Classic TN sports team... always letting us down.

Their defense looked like UT's tonight.

Great Game

Heartbreaking way to end it for Vandy. Jordan Matthews played his heart out.

College football is back!

I did enjoy seeing Towson beat up on UConn and Fresno St hold off Rutgers for the win. Those early season upsets are great - except when it happens to us

Best game of the night can't be between 2 teams that suck.

Towson is a good team and is ranked #11 in the FCS polls but this is still a surprise. UConn wasn't supposed to great but they weren't expected to be that bad. CBS Sports had them 5th in the AAC, but that's not saying a lot considering who's in the AAC.

Forget that, I'm closing on the house at 10 this morning and have the satellite installer coming at 12:30. I didn't want to miss tonight's North Dakota State-Kansas State game on Fox Sports 1. North Dakota State is the two-time defending FCS champion and has won their last 3 games against FBS teams, but none of them were even close to as good as Kansas State. I think North Dakota State could make this a game though, especially with it being the first game of the year where depth isn't as much of an issue as it is later in the year when injuries start to affect teams.

Anyone else think Clowney's conditioning seemed a little lackluster last night? For someone that wants to be in the discussion for the #1 pick in next year's draft, he needs to pick it up. I'm eager for Miami's first game tonight. It should be a cupcake, but we can't be looking ahead to the Gators next week. Let's take care of business tonight first.

It's All About The U, baby!!!

The hype on Clowney is just crazy right now. He's a great player but if you watch him he takes plays off all the time.

2012 stats, both in 12 games

Player A:
64 Tackles, 40 Solo Tackles, 13 Sacks, 4 Pass Defends

Player B:
54 Tackles, 40 Solo Tackles, 13 Sacks, 2 Pass Defends

Can anyone explain to me why one of these guys is viewed as the best defensive player in college football, and a potential Heisman candidate, and the other gets almost no press?

*EDIT* Note, I'm not so much arguing for Clowney to be brought down, as much as I really wonder why everybody ignores the other guy. Is there something I'm missing?

That depends. Which is the "non-Clowney"? Does this other person play against SEC competition or some weaker conference? There are other factors involved that pure numbers.

I'm worried Clowney is going to be a victim of his own success. This year teams will send atleast 2 and maybe 3 to block him. His presence on the field will disrupt a offense, but there's no stat for hurrying the QB or forcing him out of the pocket.

He looked gassed last night but a few other players did too. He's going to be center-stage again going up against UGA next week so hopefully he has a better game.

Factors like the fact that the SEC is all about defenses and quite frequently the offenses they play aren't that overwhelmingly good?

I knew someone would immediately pull the SEC-card.

The very fact that you can't even name the player who had 13 sacks in the PAC-12 (arguably the second best conference last year, 3rd at worst), speaks volumes.

Show me random stats with no indication about who they are and I wouldn't be able to name the person either.

Speaks volumes, yes. I live on the east coast. I don't see the west coast teams play as frequently. So I'm supposed to know every player who puts up good numbers in a west coast conference? If stats were all that mattered in evaluating NFL prospects Tim Tebow would be a top-tier NFL QB. But college stats essentially don't matter. And yes, I pulled the SEC card because it's the best conference. Has been for over a half decade.

If I had posted 40 solo tackles and 13 sacks I'd bet you have no problem naming Clowney. Without any indication of who he is.

No.... because I have no clue what Clowney's actual numbers are. I really don't know what stats are considered good or not in the NCAA, especially when there are guys in no-name schools putting the guys in the big name schools to shame.

You aren't supposed to know them. But why aren't you ever even hearing about them?

FWIW he's deemed too short for the NFL, but that's irrelevant for college football (as you hear every year when it comes to the Heisman.)

Maybe the only reason you hear about Clowney so much is because of his NFL-pedigree.

Regardless, the PAC-12 player is Will Sutton from Arizona State.

I couldn't have even told you that Jeremiah Attaochu had 44 solo tackles and 10 sacks, and he plays for the team I cheer for.

Also, you hear about Clowney because he was a sophomore (junior now). Usually, defensive linemen get better through their time in college, which would suggest he'll be even better in his 3rd year.

And Clowney was the #1 overall nationally ranked player of his high school class. We was well known coming out of HS. That name recognition carries over to college.

When it comes to defensive stats this isn't true. They are almost entirely from the big schools. Fair enough if you didn't know this though, as you are correct for most stats.
