I agree that the ending was absurd as far as realism goes, but it was still pretty awesome in it's grand guignol spectacle!

Opera

This is only the second Dario Argento movie I've seen, which is a major oversight on my part, because both this and the first I saw, Phenomena, are great movies. I absolutely love how, well, operatic Italian genre films are, with lots of music, brutal action, and grandiose stories. Even a relatively modest plot like this one has is told with some brilliant flair. The transition to the opera performing is a hallmark, as is the keyhole death scene, which is worthy for nomination in the "greatest kills in Horror" list. I'll hopefully be catching more Argento this month.

I had never seen the remake nor the sequels to the original movie so I thought I'd kill two stuffed birds with one stone, and it works fine because the Van Sant film is a shot-for-shot remake. As far as this one goes though. It was much better than I expected it would be. Perkins was fantastic and the plot took so many twists and turns to keep things interesting. There was a nice wry sense of black humour to the proceedings as well which is right up my street. Colour me impressed. Looking forward to the third film now.

10/06 Ghoulies IV (1994)

Peter Liapis seems happy to be back for the final film, Stacie Randall has a similarly strong energy, having no trouble playing serious while wearing black leather, and Barbara Alyn Woods is solid as well here. The trouble is the confused vision. Although it's meant to be a follow up to the original it makes up some alternate version of previous events and the mythology is hazy as well. The Ghoulies are played by people in costumes. I didn't mind as much as most seem to because they at least got a modest IQ bump. Regardless, they felt like an afterthought.

Have you been watching the Red Letter Media reviews of the series? I've never seen the sequels or the remake either, but kinda want to now, even though I know exactly what happens.

Funny you should bring that up, I literally just finished watching part 1/2 of their Psycho Franchise re:View there now. I will have to watch Psycho 3 and 4 before I watch part 2/2 of their re:View though.

PS. I loved Bates Motel and would strongly recommend that show. The performances were outstanding and it adds a lot to the mythology in interesting ways.

10/6:

The Return of the Vampire (1943) *First time viewing*
The unofficial sequel to Dracula has a lot of cheesy dialogue, a dumb, plot hole ridden and heavily inconsistent plot but it's still an enjoyable watch thanks to Bela Lugosi, who still aces it as "Dracula" plus there's a lot of funny moments along and the gothic atmosphere is still there, but not as strong as Universal's Dracula films.

10/06/18:

-Tucker & Dale vs. Evil (2011):

Frequently riotous horror/comedy about a pair of backwoods “rednecks” (Alan Tudyk and Tyler Labine) who run afoul of a gaggle of popped-collar college-kid douchebags…but this isn’t Deliverance, and they’re totally innocent of the bad deeds the youngsters consistently think of them as the misinformation builds into a pile of bodies neither side truly intended. Despite the enthusiastic outbursts of gore (including the best use of a woodchipper since Fargo), Tucker & Dale shoots for comic timing, and it’s great fun seeing Tudyk and Labine play off of each other in their shared astonishment as they witness what they think is a “suicide pact” as the college kids inadvertently off themselves in hilariously gruesome ways. Terrific fun.

-Island Claws * (1980):

Genetic modification of crabs results in one giant specimen “terrorizing” a small island community in this logy snoozer which plays like a 1955 drive-in cheapie that somehow got released a quarter-century too late. The King Crab doesn’t actually appear until the last ten minutes, leaving the rest of the film trying to build tension with swarms of regular-sized ones skittering around very…very…slowly. Some unintentional yuks to be had, sure, but not enough to stave off the sandman for very long.

