I wonder if this is classified as secondary audio in my BD player settings? Never knew what secondary audio was!

Just tested it on a Region A locked player and it works perfectly. So AB for sure.

Sony don't mind unlocked when it damages other rights' holders.

All the extras seem to have English, Italian & Spanish subs.

Hey,

I've never seen the film (yes shame on me ) and I'd like to know if you'd consider the "wrong" aspect ratio as a complete dealbreaker, as I'm thinking about ordering this one at the moment.

Had you asked me that after I watched a few scenes in 16:9 I'd say yes. Had you asked me that after my watching the film in 4:3 and then 16:9 I'd say -it's up to you! I honestly think they've done a great job of the 16:9 pan and scan (that's what it is folks) and I reckon if it doesn't matter to you and you don't care then it doesn't matter. I'm used to the 4:3 so I prefer that.

From my post on the Dedicated Slipcover thread.

Best bet is to do what I did, buy both. You then have all bases covered and will sleep better for owning everything

Makes perfect sense

I have the same problem. Maybe one could get a new copy?

Okay! Worked it out! It was the "Secondary Audio Output" - I had it switched to on and it does definitely work.
Also, I hear that you need to let the player do the decoding and send as PCM to the receiver.

Could you explain further for the technically illiterate?

I believe it's the same exact transfer. The only problem with the UK version is that it only includes the widescreen version, not the 1.33:1 original.

Technically no because it's the same transfer but having said that there's something very important to consider. Because the OAR was the 1.33:1 and it's been cropped to get to 1.85:1 I found that the grain pattern became far more aggressive on the 1.85:1 due to the 16mm film stock used. It's a grain heavy film to begin with but the cropping and "zooming" (for want of a better word) just means that those grain particles have a larger presence in the 1.85:1 option. For that reason I'd recommend the US release if you have the capability to play it.

Or just sit further away from the TV.

There's lots of grain and it's not really better/worse in 4:3 or 16:9. It might -literally- be larger artefacts but does that make it worse? No, just bigger.

It's 16mm I'd expect nothing different.

Sit further back.

Any word on special editions for Evil Dead II and 3? That would seriously kick ass!

Absolutely it makes it worse. 16mm naturally has a dense grain structure. By cropping the film so that less of the frame is visible it has the effect of enlarging the grain. You may claim it doesn't make it worse but it makes it far more prominent and it also results in by-products of the cropping process. It has the effect of softening the picture as less of the frame is utilised to "fill" your display whether it be a TV or a projector. The edges will appear slightly less defined due to this. At larger display sizes it will become far more obvious.

I'm not saying it looks bad but saying that it doesn't look any different is in my opinion incorrect. If you can only yield so much information from the original source then any cropping will naturally remove some image area, leaving the resulting image area magnified and any grain and other factors like slightly out of focus shots will be more prominent.

As for your advice to "sit further back", I hope you're joking. Expecting someone to change their viewing distance to minimise the effect of a cropped presentation is just outright unusual. Viewing distance should be directly related to the size of your screen and not used to compensate for any other factors.

As you can see from the cap below detailing a portion of a visible area the 1.85:1 version (left) has a far more visible grain structure as opposed to the 1.33:1 presentation (right) which shows as a much finer veneer of grain.

[Show spoiler]
