![]() Despite being one of the most widely viewed 3D movies, and the highest grossing film of all time, viewers still have not been able to buy Avatar on Blu-ray 3D by itself (without paying high prices to resellers) due to an exclusive pack-in deal with Panasonic, but that will change this fall. Fox just announced the Avatar Blu-ray 3D Collector's Edition will debut globally October 15th, and release in North America October 16th. There's no word on any extra special features, as producer Jon Landau indicates in the press release (included after the break) it will contain the theatrical cut of the flick inside special packaging. Originally, the delay in releasing the movie widely on disc in 3D was blamed on a lack of 3DTVs in homes. We'll see if the prospect of watching the $2.7 billion juggernaut "the way it was meant to be seen" according to director James Cameron, nudges more buyers towards a new display this fall. Check below for a video clip of Cameron sharing the news to the movie's fans on Facebook, plus an extra treat that didn't make it into the movie. It's about time
![]() I did hope the eventual 3D release would include the extended 2D film as well as all the bonus features from the previous extended edition since I never picked that up thinking they would be included on the 3D release. |

Brilliant - been holding off on getting any version of Avatar because I wanted the 3D version. I don't yet have a 3D TV but I'm planning on upgrading in the next year and so have slowly been future-proofing where I can to avoid double-dipping if and when the times comes. Avatar being the ultimate 3D film is a no-brainer to me - as much as I enjoy the film it's the 3D bit that really makes the whole experience for me. Have never felt the need to watch it in 2D so avoiding the other releases wasn't difficult.
I don't mind if it's just the theatrical version, I saw the Extended Edition in IMAX 3D last summer, it was amazing but there wasn't enough difference between the two versions for me to miss anything when I watch the theatrical. Plus it's long enough as it is... |

I picked up this 3D edition recently and I still have the standard edition.
I am wondering as the 3D and 2D versions are both on the same disc (on the 3D version) does the standalone 2D bluray have a better byte rate because the feature has the whole disc to itself, or is there any noticeable difference in PQ? I'm curious as I want to free up shelf space but not sure if I still need to hang-on to both editions. ![]() ![]() Last edited by Lea74; 05-12-2020 at 11:07 AM. |

So a standalone 2D encode will usually have better picture quality. |
