It does, or at least I didn't see an option for no subtitles. Just picked it up. Great movie.

Fernando Meirelles has restored and recut the film.

But now there’s good news – and maybe nobody knows this yet – I just scanned the whole film in Los Angeles last month, and I’m doing a director’s cut version. Probably to be released in a year. I’m going to cut the film again. It’s a different film now. It’s amazing. I watch the image and say, “I can’t believe this is the same film.” I’m remixing. I’m changing some things. And the cut will be like a director’s cut. But the most impressive thing will be the image, which is much, much better.

Daniel Rezende was nominated for an Academy Award for Best editing on the film. Was he involved?

Maybe we'll get a restored theatrical version when Fernando Meirelles dies... in 30 years or so...

The way he describes it it doesn't sound good at all...

Is there any particular change to the content of the film that you really wanted to bring out?

Yeah, when we shot, the film was interrupted by sequences with statements from Rio people talking about the community. They would say lines that were linked to the story. But then we decided to keep just the story. The story had a good flow, so we decided just to let go. I might bring it back. That would be the biggest change. And then some scenes that I’ll reduce or recut.

Wish he would just give his directors cut to a boutique label that then also does a theatrical reconstruction restoration and release both versions.

Maybe Fernando Meirelles has some issues with City of God becoming such a influential film when he didn't have total control and others had a lot of input...

Almost as if he can't take all the credit...

Some clarification about the 4K resto:

1. Two versions will be produced: one will be faithful to the 2002 original; the other will introduce changes to the visuals and the sound effects;
2. The restoration will be A.I.-assisted.

Very glad they’re restoring the theatrical cut. Disappointed they’re going the AI route though. Hopefully that doesn’t mean they’re just upscaling the old telecine HDCam footage.
