I couldn't disagree more. In the case of North by Northwest, I've seen it several times, and it's one of my all time favorites. I've only seen The Dark Knight once, and that was enough. It seems choppy and incomplete, even though it clocks in at a much longer time than the average film.

In fact, I'd say I much prefer older films to those of today. Except for a few exceptions here and there, most movies today are either terrible or mediocre. The big special effects movies are the biggest sinners in this regard. I'd rather watch a movie from the 40's or 70's where plot and characterization is important, and where they were aimed at adults rather than tweens.

I would agree that North by Northwest is better than most contemporary movies.

During the dinner scene on the train, I was surprised at how openly they discussed sex. I am not bothered by that, just seemed provocative for 1959.

Typical (good) Hitchcock obsession with heights and vertical photography and some tight close-ups.

That Frank Lloyd Wright (assumed) house in South Dakota was gorgeous.

More relating to the time than the actual film, I was amused to see wealthy people in suits running around looking for "pay phones".

Was I the only one cracking up at the "not so subtle" train-slamming-full-steam-into-the-tunnel at the end?

The dinner scene on the train intrigued me too. I did not expect that kind of conversation in a movie from 50 years ago.

Ive never liked North by Northwest and really cant see the fuss. A great Hitchcock film? Give me Vertigo or Rear Window any day!

Exactly. Its like a Bond film but nowhere near as good for me. It probably inspired the Bond films to some degree though. I just found it ridiculous on my last watch...I needed to watch Rear Window shortly after to reaffirm my faith in Hitchcock!
