Yes, there are two versions of the Manga movie. The first was a recut of the OVAs that dropped a bunch of footage and the second was a version uploaded to YouTube, that was pared down to content from the first four episodes, for some reason. Whatever the case, it's not something anyone needs to see again. The only thing that's needed from the original 90's release, is the English dub, if it is intact and can be licensed. One of the things I noticed - which is probably a typo - is that the release is going to be on a single disc (BD-25, per the page), so the extras might be sparse, especially as Robert says they will use high-bitrate video encoding.

Regarding AnimEigo’s upcoming Kickstarter of Macross II:

I noticed the english dub was not listed, is that still waiting on clearance?

Here's a bit more:

"Macross Zero" is revived with AI remastered technology. Director Masaharu Kawamori also commented, "I was able to express what I wanted to do at the time even more."

Macross Zero Blu-ray Box Premium Remastered Edition," which revives the visual beauty of the 20th anniversary commemorative work "Macross Zero" with the latest AI remastered technology, drawn with the first full-scale CG mechanical action in the "Macross" series, will be released on February 2024, 2.

After 20 years, the monitors you see have evolved, and the materials themselves need to be upgraded. In the meantime, I was given the opportunity to remaster Macross Zero again.

I watched the test video, and it was impressive that the hand-drawn lines fit into the space while being able to see them well. The details and sense of distance of dark scenes are depicted very well, and the spatial expression is wider than before.

In particular, the air battle scenes in episode 5 were created with a focus on the three-dimensional effect of the clouds, and the video was able to further express what "I wanted to do at the time".

"Macross Zero" depicts the origin of the series before First Macross. Come and see its mythical story.

AI Remaster
they already released a perfectly fine Blu-ray before where i believe the show was recomposited in a native HD resolution, them doing a new AI upscale is just cheap

Already have the original JP release. Zero is on the list for an eventual western release isn't it? I'll probably wait and see what that looks like and make do with the original release in the meantime.

While it has been confirmed to be available for licensing internationally, it has yet to be announced as such.

Indeed, that's true, although it wouldn't surprise me if someone has it (unannounced). Either way I'm confident that it'll come eventually and I'm in no rush to swap out the existing version which will suffice in the meantime.

In the last Discotek stream they said there were no Macross titles available for them to license, so someone must already have it.

I wouldn’t take that as any sort of confirmation that Macross Zero has been licensed. They didn’t specifically mention it and could have easily meant II: Lovers Again, 7, Delta, Frontier, and Plus were already licensed. I also doubt Discotek would spill the beans on a license they’re not involved in.

I assume that everything apart from Macross 2 and Macross Plus - for US release - is at Crunchyroll/Funimation and it really makes sense for it to be there, given the branding demographic overlap between the idol music-centric content and the company. Sentai probably gave up any shot at Macross on BD and licensed the old ADV dub to them for whatever release of that pops up.

I took it as anything Macross is either taken or not available for license, and they didn't specify if Zero was either. It was a generalized answer though so could be right.

Either way we're not seeing any from Discotek.

NO-shittyroll is the last place I want to see Macross Frontier end up at-same for Macross+ or Delta. Oh well, I already have the jpbd set for Frontier and the 2 movies so I really don't give a damn-it's just that I'll feel bad for any dealings with the afore mentioned company. Sentai would be the perfect place for Frontier and +. They'd give both the proper respect and treatment they deserve.

While it’s true 7, Delta, and Frontier are technically under Crunchyroll’s roof, they’re still licensed through Nozomi who have been allowed to operate independently, for the time being. Macross Plus on the other hand is with Anime Limited. So it’s not a completely dire situation.

So while the old US Renditions dub is still a work in progress, I asked Bob if that the kickstarter was an absolute raging success, could a new dub potentially be in the cards?

Quote:
Yes, if the KS is super-successful, we could do a dub, but it would have a schedule impact.

Shouldn't the fact that Roy is in Macross Zero mean that it isn't available to be licensed though?

Oh and I really hope that the inclusion of English subtitles gets us the obvious move of doing that for OG Macross and DYRL, something that I majorly surprised didn't happen on the previous releases.

Bigwest confirmed it wasn’t a problem during their Otakon panel last year.

Should have done that to begin with, then HG can go f**k themselves. English subs on the BV releases and then, if it ever appears, block the Robotech movie in Japan to really screw them over.

I'm 100% fine with a new dub replacing the original dub. I don't remember the old one well enough to have any feelings for it, I just think it's an essential inclusion since it already existed back in the day and this is a US release.
