I'm guessing no later than July we'll finally get a release date for this (and hopefully full specs, including what the new scenes consist of.)

I'm too excited for this! 20-25 minutes is quite a lot of new footage. I'm especially looking forward to the "Hobbiton flashback scene" involving Gandalf's first encounter with Bilbo; apparently Ian McKellan had a large part in the making of that scene.

I just hope that it is really a flashback 20 or so min into it, and not inserted in the beginning of the film.

And my dream Extended Cut would have Jackson edit the Loney Mt prologue into the dinner scene and have the film start instead with "In a hole in the ground there lived a Hobbit" as what should have been done the first time. If you end up watching all the Hobbit, and LotR films in order it makes much more sense this way. But he just has to have a prologue in every single Tolkien film.

But alas, I know there is no way that is going to happen. As he just has to have a prologue in every single Tolkien film.

It's not like The Hobbit had all that much character development and the extra scenes would bring that out further. We don't really need more wandering in the woods or even another battle scene.

One exception was that I saw the longer cut of "Dances With Wolves" at a theatre in London many years ago, and I thought that was far better than the original theatrical cut because the additional footage answered so many questions that were cut out of the original.
There are quite a few movies that benefit from their extended/alternate cut.

Three that instantly spring to mind are: Kingdom of Heaven, Sucker Punch, Blade Runner.

As well, all the LOTR films were better in their extended versions, which bodes well for The Hobbit: AUJ. I'm extremely excited for the extended edition, whenever it is released.

Taking into account we're a month away from SDCC, it's a safe bet the Extended Edition will be announced there with a trailer release.

All the LOTR films are much better in their extended versions which is why Im waiting for the Hobbit EE too. I really enjoyed the theatrical cut of The Hobbit though.

Kingdom of Heaven is a completely different beast in its extended form. Theatrical cut is a bit of a hurried mess. Extended cut is an excellent film and one of Ridley's best.

Great example, Jim — we can only hope The Hobbit AUJ sees similar benefit.

Not that I'm slagging the cinema cut — I quite enjoy it myself, though I acknowledge it doesn't grab me as much as I'd hoped, or as much as the LotR flicks did.

And therein lies the difference: the LotR films are complete, acclaimed films in their basic versions, and the extensions where cherries on top that served to deepen the characters and story the films depicted; whereas a lot of people seem to be counting on the EE of The Hobbit to deliver a version of the film that they can really get behind.

Overstated? Not meant to be, but I hope my gist is clear anyway.

I think I'll probably get the standard 3D edition for now, and wait until they release the ultimate LOTR/Hobbit Mount Doom Extended Tolkien edition with collectible Smaug

Maybe it was because it was my first watch but I preferred watching the Theatrical cut in 2D as opposed to 3D. I watched the first half in 3D but kept thinking I was missing something. Swapped to 2D for the second half. Id like the option of both though for the EE.

Hobbit is a much lighter tale. I didn't expect it carry the dramatic heft or sense of self-importance that drives the LOTR movies, and it sure didn't. It's enjoyable froth, and I can't imagine that the EE will lend it the gravitas of the LOTR flicks.

I agree with you about the LOTR EE's though, it's the theatrical versions that nabbed all those awards and hoovered up all that coinage. As movie adaptations they are as tight as can be, whereas the EE's are more like rambling mini-series versions. Both editions have their own merits.

Not sure why the DB entry says 2 cuts are included, it's likely only the extended, just like they've done with LOTR.

Wonder if the Blu-ray 3D is just the 2-Disc theatrical cut included in the set. Has there ever been an extended 3D cut of any movie to date?

I'd say you're likely correct. The current Blu-ray 3D + Blu-ray release has 4 BDs. In order to accommodate 2 cuts of each film, they'd probably have to release as 8 (!!!) separate BDs (unless they used some intelligent seamless branching).

If they did provide both cuts on 8 BDs, I'd expect to pay a pretty high price for the entire package. I'd rather just have the extended cut rather than pay for an 8 BD release.

Apparently the Extended edition's rating has been granted again for PG-13, but has changed slightly.

"in theatres, the PG-13 rating was for ‘intense fantasy action violence and frightening images.’ Here’s what the rating says for the extended version:
‘Rated PG-13 for extended sequences of intense fantasy action violence, frightening images and fleeting nudity.’

Yes, fleeting nudity.
