Was a superb way to re-start the franchise without compromising intelligence for pure spectacle. Loved it, and hope Dawn goes the same way...

...worst possible scenario would be that it isn't as logical but as entertaining, I think, because they seem to understand what they want from this series now.

I love 'Rise', much more than I expected to. It was a very pleasant surprise, so I can't wait for 'Dawn'. I'm just glad to see the series back in the spotlight, and done well, much like 'Stat Trek'. Two of my favorite sci-fi series came back in huge ways, setting them up for great futures.

Jason Clarke to Star in DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES; Sequel Takes Place 15 Years After the First Film
Quote:

The sequel to 2011’s pleasantly surprising Rise of the Planet of the Apes has found its star. Though Dawn of the Planet of the Apes had a bit of a stumble in development as director Rupert Wyatt exited the film over creative differences, it appears that everything is now smoothly on track to begin production later this year under director Matt Reeves (Cloverfield, Let Me In). In the film’s first bit of casting, Zero Dark Thirty star Jason Clarke has been tapped to star in the pic, which will take place 15 years after the events of Rise of the Planet of the Apes.

Per Heat Vision, Jason Clarke has been set in an unspecified role in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. This is a most excellent bit of casting, as Clarke was fantastic in Kathryn Bigelow’s Zero Dark Thirty and did some great supporting work in last year’s Lawless. Though the plot of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is being kept under wraps, one focus of the story “is on the group of human scientists who are struggling to survive alone in San Francisco.” Another part of the pic will center on the ape Caesar (played by Andy Serkis) and his struggle to maintain dominance over his kingdom. The first film’s James Franco is not expected to return, and the 15-year time jump should make for some interesting developments in the rise of the titular apes.

The producers are currently working off a draft of the script by Mark Bomback (Live Free or Die Hard), and are eyeing a spring shoot. Clarke has deservedly been landing more high profile roles as of late, and he’s next set to film director William Monahan’s thriller Mojave opposite Dominic Cooper. He also appears in a supporting role in The Great Gatsby and as the main antagonist opposite Channing Tatum in the thriller White House Down. Fox’s Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is set to hit theaters in 3D on May 23, 2014.

Jason Clarke to Star in ‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes;’ Story Begins 15 Years After ‘Rise’ Ended

After many years of playing smaller roles, Jason Clarke started to move up in films like Public Enemies, and was terrific in Lawless, which helped him land in Zero Dark Thirty. It’s that last one that is pushing him into a new zone for casting directors, and he’s now landed the lead role in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.

The sequel to Rise of the Planet of the Apes will be directed by Matt Reeves (Cloverfield) and is set fifteen years after the end of Rise.

THR reports the casting, but doesn’t have news of Clarke’s specific role. The site does say,

Quote:
One focus is on the group of human scientists who are struggling to survive alone in San Francisco. Another aspect of the story is the struggle of intelligent ape Caesar, played by a returningAndy Serkis, to maintain dominance over his kingdom.
Mark Bomback scripted. Don’t expect to see much of James Franco’s character from Rise, if we see him at all. That 15-year gap between films will help write Franco out, too.

We’ll soon see Clarke in The Great Gatsby, in which he plays cuckolded auto mechanic George Wilson.

Someone was touched by Jason Clarke's love of monkeys in Zero Dark Thirty.

It's a shame Fox felt the need to re-write Rick & Amanda's drafts, since they are the ones who conceived of and wrote the reboot (and unlike many Hollywood films, their script remained largely intact). Hopefully they didn't ruin what was probably an already interesting and acceptable script.

Is there any word if James Franco will reprise his role? I know there was some concern if whether or not he would return since Rupert Wyatt is not coming back and Matt Reeves has been now chosen to direct the sequel.

From what I've read, he will be written off the sequel, but what do I know?

Won't bother me any. I liked the story involving his dad's battle with Parkinson's; but Franco felt flat to me.

Definitely can't wait for this film .

Good news. This is starting to look better and better all the time. Matt Reeves is a strong director, but it would have been nice for Rupert Wyatt to return because he did such a great job with the first.

i don't know if this is good news or not. I would love another movie but with the director leaving over "creative differences" and the main star not returning makes we wonder if we are going to get a decent movie or not. almost makes me think some exec had some great ideas and wouldn't let up so instead they found a director who won't argue. the ending made it pretty clear that the new virus was starting to spread, I could see Franco's character off somewhere doing research to find a way to sure it. never saw any of this new director's work so I can't say anything in that regard but I am a little concerned. but who knows - who would have thought Rise would have been so good? the fact that they want to do it in 3D doesn't impress me but there will be a 2D version I can watch.

They don't deserve nearly as much credit as they get. Paul Dehn deserves as much credit as Pierre Boulle does because 80% of the concepts in the first film was just reconfigured from stuff he established in "Escape" and "Conquest." And they didn't come up with the Alzheimer's stuff, that concept exists in pre-Burton Apes remake scripts going back to when Oliver Stone and Schwarzenegger were attached. It's like Fox let them loose with a copy of the book, a DVD box set and a bunch of unproductive screenplays and told them to write something that made sense of it all.

1+ Completely agree with you. You meant cure, right?
EDIT: I wish they shot it on film in 2-D. 3-D needs to die already!
It's just another way to increase ticket and BD prices!

I just re-watched the first one last night, and thought about the sequel.

I love the soundtrack of ROTPOTA.

The change of director and the likely no-show of James Franco have me a bit worried though. Let's hope for the best and expect the worst.
