LOL! That's completely daft. You use Top 20 in a way that no published Top xx list works. If someone handed me a list of their Top 20 restaurants, I wouldn't expect a place they got food poisoning to be listed, just to make the list up to 20!

Why not? I might have seen 19 brilliant movies and one stinker this year. Alternatively I might have seen one brilliant one and 19 stinkers. How do you know what #16 is like if I give you a list of 20 no matter what?

I'm sure. Doesn't mean the results should be skewed by people including movies they hated just to make up the numbers.

Wow, came to edit my list a bit, and saw all this arguments. Didn't expect that from a ranking thread

I think both sides do have merit. But I'm for listing everything that you saw.

Remember, this is just for fun. And this is a community voting, so your vote alone is not going to change a bad movie to a high ranking one. If it truly is a bad movie, then it's not going to be ranked high or even be ranked. But if it does, then it just mean your opinion is the minority or the movie did really good job on marketing. Seriously, how many of this ranking did we do, and how many times did it come out exactly how you wanted it to be? This is ranking of opinion - it can't satisfy everybody. And thankfully because lot of us vote, your vote alone is not going to determine it.

So relax, and do whatever you want. But please stop with this argument. Because I want to see everybody's list, not read some argument. And seriously, this list is just for fun.

Personally, I like the list to include everything we saw. When one is comparing data, it is ideal to compare similar data - not one that has 20 to one that only has 5.
It would also show what kind of movies are being seen. For whatever the reason - marketing, boy/girlfriend made them, word of mouth, etc. I certainly didn't think Pirates & Transformers are one of the best movies, but I did see it because it's big budget one that benefited from big screen and sound. So it did barely make my list. But even if it goes higher in the final list, I'm not going to blame myself or others that I gave few points to it, because I gave more points toward movies that I liked better.

no "published top xx list" would be made if the person making it hadnt seen enough movies in the first place. who would take that seriously? you have plenty of time to see more movies, maybe if you spent the energy you exhaust on complaining on watching some of the excellent films that came out this year you wouldnt be in this position.
i for one am thankful that MarkJ has organized this for everyone to enjoy. these top 20 lists are always fun. im done baiting trolls (i dont know why i got sucked into this in the first place) all i can say is if you really cant get over the rules then make your own thread.

I would agree, but lower on the list films get less points, plus if you've only seen 17-19 good films, those bad films won't get many points regardless. Plus there is enough time to add extra films.

These Community Top 20 lists have been going on for 3 years and we've had no complaints, so if you've got a problem, where were you 3 years ago!

Yet you're advocating exactly that, make a top 20 list, accepting submissions from people who haven't seen 20 movies. No problem with that per se, as long as they're not forced to submit 20, because it skews the results.

I refer you back to post #49 by the OP MarkJ who asked:

So how do you guys think that I should tally a list if someone posts less than 20 films?

I've already posted my top 10. I'm simply responding to his question. Try to keep up with what's going on before accusing me of trolling.

I was certainly around here 3 years ago, check my join date. The OP asked for input on how it should be handled, and I've posted my opinion. If I had noticed the thread back then my opinion would the same as it is now.

thats not what im saying at all. im talking about "published top xx lists" ie from professional film critics, not internet forum community members creating lists for fun.

this has NOTHING to do with what ive been saying. all ive said is that theres no reason to leave off movies YOU HAVE SEEN because you didnt like them if those are the only 20 movies youve seen. theres no reason to leave any movie off your list. if you saw it, it counts. not quite rocket science.

Of course there is. Let me give you an example to show you why it skews the results.

You have 25 people. 24 people saw "Sucker Punch" and absolutely hated it, it was one of the worst movies they saw all year, but they have to list it somewhere. They list it at #20. The other person loves "L'Illusioniste", best film they've seen all year. They list it at #1.

24 people listing a film they loathe completely outweighs the scoring of a film that someone thought was best of the year.

All that's going to happen with this system is that movies with larger numbers of viewers are going to outrank those with fewer viewers, regardless of their quality.

You know, if everyone posted their personal top 10, we would still be able to get community top 20 as long as 20 movies receive votes. Does that make sense?

Yeah that's why I'm thinking of making the rule that if you post 10-20 films, they will be worth the full amount (so your #1 film would be worth 20). However if you post less than 10, they'll be pushed down to the 10 position (so your #1 film would be worth 10 instead of 20).

Does that seem like a good compromise for everyone? The constant bickering is getting old, so I think this is the best middle ground.

I understand lemonski's point and agree to an extent. It's pretty sad to see how few lists have I Saw the Devil on them, almost certainly because not enough people have seen it. I'll be happy to see it make the top 20, even though it's average ranking should be really high.

That said, if someone hasn't seen 20 movies this year that they liked, they really aren't trying very hard. I've seen about 70 and liked the vast majority of them, since I refuse to waste time on movies I know will be mediocre at best.

It's possible that my bad attitude helps that, since I refuse to go see a shitty movie to placate a friend. I see a lot of people saying their friend/girlfriend dragged them to see Shitty Movie of the Week. To those people I say "I have better things to do. I'm eating glass that night."

I guess what I'm saying is that yeah, it sucks that the popular movies will undoubtedly receive more points than most of the truly good movies. We can fight that by trying harder to give our money to the right movies, instead of Battle: Los Angeles and Green Lantern.

MOST of the movies I would consider watching from 2011 aren't out on home video and do not play in theaters around me. Like within 150 miles. Stop with your "oh you have plenty of time to watch them" rant, you can't watch them if they're not available! Plus, some of us have jobs, families, etc. that we can't just sit down and watch 15 movies a month.

Plus, who's to say I won't end up with 20 on my list. I'm saying RIGHT NOW I don't feel there's 20 worth voting for. Maybe I'll watch 6 movies before the deadline that I feel are worth it. If anything, you're the one that's going nuts for no reason, since we have quite a bit of time to see other movies, as you say, then our lists are not complete, and therefore should not be harped on. Hell, I even said myself that my list is INCOMPLETE at this moment.

And those Top 20 lists from the last 3 years? I don't know about all of them, but I do know that most accepted lists without 20 movies. And it was just scored normally until the end of the list. Nobody had a problem with that then. So... where were you the last 3 years?!? If we hadn't said "we're leaving movies off" you wouldn't have even known why the list wasn't a full 20, so no difference there. Most of those movies were not movies I would have seen on my own, so why count them? I'm not going to consider drivel like the Twilight series to go in my top 20 just because you think I should.

this sounds like a perfect compromise. the bickering has indeed gotten old. i know ive contributed to it but only because i think its really rude that people have to argue and complain about something you did for everyone to enjoy and for some reason i keep being made out to be the bad guy.

once again, not at all what ive been saying.
If what I was saying isn't based on what you were saying (which it was, for the most part, if you read your own posts... some other stuff was thrown in from other posts on your side of this stupid argument), then step off, and just let it go. If you have nothing against the reasons we have for not listing them, why go berserk because we don't think they should be on the list? The lists from the last 3 years were brought up, and those lists allowed less than 20, so why all the sudden does it have to be "YOU MUST HAVE 20!!!!!!!!AAAAARRGHHFHE IOWNTHEINTERNET!!!!!!!"

In fact, in those other lists, if someone had seen only 20, and they list the crap movies they've seen, then you get the other idiots saying "I can't believe you have Twilight on your list" or "what a horrible list, do you even have any taste?". So either way we're going to have someone going stupid over it, we might as well only include movies that WE LIKE. And those other lists used the same scoring, but whatever. I'm done with this stupid argument.

I agree with both sides of this argument but I have to say, brogan, you seem to be the one raging out here.
