Edgar Wright Talks ANT-MAN on the Red Carpet of the MTV Movie Awards

Quote:
Last night, I got a chance to speak with writer/director Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz) on the red carpet for the MTV Movie Awards where Wright debuted new footage from his upcoming film Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. I was able to talk to Wright about his Scott Pilgrim reshoots/pickups, the future of his Blood and Ice Cream trilogy (the first two parts are Shaun and Hot Fuzz) with Simon Pegg and his upcoming Los Angeles Film Festival. I also learned that with all his efforts focused Pilgrim, Wright hasn’t begun to think about casting for Ant-Man
Quote:
WRIGHT: Well just, you know, like the, sort of, it’s like the icing on the cake. I’ve done it on both films I’ve…all three films I’ve done, and usually its like if you get an opportunity to kind of, like, sort of jazz up a couple of bits, its an opportunity to be taken.

I know you haven’t thought too much about Ant-Man but what kind of actor are you looking for to play the role?

WRIGHT: I haven’t thought too much about it.

Do you want an unknown or a big name actor or a medium name actor?

WRIGHT: I don’t know. (laughs)

Any truth to Josh Holloway rumors?
So we at least know that Edgar isn't sure yet.

I would like him to go with an unknown.

What do you think?

Edgar Wright Says Ant-Man Wouldn't Fit With The Avengers

Quote:
Soon to be director Edgar Wright talks with 'Cinema Blend on the status of Ant-Man including that it would be an origin film, not being able to fit in Marvel's upcoming Avengers movie.

The lack of Ant-Man had been announced by director Joss Whedon a few hours before the San Diego Comic-Con Panel that assembled The Avengers cast on stage. And apparently Edgar Wright's script for Ant-Man's solo film may explain why the mini Avenger won't make it The Avengers debut, though he was key component to team in the comics. . Speaking with Cinema Blend, Wright says....
Quote:

"I talked to Kevin Feige about that a while back where we just discussed about whether he would be in The Avengers. The thing is, the script that I’ve written, you know, whether it’s next or not I don’t know, the chronology of it or the way it works wouldn’t really fit in with what they do. And my film is very much an introduction to that character, and so it wasn’t something where it felt right to introduce him in that film. Maybe if I do the solo Ant-Man film and maybe there’s a later Avengers then they could draft him in later. But it didn’t work with the kind of the angle that we were going to do with the origin that I’d written."
So it seems Marvel Studios is officially allowing Wright to go the right direction, and get Ant-Man on the big screen alone, before assembling with Earth's Mightiest Heroes in 2012. Time will only tell as The Avengers Assembles on May 4, 2012. And Ant-Man debuts on the big screen sometime after.

Does it not fit because the script is a blend of action AND comedy?

My guess is there's background to the character that wouldn't fit into him being in the Avengers is all (Movies).

Probably. I think they could set him up to be a member of S.H.I.E.L.D. and works with the Avengers in the Avenger films like the rest of S.H.I.E.L.D. does.

Maybe Fury can appear in the Ant-Man film, near the end, something like in Iron Man. There he would meet Janet (Wasp) if they don't introduce her in his solo film

Can Ant-Man grow large and small? Or is that Atom-man? Am I confusing superheroes?

My guess is, Edgar started before the Avenger Movie Initiative, tried to turn it into a tongue-in-cheek comedy (in keeping with Marvel showing him Stan's old 90's memos), discovered that Marvel was wondering about fitting Hank into the group movie and that it probably shouldn't have been a "Shaun of the Superheroes" comedy after all, and is now facing the prospect of his movie living or dying on its own without the group-movie pedigree.

Which, if so, is another excuse to can the solo movie and just put H&J in the group movie without explanation after all.

Director Edgar Wright has finally given just a little insight into where his version of Ant-Man will be headed on screen.

Quote:
Edgar Wright has been working the promotion circuit very hard promoting Scott Pilgrim Vs The World. Everywhere he goes, the subject of Ant-Man, one of Marvel's next movies after Avengers, comes up. Wright is usually good as keeping the answers light and repeating the same mantra at every interview. Vanity Fair recently did a very nice interview with him focusing on Scott Pilgrim and video games but they were able to get a few new nuggets of info on Wright's future adaptation. Here is an excerpt from that interview:

Vanity Fair: You’ve been working on the comic book adaptation for a while. Is it ever actually going to happen?

