think the movie is really toned down from the books much at all.

The worst thing about Carter not doing well, thus preventing Stanton from making 'The Gods of Mars' is that I'll never know in what position he was going to put the Black Pirates (aka First Born) of Barsoom. He made the Therns so powerful and kind of gave them the position of closest to Issus. While in fact the Black Pirates kinda toy with the Therns in 'Gods', are more powerful and in direct contact with 'the godess'. We won't get to see Thuvia and I guess we'll have to do with
[Show spoiler]the dead banths in the arena
and the artwork in the book 'The artwork of John Carter' because we won't get to see a living one. BTW here's a link to that 'banth' artwork: http://s3.amazonaws.com/coolproducti...jpg?1330766681

I saw it opening weekend (IMAX 3D) and it was ok. The film has flopped, sad to say.

I really doubt the average moviegoer reads pundits. The pundits picked up on how aimless/uninteresting the marketing was and I think they were right in predicting it wouldn't grab audiences' interest, at least enough to make this movie successful.

I like the movie, but it is a big loser in box office terms. $250 million to produce and another $100 million for marketing. It would need aprox $625 million to break even (remember theater owners keep an average of 50% of box office receipts...the longer the movie plays the larger the % for theater owners) and it is not happening. Disney is already taking a huge hit with it.

A great start overseas but it dropped 55% from its debut weekend (not counting China's 10 million debut)...I liked the movie and would love a sequel, but it is not going to happen. With The Hunger Games and Wrath of the Titans releasing in the next two weeks, John Carter will not get close to $100 domestic .

Last edited by Blu Titan; 03-21-2012 at 05:49 PM. Reason: break even amount is $625 million (2.5 X Production)
