It may have been hit with a bit of WB's high frequency filtering like with BR 2049 that they think helps with compression where the Sony version didn't have that extra filter applied and therefore retains a bit more nth degree detail.
I generally defer to better informed posters and the fact the Geoff saw the same similarities to the Inception UHD that I was seeing (but was unable to articulate due to being a rank amateur in these matters) makes me confident that I wasn't just going into Goonies with unrealistic expectations. But no, it's never a waxy mess like Batman Begins and certainly not an unmitigated disaster like T2. And I do hope the treatment given to this release was a one-off and not a reaction to the outcry from some corners to the the excellent Gremlins UHD.

I bought the three-pack last year some time because it was cheap and I've already retired two discs without even having watched any of the blu-rays yet.

"But, darling, it's just a replacement for the blu-ray so it doesn't actually take up more space!"

The DNR on this is a little bit too much for me especially after watching some films with heavy film grain since last week. Just one more layer of grain would have resulted in a more organic picture.

Yeah, this one has too much DNR. I also think the colors aren't too impressive - kinda flat looking, like it lacks HDR/WCG.

Kind of agree on the DNR (I would say it feels like Forrest Gump sometimes in the sense it doesn't make things look too waxy but it's there) but I had no major issues with HDR/WCG. All this needed was an extra layer of grain.

I haven't been keeping up with this thread. Why did you need replacement discs? I haven't bought the movie yet.

The disc in the HMV Cine Edition had a brief audio error around the hour mark. It didn't affect Zavvi's steelbook release

Must be player related then as it appeared only the hmv version was affected.

Watched this today. Not too crazy about the movie but it was nice overall. No issues with the picture on my end. Audio feels dated by modern standards but I like the natural colors and it could've had better contrast in few scenes but really no issues with resolution. Seems like the not enough grain complaints are more common lately on this forum. On my end grain resolves better on 4K discs so I don't expect to see more of it comparing to regular blu-rays but what do I know.

My disc started freezing about 42 minutes in. I have so many 4Ks that freeze. So annoying.

My disc (regular US-edition) started freezing around 58 minutes. I have cleaned it thoroughly, but no improvement. I also noticed that there are some very small scratches (already there upon opening) on the disc. Not sure if they are the cause.

getting the impression WB rushed this out to make the anniversary. That explains the average transfer and no Atmos

Nah. Warners don't always Atmos-ise their catalogue stuff, and the transfer is fine. If anything it's had a bit too much "care" put into it with the DNR, people never realise that it's actually more work to slather stuff with processing than to just leave it alone.

The disc master may have been done a while back, hence the average effort and no Atmos.
