So really from the word go it was never going to be a close adpatation of the book.

Also, am I the only one who thinks The Lost World is just way too different from the first film?
I mean, I enjoy it and I think it's a very good film, but I feel that it looses everything that made the original so great and enjoyable in the first place, and there also too many new characters that it doesn't always feel like a sequel, but more of a standalone film.
I'm glad it was different. The plot (people going to an island filled with dinosaurs) is pretty similar to the first movie, so to have such a completely different atmosphere really made the sequel to not be a rehash of the first. That's also why most people seem to hate/dislike it.
Anyway, Jurassic Park was a childhood favorite of mine, and The Lost World was one of the first DVDs I bought (and actually still own). The third one wasn't very good, but if Universal releases an anthology box with additional extras, I'll buy it. Providing, of course, that Universal doesn't screw up anything (DNR, etc.).

I dont see a point in even looking at broadcasted HD screens...
Everyone knows that this will have a new master done for it so looking at TV screes is just useless as the final product may look outstanding.

We hope they have a new master done, otherwise it's the master used for the DVD.

I look at these shots for HDTV and I wonder if I'll ever take the plunge and upgrade.

I will b very shocked if they used a old dvd master for a big film such as Jurassic Park. It was one of Spielberg's biggest movies so Universal wont skimp out on it. We should expect something special.

At the end of the day how many films get new transfers for blu-ray? Disney do a brilliant job but a good deal comes from old transfers (not that there's anything wrong with them). I'd love new masters made for BD but at the end of the day it's just too expensive. We're not even guaranteed new ones for Star Wars in September.

I'm always happy to be wrong though.

I would love a cast commentary for JP1, would love a Directors as well but Spielberg never does them to my knowledge.

Well what many fail to remember is most of the time older DVD masters were restored in HD as it is, so it makes sense to use that master. I wouldn't be suprised if the recent Bambi release was the master taken from the 2005 DVD, just in HD.

It doesn't really matter though where the master is taken from, so long as it's been thoroughly restored and is in HD, even if it's 10+ years old.

You're right, Speielberg does refuse to do them which is really annoying because it means we'll never have any Indiana Jones commentaries.

I remember Spielberg saying he watched Lawrence of Arabia with director David Lean and he talked all the way through it and Steven Speilberg just wanted to enjoy the movie with him. I'm not sure if that's an urban legend or not but it makes sense as to why he doesn't like commentaries. Sometimes I agree with him 100%, the extras on his films are very well done though and he contributes quite a lot.

I think I've heard that rumour somewhere before and I'm also not sure if it's true, but if is then, as you said, that could be why he doesn't like doing commentaries.

But it is true that the extras on his films are always enough to cover the making of the film, I just hope for Jurassic Park we get some new extras on this.

The latest Bambi is from a new master, just as all of the Blu-ray releases done by Disney for their animated movies. They're currently restoring all of the movies that need it, and give them new masters.
You can't restore a master. A master is made from whatever the source is (either film or digital) and is restored before a master is made. Since scanning techniques have been improving a lot the last few years, re-scanning a movie (at a higher resolution) would definitely improve the quality of the movie.
If Jurassic Park would be released using the same master for the DVD (that's eleven years old now) it wouldn't look good. A 4K scan would do nicely, and maybe something higher if they shot the digital effects on VistaVision, for that.

Oh, I know all that, I think I didn't word it very well. Sorry for any confusion.

You can never use HDTV to judge a Blu-Ray's quality, as has already been said. HD TV is no different to having your blu-ray player upscale a DVD for you.

I'm sure there was a series with him on TCM and he was sitting in a theatre with a leather jacket on (and maybe a baseball cap) and he was talking about how much he loved DVD, the movies and his career. This was years ago though.

exactly.
A new master is a must plus Uni aint a small time studio with limited cash so they can afford to do it on a movie like this. Which will sell for sure.

Spielberg mentions this in a special features segment on the Lawrence of Arabia 2-Disc set from a few years ago. He was actually enthusiatic of the fact that he got to hear Lean recant tales from the set etc. I remember thinking at the time that he should give us a chance to hear his thoughts on the making of his movies...
