I can confirm I'm seeing this too, watching it in DV. Didn't notice it the first time round

If you are referring to the grinner in the background, that was a customer. You are mixing the grinner in the background for the Librarian who found a book for a kid. Watch it again.

Uh oh, is that the infamous OLED "swarming ants" effect?

I watched the first 40 minutes of this last night. What a stunning looking movie, looking forward to watching the rest later.

I did not notice that issue in my viewing. I'll have to double check that timestamp later tonight.

Disc Review: IT

How's the movie?
This was blind buy based on reviews here and on the web. This movie was very much a Stephen King movie, in the best way possible. Some complained that the movie wasn't a "horror" movie. King's stories are rarely about hack n slash, and tend to focus more on some sort of haunting Devilry surrounding imperfect people.

This movie checks off all the common King tropes:
  • Creepy, sadistic parents who border on psychotic? Check
  • Creepy, sadistic high school bullies who border on psychotic? Check
  • Characters (kids) who form a bond based on their misfit status who's caring bond may or may not carry them through the surrounding evils? Check
  • Townspeople who seem wildly unaware/uncaring about the horrors going on in their town? Check
  • A creepy story, that can seem cruel at moments, but has a way of showing off moments of real heart? Check

I have nitpicks with the movie, but overall, this felt like a Stephen King story, which is a good thing.

How's the picture?
The PQ is spot on - meaning, everything always feels natural. This film isn't trying to wow you with fancy sets/lighting. The film takes place in a small town. You'll be treated to amazing vistas, such as, the dirt road... the inside of a house... inside of a library... the inside of a garage... Of course, there are moments when we go inside a cave, hanging out at a lake... In all of these instances, whether indoors outdoors in full sunshine or inside the dark depths of a cave, the PQ doesn't falter one bit.

Cave interiors and shadows are deep and, at times, inky. Sunlight looks natural - bright, but not overblown. Dirt roads and wood/brick buildings come through as authentic. Fine details are always abundant without calling attention to themselves. Facial details and sweat are always on clear display.

Any showcase HDR highlights?
While the HDR mainly pays service to providing a pleasing, natural picture, it does have a handful of moments that shine (literally). As dark areas are explored, flashlights are a real HDR highlight here (Come on! you knew that was coming!). The flashlights aren't just bright, they are pure liquid light. Almost a thing of beauty. While there are other moments where HDR is at work, I don't know that I would label any of them "striking" - except perhaps a moment where Pennywise is dancing against an orange backdrop).

How's the sound?
I have a very capable 5.1 system. (Can't do Atmos due to vaulted ceilings. ) The sound design was fun and fit the story. Bass mostly accompanies music cues to build tension, and can be quite forceful at time. Surrounds are used well for ambience and off stage voices, etc. Voices were mixed a little low, which can be annoying for a dialogue heavy movie, but overall, this track complimented the movie to great affect.

Final Thoughts
This is a fine transfer that strikes the right balance on clarity, coloring, HDR when it counts, and a good sound design mixed together to provide a well told movie version of a Stephen King novel.

UHD Recommended.

I couldn't enjoy watching a movie in parts like that. It breaks the momentum! IT is only 2 hours.

Sometimes we gotta make sacrifices! Ideally I'd like to sit down to watch a two hour movie every time, however, life gets in the way, so I understand the struggle. You learn to deal with it after a while. I have young kids who need my attention first and foremost when I get home from work, so that means I don't get to start a movie until after they are in bed. My wife doesn't care for a lot of the movies I watch, so I generally wait until she goes to bed to begin a movie, too. So my window between all of that and my bedtime shrinks. I have to consider how early I have to wake up, usually at 6:00 to get the kids ready for school and myself ready for work.

Freakin' A... adulting is hard.

What you are seeing is part of the wire coming from the pole.

Sorry my phone isn’t allowing me to take a screenshot but if you look during his conversation about the house fire you can clearly see the pole in the background.

I don't think that's what he's talking about. There's weird speckles on the rooftops in the background below the feint wire you mentioned.

But no my copy doesn’t have those speckles, it’s my fault for not understanding what he was talking about, I have a 4k 65 inch lg by the way.

Probably it.

It's the first time I've experienced it. I wonder what causes it.

It's not a glaring issue, but it's still a bit odd.

I kept forgetting how much of this movie was dark and shot indoors and then an outdoor scene would come on and blind me. Looks beautiful though.

I'm gonna guess it's in the source, with HDR exaggerating the issue. You can see it in this compressed 4K cap, just not as much.

1080p version probably smudges it away.

Finished watching this last night, great movie, really well done. Good FX, great performances, very natural. The cinematography was fantastic. I stuck the blu in afterwards and it looked really soft, is that just my eyes playing tricks on me after watching the 4K version? Possibly.

Anyway this was certainly long enough, I'm not sure i'll have the desire to double dip for the extended cut later in the year but I guess it depends what they add.

Overall though a great looking 4K disc.