Edgar Wright: I hope so, yeah. I’ve written a script, and once Scott Pilgrim is done I’m going to work on a second draft. It’s something I’ve been passionate about for awhile.

VF:Yeah, but ... Ant Man? Seriously? Isn’t he like Aqua Man with lower self-esteem?

EW:Not at all! I had a copy of the Tales to Astonish comic from the early 60s, which has his origin story. And I’ve been a fan ever since. I think it’s a really interesting high-concept idea.

VF:You’re an amazing director, Edgar, but I don’t know how this is going to work. I mean… Ant Man? The guy who becomes an ant? Isn’t that like trying to stop a mob boss with a box full of kittens?

EW:I know there’s a big stigma attached to it, mostly because every movie about shrinking has been about people in peril. I think it’d be great to do a shrinking film about a bad-ass secret agent.

VF:Okay, I see what you mean. I was thinking along the lines of Honey I Shrunk The Kids.

EW:Even something like The Incredible Shrinking Man, which is a fantastic film, is about a guy in trouble. But this is going to be nothing like that. It’s essentially a high-tech spy heist film with somebody with a very particular power.

VF:The awesome power ... of an ant!

EW:Trust me, it’ll be much cooler than you think.

The interviewer clearly thought he was on an agenda to go for camp-kitsch Cartoon Network-slash-SNL jokes about Pointless Superfriends Movies, but just shows to go ya:
It takes a real jerk to show just how dedicated a real mad-genius is to his pursuit...Thanks to Cheap-Gag Boy's attempt at everybody else's rimshots ("C'monnn, can't we do ONE joke?...I gotta get some headline, y'know! "), I take back my earlier post, and now have that much more confidence that Wright actually does know what he's doing in the comic-canon department, which I sure didn't before. Hey, they laughed at Jon Favreau...

I got the impression that the 'interviewer' is really bad at interviewing by mocking the person being interviewed.

Nice little insight into what the film might be like. I am actually really looking forward to this. I hope the film reaches the potential that Stan Lee thinks the character has.

You can hear the interviewer visibly frustrated that Wright isn't "playing along" with the mainstream too-many-superhero-movie joke, and taking his movie seriously:
"No, no, no!--It's supposed to be a Cartoon Network Superfriends/Aquaman joke! Quit doing a REAL movie!...Let's try it again: 'Okay, so he talks to insects, is that like talking to fish? Or does he turn into ice ladders?'"

It's going to be hard wiping away the last smug-generation's demons, but that's why they're yesterday's.

I have to admit, I just wasn't sure where they would go with the character, but Wright has me interested.

I think they had been talking about Scott Pilgrim, so in that text, maybe they were already joking with each other

Default Edgar Wright's Ant-Man

NOTE: I am not in anyway reporting this as fact. I thought I would share this email that I have been pushing back posting for close to a month just to see what your opinions were on the possibility of these casting choices.

About two weeks back I received an email from an anonymous scooper going by the name of Mister Orange(Reservoir Dogs?) claiming to be close to the production of Edgar Wright's adaption of the comic character Ant-Man. In another email unfortunately and accidentally deleted by me, Mister Orange goes on to say he is concept artist on the film and did not answer any more of my questions do to fear of saying too much.

Hi Mister Orange here, I am close to the production of director Edgar Wright's Ant-Man movie. Now as you may have heard it was jokingly reported by The Avengers director Joss Whedon that star of his show Firefly, Actor Nathan Fillion would be Ant-Man. But I have news on the contrary, In fact another Firefly star Alan Tudyk is not only locked in for a solo film for the character, but will briefly appear in The Avengers as the character's scientist counter part Hank Pym Along with wife and fellow super hero Janet Van Dyne(both whose transformation into Ant-Man and Wasp will be shown as the after the credits scene in The Avengers). Both characters will be in the process of creating Ultron(who is set up for the villein role in the solo film). The solo film will start filming directly after The Avengers with a cameo from Wonder Man, A role that is actually being largely considered for Fillion.

Now again I will stress that I am not reporting this as fact as much as I would love it to be. The reason I actually took the leap of faith and posted this was due to the fact that it very well could be possible. Aside from the fact that this just an email with no proof to back it up it still very much falls into the realm of reality. The Avengers will hit theaters with or without Ant-Man or Tudyk May 4, 2012. The solo film Ant-Man has no release or an official start date. Confirm, debunk, or comment below.

Hmmm...interesting