-The Bride * (1985):

Lavish, literate quasi-sequel to The Bride Of Frankenstein basically opens where that 1935 classic climaxed, with Baron Frankenstein (Sting…!) creating the titular Bride (a luminously beautiful Jennifer Beals, in her Flashdance prime) in order to appease his Monster (Clancy Brown), only to cast his creation out during a fierce lightning storm and subsequent fire in his castle laboratory. Thinking the Monster dead, Frankenstein gradually acclimates his Bride (he names “Eva”) to the scriptures and mores of polite society, as the Monster befriends a wandering midget (David Rappaport from Time Bandits) and works his way through a brief stint in the circus as he plans to make enough scratch to get back to his lady love. Director Franc Roddam has made an extremely handsome period production, here (with excellent photography by Brain De Palma favorite Stephen H. Burum and a superb symphonic score by Maurice Jarre), and the film works well as a somewhat slow-paced period romance, but the pulp horror elements get suffocated by all of the Merchant/Ivory finery on display, and Sting’s portrayal as the “mad” Dr. F is wholly ineffective, draining the classic story of its masochistic energy. It’s a good film that’s never less than watchable, but it could, and should, have been more, and those expecting the more familiar trappings of the Universal or Hammer takes on Mary Shelley’s text will likely be left wanting.

Tales of Halloween*: 1/2

I usually like anthology horror movies, but this one is definitely a mixed bag of stories. With 10 stories, it does feel like a bit much sometimes. The first 3 or so are really good, but the rest are either really mediocre or just plain bad. None of them are particularly scary and most are too cheesy for their own good.

I will comment on some aspects of the movie, mostly cause I feel like doing it.

[Show spoiler]Too many "****" and "*****", specially the "****s". And weird looking face close ups... They feel too claustrophobic. The "Love Hurts" in the beggining, yeah, weird. I dunno how I barely remember all this details after watching the movie last year (or was it 2016?). The nurse at Smith Grove was a ***** honestly, and the Mama Myers suicide was really sad, after everthing that happened, your son being a psycopath must have been just it. The rape scene is way too much. The guy who was nice to him didn't deserved to die, IMO, but I liked the reference to Halloween 2. Oh, and then Mr. Sandman played. So cool. I want the 2018 movie to include it too.

I believe Ben's death (Lynda's boyfriend) makes more sense here cause Michale chokes him instead of just stabbing him in a difficult way of actually killing with a knife. And Lynda reminds me of the Judith from this movie. I liked Laurie's fathers. They were good people.

Danielle Harris was 30 in this, and I still can't believe there's people at that age that looks like seniors. Unless I'm used to high school movies with adults and that's why I see it like that.

I much prefer the actual remake part of the original, while the original added bits in the beggining aren't my cup of tea. And everything since the Trick and Treat title card was nicely done IMO.

But overall, I like the movie.

I was about 10 years old when this came out and I still remember the trailers (which the Scream factory set includes on the disc)... a low budget horror flick enhanced by a terrific music score from the legendary Bernard Herrmann. The plot sounds absurd (a killer baby) and it is really, but director Larry Cohen makes it all work as well as he can. Followed by 2 sequels which I'll also be watching this month!

*Strait-Jacket (1964) “Hagsploitation“: a subgenre that features a formerly-glamorous older woman who has become mentally unbalanced and terrorizes those around her. The great Joan Crawford stars in this schlocky thriller from William Castle. Crawford plays a convicted axe-murderess, Lucy Harbin, who is released from an asylum where she was sent 20 years ago for slaying her unfaithful husband. Lucy goes to stay at her brother's farm and reconnect with her grown daughter, Carol, who saw her mother decapitate her father and lover as a young child. A pretty unique film for Crawford who plays it straight and gives a pretty damn good performance as always.

Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter (1984) Thanks to the return of legendary special make-up effects artist, Tom Savini, the kills are more brutal and nastier, and the gore has been amped up! The film picks up right after the events of the last one and Jason’s body is taken to the hospital morgue where he mysteriously returns to life killing two hospital workers all the while he makes his way back to Camp Crystal Lake, where horny teenagers have decided to stay for some fun.

Night of the Living Dead (1990) While this film feels a bit like a made-for-tv movie, it’s a worthy remake. The both leads, Tony Todd and Patricia Tallman, do an excellent job in portraying the characters of Ben and Barbara, Barbara of which is an improvement over the original character. I’ve always liked the make-up for these zombies and I believe Tom Savini had said they’d opted for a more realistic approach.
