Yeah, the killing of the muskrat was cut by fifteen seconds, with Shameless repeating other footage to mask it so the soundtrack remains intact. All other scenes of animal cruelty are uncut, though.

I'm never actually watched the re-edit on the Shameless disc. I don't know if Deodato was actively involved in editing it, or whether Shameless did it and Deodato simply signed off on it.

Just found out about this. Very sad. A true legend. Always loved his little cameo in Hostel II. He played the Italian cannibal and cut up Viktor Krum from Harry Potter.

Incredibly sad and unexpected news.

Although Umberto Lenzi should be credited as the originator of the Italian Cannibal Film Sub-genre with his film Man From Deep River (1972), I feel that Ruggero Deodato will always be the "King Of The Cannibals".

Cannibal Holocaust (1980) remains as one of the most (if not the most) brutal, unforgiving, challenging, upsetting, yet deeply captivating cinematic experiences I have ever had the pleasure to endure and survive in my entire life. Truly a film that will (or probably should) never be made again. However, for those brave enough to view it completely uncut/uncensored with an open mind (and an iron stomach), it will prove to be a movie that lasts with you forever... for better or for worse.

So in other words: "THANK YOU" Ruggero Deodato, your films are more influential and beloved than you may have known and you are a true maestro del cinema!

Uncut if you chose that option.

Honestly though, the cut in the 88 release is one of the best censor cuts I've seen, as you get the shock retained and just lose the actual kill. It doesn't jar like some cuts can. There's really no way to get the rest of the 5 seconds passed in the UK unless the law changes, the BBFC can't waive cruelty cuts in the same way they can other censor cuts. They've got around the other stuff now because the animals killed were clean kills or genuinely eaten IIRC.
