Well if Criterion does re-release it,I hope it comes with some new stuff along with everything from the previous 2 disc dvd.

If you have the Criterion release and cannot wait for their blu, check as maybe you might be able to get a used copy of the US blu, it sure is a great blu ray.

Well I had myself convinced I didn't want to buy the blu criterion release as I have the SD criterion, but after reading this thread it has stoked the flames and I think I may need to pick up the Criterion release when it comes out, if it gets positive reviews on quality I think that will be the really trigger for me.

Anyone who likes this movie or just Hunter S. Thompson should watch Breakfast with Hunter to see him torment Alex Cox and Tod Davies when they go to his house to discuss the script for Fear and Loathing.

It appears that it's out of print and used copies don't seem to be readily available.

Rats, just bought the Uni version last month! Oh well, won't mind having two blu's of a Terry Gilliam classic. Plus the extras that are on the Uni disc are not on the Criterion.

Hopefully these Uni films will get the Criterion treament in the future:

The Deleted Scenes are on both the Universal and the Criterion. So really, the only extra on the Universal that won't be on the Criterion is the 11-minute EPK, which isn't all that great, to begin with. You might wanna trade up when the Criterion comes out. I haven't bought the Universal, as I've been hoping Criterion would bring their fantastic F&L package to BD...but if I had bought the Universal, I'd be getting rid of it come April.

And I'm betting we'll see Brazil and Traffic before too long. Hopefully, with the others soon to follow.

Are they going to do a complete remaster for better sound and audio? I bought the Uni version day one. I'm a huge fan of this movie just want to make sure it will be worth the double dip.

It's Criterion who is very well known for amazing restorations of films, plus it should be loaded down with extras.

I can't wait for the review on this site, but I can pretty much guarantee that the Criterion will be much better.

They don't just crank the DNR and then add Edge Enhancement like some, they lovingly go through and remove specks and debris, and use the original source audio to remove any pops or distortion etc.

Quoted for truth. I've never encountered a Criterion BD transfer yet that fell short of excellence. I wondered, as they started releasing BD editions, if there would be an adjustment period, as there was when they moved from Laser to DVD, where the early releases weren't so hot. But they began with excellence on the new format, and have maintained a remarkable consistency with their releases. Indeed, every Criterion review here at Blu-ray.com has a PQ rating of at least 4/5, with most garnering either a 4.5 or 5.

With Fear & Loathing being a favorite film of mine, and Criterion's DVD being the definitive SD package, this has jumped to the top of my "Most Anticipated" list, right along with Sony's Taxi Driver (April's gonna be one hell of a month). I have no doubt whatsoever that Criterion will give Fear & Loathing the transfer it deserves.

Glad I put off buying the Universal...just as I'm glad I never picked up Sony's Memento. Sometimes, it pays to trust your gut.

As a big Hunter Thompson fan, I'd certainly recommend them. But I would add that they are for the die-hard fan rather then a causal. Also be aware that When I Die and Free Lisl contain less Hunter footage as the former covers his funeral and the latter a case he was interested in. Having said that, if you're a fan, I highly recommend them. I've just ordered Breakfast with Hunter 2 to join the rest on the shelf. The Criterion blu-ray will also be picked up, even though I own the Criterion SD I would warrent it as one of those rare instances worthy of the upgrade. Can't wait!

The Criterion looks more natural and is not as bright, but the Universal is still not bad at all. Obviously, the extras on the Criterion and plantiful. Since I own the Universal Blu and the Criterion DVD set, I still don't know if I'll triple dip though.

I bought it twice on DVD, once already on Blu and I WILL be buying the Criterion version and I cannot wait for all the bonus features

I didn't get the Universal BD because I already had the Criterion DVD. I will double dip when this Criterion BD comes out though.
