Wouldn't be surprised if that figure also includes his checks for extra contents and promotional works, as I doubt a single actor could pull an average of $85M per film, as much as Depp is the "flagship" of the PoTC franchise

(PoTC video games, etc.)

I enjoy Depp's Jack Sparrow enough that I'll continue to see these in the theaters.
I also felt that the the negativity towards Pirates 4 was way overblown, and that it is a fun film. I as well would see a Pirates 5, at least it's coming out in about 4 years from now .

Promotion for a film, as far as I can recall, is Included in an actor's salary. Maybe a good portion of that $85M avg. includes BD/DVD sales also (?). If those sell a certain amount, that gets added into their extra income earned.

Well the quote on page 4 of this thread says pirates franchise so that'd include everything that he's getting money from to do with the franchise .

Contacts like Depps are usually a solid number to do the film, like $25M. Then the merchandising and DVD/Blu-ray sales on the back end are usually in percentages so it all depends on how much sell. It also means those royalties keep rolling in for years and years after the movie is forgotten about.

Actors of huge franchises like this often make more on the back end (say 10 years down the road) than they do for actually making the film. When Pirates 5 hits the theater and someone buys the very first Pirates movie to show thier kids that weren't around at the time.... Depp makes $ on it. The checks just keep showing up in his mail box for work he did years and years ago, plus any new work he is doing, like new interviews for the super duper, uncut directors, special anniversaray anthology box set that will no doubt be released at some point when the franchise wraps up.

It wouldn't suprise me, if, in the end, $85M per film ends up being accurate, but at this point since the money rolls in contiuousely, it can only be an extimate.

Strange huh?

Now, if you want to look at a sequel being made purely to sell merchandise, then look no further than Cars 2. The film is poor, yet Disney will rake in mega bucks for the toys. I wouldn't mind at all if the film was great (look at Toy Story 1, 2 and 3), but making a poor film in the cynical knowledge that the kids will be yammering for the toys - well, that's just greedy.

To be fair, Cars 2 turned out much better than what it sounded like it would have been. There was a massive shake up last year and John Lassater ended up taking the director's chair from the original director, to try and right the movie from where it was going. Was the money a cash grab? Sure. But, I still enjoyed it.

Wasnt really fun as much as boring, The first pirates was really good, then they stretched it and stretched it out, and by the looks of this thread they'll be stretching it even more, its kind of getting stale. plus in the fourth one...
[Show spoiler]Blackbeard was a total *****, so lame and he's supposed to be one of the most feared pirates of all time, yea right.. epic fail.

Now what do you think they'll do for the fifth one? Make him discover shambhala...

I honestly don't think Pirates 4 is total **** at all. The ones that were not good, were Pirates 2 and Pirates 3 . Pirates 1 and Pirates 4, in my opinion, are the best ones so far .

No, you put Pirates 2 in 2nd place, and i put Pirates 2 in 4th place. 4th place being last place meaning "least best".

I assume you meant "Contracts" above, but anyway, I know he was paid around $35M for the latest Pirates & that's just the UP FRONT money. Once it passes $_00M, his "points" (back-end) prob. started rolling in.

not to mention all the merchandising. They had to pay him for his likeness on toys, the ride, video games, sleep wear and more.
