Wow, a re-release and Ghibli's two worst films. I am so not excited.

I would have to disagree about Howl's Moving Castle, in fact, it's one of my favorite movies from Studio Ghibli. I do agree about Tales from Earthsea being one of their weakest movies, as well as Pom Poko for me. Tales from Earthsea should look quite stunning on blu-ray though, it's one of their nicest looking movies.

Howl's is completely disjointed, and Miyazaki let his usually-constrained left-wing inclinations run wild (most likely due to world events occuring at the time of production). Due to that, the entire film turned into a preachy mess, much more so than even Laputa. At least Laputa was entertaining as an adventure film, which is more than I can say for "Howl's".

As for Earthsea, that's what happens when you don't have enough good young talent in the pipeline and fall back on nepotism to fill positions. If Yoshifumi Kondō (director of "Whisper of the Heart") hadn't died in 1998, I doubt that Goro Miyazaki would've ever been chosen to direct a Ghibli film. A loss on both fronts if you ask me.

I'll be passing on Howl's Moving Castle. I think I'll just stick with the DVD for that one, even when the cheaper UK and US BDs come out. I just found it mediocre. Never saw Earthsea.

Like most people, I'm waiting for Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away, although Kiki's Delivery Service, Porco Rosso, or Only Yesterday would be welcome.

The Japanese Ponyo re-release copied the German artwork.

Where do you think the Germans got the source image from in the first place?

Oh my god! Yes! Howl is one of my favourite Ghibli and Earthsea is severely underrated if you ask me. Day one for sure!
I absolutely love the simplicity and iconography of these covers. Brilliant!

I wasn't sure about upgrading Howl, as I bought the expensive 4 disc DVD when it was released, but just looking at the discs, I see some bizarre laser-rot looking marks around all 4 discs. I guess I will have to be rebuying, but I will wait for the UK discs as I can wait a few extra months for it.

But I wonder why the Diana Wynn Jones interview and the Moebius interview were not listed...

So the ones that have English language are the Disney Dubs right? If so, then I may very well consider getting Laputa, Howl, and Whisper of the Heart. Though importing is quite expensive.
I just can't watch them any other way then through the dubs. Disney has done a fantastic job with them IMO, and they are just way more personable and enjoyable for me viewing in my own language and not having to read subs.

Waiting for Disney to release these is like waiting for gas prices to move back into the 1 to 2 dollar range. Sporadic chances and may never happen.

I personally can't sit through dubs. Just like I can't sit through a pixar movie dubbed into Japanese, I can't sit through a Ghibli film in anything else than Japanese.

I'm closer to the Jim Jarmusch sense of 'no dubbing'. It just doesn't work unless the work was planned on being dubbed in the first place. ("The Beast Of Yucca Flats"...? hm, bad example there.)

Looking at the covers for Howl's and Earthsea, I wonder why Ghibli is now putting the English title on the front?

Maybe its because the stories they are based on? I think Howl's is a british novel series, not sure about Earthsea.

The other reason is that they are trying to better market these to a global audience.

While its not my favorite, Howl is a great animated film. I think it has a lot of charm and for some reason I love watching her clean up that dingy old place. Must be cause I'm a clean freak. I actually used to turn this movie on a lot while I was cooking in the kitchen, I love a good orchestral score and this one really stands out.

Enough arguing about subs vs dubs. Argument has been done to death and we don't need arguing about it in the thread.

Really? deleting the posts? arg!

No one did answer my question that the dubs on these are the Disney ones right? Its just that some of these movies have had multiple dubbings.

Yes, they all use the Disney dub except for Arrietty which had no dub at the time it was released.

Finally found specifications on HK disc of Nausicaä. Different from the others but many say it "look" the same as JP but so much lower bitrate should be visible in fast moving scenes though I'm not sure 16bit vs 24bit audio is a audible difference.

JP LPCM 2.0 24bit 2304 kbps, AVC 39548 kbps
UK LPCM 2.0 24bit 1536 kbps, AVC 31170 kbps
HK LPCM 2.0 16bit 1536 kbps, AVC 25000 kbps
US DTS-HD 2.0 24bit 2110 kbps, AVC 24100 kbps
