His messing with you (kidn of). It will only play mp3's. Other than bitrate (which you cannot add after the fact) your music is already in the format it needs to be if it is indeed mp3. Don't make this harder than it need to be.

The part I really like about the 2.0 update is that it allows me to backup my downloaded content. I've got close to 200GB is digital games and that would take a major long time and use up bandwidth caps.

They recently updated that the backup feature will not be in 2.0.

I'm disappointed because that was the only useful feature for me since I plan on upgrading to 2TB around Christmas. Don't fancy having to download and install all those games and updates again

Once a file is converted to mp3, the damage (compression) has already been done.
The formats suported wil be MP3, MP4, M4A, and 3GP.

MP4A uses AAC, which is "similar but superior to MP3".

The 3GP format is designed around the same basics as the MP4 audio standards, but is also designed for mobile devices like phones and thus files are likely to be more compressed.

So it looks that for now (until more standards are made available), M4A is your best bet (it is limited to 48Khz in the converter I use, but can go above 400kps bitrate -your average mp3 is between 128 and 320kbps-).

I advise the use of Xmedia recode because it can pretty much convert anything into anything and I've used it for years now.

PS: If your base format is CD audio or above quality that is. If you just already have a mp3 collection, there's no sense in converting that, just use it directly.

I swear, they no idea what they are doing. Instead of implementing a much needed feature as that, they include MP3, SMH

MP3 playback has been asked by a -ton- of people.

Much more so than DLNA and BAckup feature afaik.

I would agree that it's a quite important one, particularly for people who are planning to change their HDD, but it's importance compared to other features is entirely subjective I think.

Back in March, the "most requested" features were added and it was Dimming the light on the DS4, and being able to record video/ Screenshots on an external hard drive...

Right now, it looks like the most popular demands is being able to have friend notifications (something I actually -don't- want / it would probably -hopefully- be able to be disabled in the settings though. I hope.) and background color/ themes, and mp3 playback.

A while ago the list of most popular requestd features was posted, and I was very surprised at how low the media remote control support (BT) was, per example, something that I consider very important and until which the PS4 will be a secondary player in the bedroom vs the PS3 in the living room for me.

Not to patch in the current BT remote is insane.. I tried to use the PS4 to watch a movie one night and I just had to stop about 8 min in because the controls were hard to remember and I think I was trying to figure out how to step forward.

there is no reason why they couldn't have even created a new remote. why it wasn't available day one is mind blowing... something the PS3 had right off the bat almost
