The Thin Red Line - 5/5

Fantastic film.

About 45 minutes or so into it, I still wasn't sure how I felt about it. The same thing happened to me with 2001: ASO and Days of Heaven and the WOW hit me at the end. Well the WOW hit me about half way through the film. I rarely watch my favorite films more than once or twice a year, but I almost restarted this as soon as it ended. I can't wait to watch it again! It's late so here's a few random thoughts...

Malick starts with showing us a tribal culture - displaying their peaceful, natural, simple way of life. Then we're introduced to the American military as they're being sent off to war. Malick showcases the violent, ugly nature of war intermingled with beautiful shots of nature. There were a couple of shots that stood out for me, but the one I can recall right now was after a soldier burned a hooch, the camera zooms in on a single flower, alone in front of the burning structure. Later on, we witness fighting among the tribal peoples and human skulls visible on shelves in their huts. He shows us how peaceful, yet "savage" they are as well, and that is what's inherently natural for us. We obviously know that the peoples of modern society are very civilized and don't keep skulls in their house, however our skirmishes yield a thousand times more casualties and destruction.

The narration, themes, performances, absolutely stunning cinematography and the realistic, in your face combat sequences all make for one of the best films I've ever seen and one of the finest blu's I've had the pleasure of viewing. I can't wait for Barnes and Noble's Criterion sale in November!!

If you can, definitely wait to watch it on your setup at home! The soundtrack alone is worth it, but the film is too beautiful to be properly viewed on a smaller monitor

Event Horizon

Director: Paul Anderson
Writer: Philip Eisner
Mains: Laurence Fishburne, Sam Neill, Kathleen Quinlan

Average Sci Fi Thiller

First off i would like to state that this isnt a bash just my opinion on the movie. I thought the ideal was pretty cool and the visuals were amazing. Especially for a movie this darn old. Acting was pretty average and direction, basically everything. I dont know if me seeing movies like "Sunshine" or "Pandorum" have an affect on the overall rating of this movie. I just seem to like those movies a bit more. I also felt like this movie had allot of holes in the plot, maybe they rushed it being that its only 93 mins. Overall i thought the movie was ok and worth a rental.

Rent It First

This one is one of my favorites, and it certainly creeped me out when I first saw it, but I can understand it being seen as average or dull. Certainly doesn't compare to "Sunshine."

If only the "Doom" movie had this same production style/design...

This will sound really odd, but.... Scarlett bugged me in this flick because she was so uncoordinated. She couldnt pull off any of the moves and looked clumsy as hell. She walks like a truck when she wears high heels and that annoys the hell out of me. There was a scene at Tonys house where she was standing still and then "bursts" away, quickly making a turn at the hall entrance and she damn near tripped. I was surprised they didnt use a different take or edit it out.

Yeah, I'm weird.

there's not meant to be an explanation about the apocalypse. the movie actually shows more than the book does, in that you see a flash of light and hear rumbling. not so in the book. that was mccarthy's point--the end does not need an explanation bc it's still the end. it's what we do in that position that matters. it's a similar line of thinking to jose saramago's novels (RIP)

they were heading to the ocean bc water is representative of life and has been as far back as is recorded. ppl and animals need water to survive and it's ingrained in us.

[QUOTE=Diesel;3807311]Very long post, so most of it will be under spoiler tags.

[Show spoiler]
He has an issue with the family and Stark.

The family - they stole his father's work in his eyes and had him pretty much kicked back to Russia to die a slow unknown death while he should have been just as praised as Howard Stark in Ivan's mind.

Stark - He is parading the technology that "he created" around for all to see. He wants vengeance for his father because of this.

I just answered that one.

He built one with Hammer's resources because he's a genius almost on Stark's level.

So they can use it and have better ones than other countries will make.

Does having nuclear weapons stop others from using them on us?

Probably.

Howard wanted too much money. He was canned for good reason.
And he didn't do good enough with the role, he doesn't have Stark screen time but he's still an important part of Tony's story.

[quote]the opening party / expo? pointless.
Quote:

It's about who Tony Stark is. The opening of the film fit him very much. Far from pointless.

He had a car in the event, thus he was there. Everyone knew he had a car in the event. Vanko got the ticket to be there and attacked Tony's car, he didn't know Tony was IN the car when he made the arrangements to go there because Tony wasn't going to be in it. It was a last minute decision that played into Vanko's hand.

I couldn't disagree with that more actually.

This scientist just built his suit a few days ago, how long do you expect him to last against a guy who's had it for just under a year and an army colonel with combat training armed with his own kick *** suit?

But I would also have liked to see it last a little longer...as you'll see in a second.

I feel the polar opposite of the film.

Here's something that may be of interest to a thinker like you. Focus on the use of water in films. For example, take Baz Luhrhmann's Romeo + Juliet. He purposely uses water throughout the entire film to represent life and rebirth. When Romeo first sees Juliet, it's through the fish tank. Romeo falls in a pool. Another character whom I won't name dies and falls into water. Movies are riddled with blatant as well as obscure references to water because it's quite literally one of the top 2-3 most important symbols since language (pictoral then written) was developed (the other being the sun, and another being the earth).
Shall we go deeper yet?

In Walkabout, they swim in water, that rests on dirt, bathed by the sun, naked.

Pretty heavy stuff eh?

Now I realize just how deep that film really is. It represents the meaning of all that is, ever was, and will ever be.

Buried

The less you know the better, so I'll keep it as brief notes.
  • It is just Ryan Reynolds in a box for 90 mins
  • It's nail-biting and heart pounding
  • Ryan Reynolds is superb in it
  • Only problem is that it does have a problem with pacing, adding unnecassry scenes to drag out the film
  • I want to see if anyone else cataches
    [Show spoiler]the foreshadowning
  • The dark story of what if the Green Latern movie sucks
  • watch it, NOW

9.5/10

Up in the Air

finally got around to seeing this. and while i really enjoyed it, i'm glad i didn't buy it because i'd probably only watch it every so often. and while George Clooney plays a terrific character that is essential me, and of course that means i could connect with him, everyone else i didn't really care when they were on screen.

very original as Clooney plays Ryan Bingham, a corporate downsizer who flies from city to city laying people off from their jobs because, as Ryan puts it, their bosses are "p*ssies who don't have the stones to do it themselves" and because of this, he lives alone, quietly, comfortably and with no ambition or need to get married and / or have kids. i loved, loved, LOVED when he was discussing marriage and kids with Natalie and how he wanted nothing to do with those things. things that most people one day want, but he does not. i feel the exact same way, and that made me smile quite a bit.

the relationship Bingham builds with Alex (Vera Farmiga) is well crafted and built on the exact same things: wealth, and essentially greed. they both are prime club members in an assortment of different companies most common folk have never even heard of, and that's where the attraction lies for these two characters.

while i never really had any issues with the film, i wasn't sucked into it like i wanted to be. and again, aside from Clooney, i didn't care to learn about other characters. i just wanted to continue to see Ryan living his life the way he should - in hotels, airplanes, and rental cars. and i enjoyed the hell out of the ending. most films have the character learn something or change... i HATE that, especially when i agree with the character. so i was perfectly content with the ending of the film.

4/5
