Blueprint of Hogwarts Castle

Printed on non-tear paper, this detailed blueprint of Hogwarts castle from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows™ is 22" x 36". Sepia-toned, it includes photo and art insets of specific locations inside and around the castle.

Interview with Art Director, Gary Tomkins

What is your background?
I've worked in the Art Department for many years on a wide range of films, including Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, Tim Burton's Sleepy Hollow, all of the Harry Potter films and more recently Steven Spielberg's War Horse

What was your specific role in the Harry Potter art department?
As well as working on lots of the full-sized sets on all eight Potter films, I looked after the model unit requirements, transforming Stuart Craig's ideas and sketches into architectural working drawings (blueprints), and supervising the construction of not only the Hogwarts castle model, but Hogsmeade village, the Weasley house, Privet Drive and others.

What made your experience in the Harry Potter art department different from other jobs you’ve had previously and since?
My experience in the Potter art department was unique in the way that sets and models continued to be used on more than one film, unlike the usual practice of consigning everything to the skip once it's been shot! It was also unique to work with the same group of people for such a long time. It's something that's been said many times before, but it really did feel like a large family after ten years of working at Leavesden.

Over the years, what were some of your favorite designs, and why?
Apart from Hogwarts castle itself, which has become quite an iconic building, my favourite miniature has to be Hogsmeade village which, although being seen only fleetingly in the films, had an incredible amount of detail, including fully dressed shop windows, working lights, and even tiny footprints in the (false) snow!

What is the purpose of blueprints for production? How many blueprints are produced for a film?
The reason architectural working drawings, or blueprints, are produced on a film is to allow the carpenters, plasterers and model-makers to make the sets and miniatures exactly as the designer intended. All the views of a set or miniature are drawn and dimensioned along with dozens of details of doors, windows, and whatever else is required to convey the ideas of the art department. During the course of all eight Potter films, over 10 years, 8395 working drawings were produced for the sets and miniatures!

Were there any challenges in the creation of the Hogwarts castle blueprints?
The main challenges were the changes that were made from one film to the next. Because of changing requirements in each new script, and the fact that not all of the books had been written when we initially built Hogwarts, we had to introduce new elements, such as the prison tower, Owlery, astronomy tower, viaduct and courtyards as they were required by the story. Integrating these into an existing and well-known building like Hogwarts without destroying its overall look was quite a challenge.

What are you doing now?
I am working again with Stuart Craig on new and exciting projects!

Hah! So I was right to question why HP5 would be carrying a special features DVD (pre-server crash), because the amount of discs remaining simply wouldn't support it, not without some major re-encoding of the Deathly Hallows flicks.

As far as I can tell all the US Ultimate Editions released so far have had Spanish soundtracks (not in HD just Dolby Digital) and subtitles.

I'm not 100% sure about the specifications of the UK releases though. They've been released now (apart from the last two films?), so hopefully members who own the titles could update their audio and subtitle information.

I'd go next month if I weren't going to London Film & Comic Con. I can't fit the Harry Potter tour into the budget.

Is that map in colour or just a two tone color?

I ask because on this picture I can't tell if the map with the question mark is the map in question
It looks more colourful.

Sorry I only mentioned the map because. It was in one of the videos someone posted, didn't mean I thought it was in the set, but yes it is near enough two tone, certainly no colour like in the map circled, the locket circled Odin sale at studios as well, 40, though theirs are in a case. Still on the fence about this set , it looks nice but worried the box is cardboard, and that the extra items are cheaper versions of existing things.....
