From the layout, it looks like any combination of up to 3 singers and up to 4 of any of the other instruments (bass, guitar, drums, keyboard) in any combination.

All of the non-vocal instruments use the same sort of scrolling highway, so there's enough real estate on-screen to accommodate that many at least.

yeah that's what i meant, cause the other 3 would be singing harmonies.

First time in my life am I so excited for a Rock Band game. I finally get to be serious with Rock Band for the first time. I am quite excited that you get to use real instruments for the game.
In the past, you know that feeling ... that you know how to play the songs in real life yet you can't beat the song even on hard?

though I am worried about the keys. It doesn't even have two ****ing octaves.

question, I know that you can use a midi keyboard to play but can you also use a real guitar?

Niiiiiice!!! Though I'm still wondering, can you make your lead singer character also play an instrument or is he still only limited to holding the mic? The reason I ask is because I'm all about wanting to accurately create bands and, for example, if I wanted to create Metallica, I would want to make Hetfield be able to do the vocals AND play his guitar.

Also, I wonder how much freedom it gives guitar players for improvisation? Like maybe when you go into solo mode, does it gives you a chance to sort of do your own thing or if you have to strictly follow the notes on screen?

I have yet to be able to platinum even one of the music games, because all of them have something that's just ridiculously hard, and you need to be (or know someone) proficient in every instrument.

In Rock Band 2 it was those drum trainer trophies.

Also, there's those Endless Setlist trophies, and "The Bladder Of Steel" one.

It sounds like the fun factor has gone way down. Real instruments?! That'll be so hard

At least the gameplay has been drastically improved, and that you can actually learn something from a game. Harmonix is definitely pushing the envelope for Rock Band 3.

I can see this going either way.

On one hand, it's kind of cool that the game can be an interactive training device for learning instruments.

On the other hand, I'm still skeptical that's the case, and that the only way to actually learn an instrument is to go pick up a real one.

On one hand, you have the likely majority of people who don't care about the pro mode/instruments.

On the other hand, there is this minority of people who want the pro mode... but why not just start playing an instrument?

As for me, the pro-mode on guitar seems like it could be fun, but the rest I can do without. Pro-mode on keyboard will get you nowhere past what a 5 year old can do after 2 weeks of lessons (since it's pretty much right hand only), and drums are too variable.

My pal will be on Drums in Pro mode, complete with cymbols. I will be on Keys Pro, but I'm not thinking I'll be getting the Pro guitars. WAY too many notes and I forsee it being harder to read than fun to play. I hate that I can't get the Vocal trophies because I don't have enough friends that would even be willing to do a harmony.

Interesting note: I'm thinking the Vocal interface from GD:RB is the upgraded one from RB3 because it is better at reading my voice. I could do songs on Expert with the GD disk in that I couldn't do as DLC on RB2.

agreed. The old gameplay was a mere button pressing games. Half the time, the button movements do not translate to the actual difference in pitch. You know what I'm saying. The buttons are almost just arbitrarily chosen to give the players a false sense that they are playing along the strings. The reason is obviously that they only have 5 (correct me if I'm wrong, I have only played it once) buttons.

Now, it all depends on how involved a player wants to get. You can play the 5 buttons or choose to buy the real looking things. I am quite excited about this. Not only did I dislike the 5 buttons, I also hated the pick-button.
Like racing game, you can choose to use a regular controller or purchase a wheel for a more realistic experience.

I would say that the pro mode would be a welcome change for those who actually know how to play the instrument and suck at playing the plastic controllers. For me, I basically gave up playing RB with my friends because they mocked me for failing songs at hard or expert level..... the very songs I learned how to play on the real thing years ago when I started playing guitar.
Boy, was that feeling sour.
