Not a dumb question at all - I had no idea either - and I'm scary smart

The Clone Wars: Season 1 was released in a digibook. While nice, it doesn't fit well together with the regular BD case for the pilot movie. It's only a 3 disc set, and I just wished they would have made it a 4-disc case with an empty slot so that you could add the movie disc to the case.

If your Walmart has completed its BD reset this month, then you'll be able to find The Matrix non-digibook version. I saw a few copies today in the $15 BD section.

FYI...

I picked up a copy of the steenbok today at Best Buy for $7.

I’ve always heard how the transfer for this film was one of the great, early reference-quality transfers.

Does it still hold up today, in the UHD era?

...or are the angry, pitchfork-wielding mobs already rioting over demands for a 4K remaster?

It’s a good transfer. However, the color timing is different from the theatrical release. And luckily we are getting a 4K release in a month. Just in time for my new 4K home theater to be finished up!

Assuming you're talking about the blu-ray, is the color timing on the DVD the same as the theatrical release?

The original DVD had the theatrical color timing, but the re-release changed it to the green we now see on the BD too.

Interesting. So the movie never had that green tint to begin with?

First time I saw this was a bootleg screener on vhs. Sure it wasn't the finished version, but it also didn't have the green tint.

Interesting. I wonder who's idea it was to add the green tint. I actually liked the idea, in order to distinguish the Matrix from the real world.

Anyone who can't distinguish the Matrix from the real world without added green tint simply isn't paying attention to the basic premise of the plot AT ALL.

At some point the Wachowskis decided that they want to thematically color the 2 realms. Matrix = Green, Real world = Blue. IIRC this is specifically mentioned in the extras on the Matrix digibook edition blu. Unlike some of the folks here, I don't remember how it was theatrically (and whether the early DVD's were faithful to that scheme).

I don't recall there being a blue tint to the real world in the Blu-Ray. I remember it as simply being normal, as it should be. I'll have to play it and have another look. Remember also that tungsten film or normal blue filtration to counteract tungsten lighting could be giving that effect, and not that it was intentionally tinted blue for it's own sake.

I did look at the capsaholic comparison and the difference between the non-tinted DVD and the Blu-Ray is stark. It would be interesting to view that DVD version. The contrast is better in that version, where it is not overdone like in the Blu-Ray with it's much darker and crushed shadows and plenty of blown highlights.

Great, it looks like I may now be buying that DVD version and getting angry about the Blu-Ray I have, and not because of the tint but because of the contrast difference.

Edit: I'm looking at the Blu-Ray version now and the real world is not tinted at all. The blue you see is some scene elements and simply the look of film once corrected for tungsten lighting. In other words the typical blue we have always associated with night time scenes of movies from the past. Digital cameras also produce that same blue once tungsten lighting is corrected for. Of course it can be digitally removed in software to produce what our eyes see but that blue look is now a tradition.
