And the fact that the classic, most heralded version of The Maltese Falcon (1941 with Humphrey Bogart) was the 3rd movie version of that novel in less than 10 years.

Michael Mann's "Heat" is a superior remake of a 1989 TV pilot (also written and directed by Mann) called "L.A. Takedown"

I agree with Max Payne. I would also like a G.I Joe remake. Although I did enjoy recent one they can make a way better G.I Joe movie.

I'm just thinking out loud but..... after 90 years of movies, wouldn't it be pretty difficult these days to come up with completely original ideas?
I mean, there's only so many stories to tell. As long as the film has good direction, acting, and a new twist to the "old idea" I think that's a pretty
reasonable expectation.
Don't get me wrong-- there are still new concepts and ideas waiting to be made, I just don't think it should be an expectation with all new releases...

Movies have been around over 110 years, and yeah, hardly anything is entirely "new" anymore. Before movies, look how long books/stories have been around... it's just not feasible to think that every movie, or even most movies, will have an original idea. I get a laugh because people on these boards have been nitpicking Avatar for having a weak story and dialogue — yet they own movies like The Punisher and Shoot Em Up, among others, which have no story and awful dialogue. Seems hypocritical to me, and only applies when people want to find something to complain about.

Writers like Charlie Kaufman try to do something different and original, and while a small sum of people get into what he's doing, the vast majority don't — simple because it's TOO original for mainstream tastes. People LIKE seeing familiar stories over and over. They like the comfort of knowing that the guy and girl will end up together, and I think people enjoy when they can figure out what will happen next, because it makes the average Joe feel smarter. Avatar is a great example — its a classic hero story, with very archetypal characters that have been around since Greek mythology. As a story, it doesn't alienate audiences or try to be too highbrow. It keeps itself simple, yet has all the necessary story beats to please all age groups worldwide. Is it original? It has original ideas in it, but the execution is pretty standard. Does it hurt the film IMO? Not at all.
