Sanctum is awesome 3D, similar to Golden Age depth. Sometimes, it seems like reviewers were confused about whether they were rating the shape and use of 3D or rating the PQ twice.
Dial M for Murder and My Bloody Valentine were also sorely underrated by most reviewers. Probably The Polar Express and Fright Night too although there are times when they go too flat. Last edited by BleedOrange11; 04-16-2016 at 09:09 AM. |

I'll add Edge Of Tomorrow - I always seem to find myself flinching as debris hurtles toward and past the viewer in a natural way (not forced/tacky or slow-mo'd like some movies) I still think its some of the best utilised 3d effect I've seen and it kind off puts you in the action...

Also enjoyed the high medium and some strong 3D in much of Edge of Tomorrow.
I'll say (Captain America) Winter Soldier's mostly medium 3D was underrated after watching it a few times and being satisfied though not thrilled by it. Clearly they could have pushed it more, but the 3D is better than a number of mild 3D films from years before, and not far off from the 3D from Cap Am 1. |

Oh absolutely good call. That's a really terrific 3D conversion and a very underrated one. They did a great job and the full screen ratio makes it even better. Damn good movie too with Hemsworth's ropey accent being the only major downside, well that and some horrible green screen work.

When I saw Need for Speed in 3D in the theater, I thought it was one of the best 3D conversions I'd ever seen. The 3D in the racing scenes added a significant boost of visceral energy. I believe it's underrated because I don't think I've ever seen anyone on these boards praise it, and I think it deserves more attention.

Being the 3D in I Robot was so unfairly bashed, many including myself avoided it when we shouldn't.
Other discs might have also been panned unfairly as well. This is not to say the 3D might not be as strong or imaginative as it could have been but neither that the 3D did so little above its 2D counterpart to make it not worth buying. There is a difference having a negative opinion regarding certain aspects of the 3D and then putting down the entire 3D altogether because of it. Man of Steel, Green Lantern and Star Trek Into Darkness come to mind. It was said there was depth but 3D didn't add anything to the experience. Those were over exaggerations. The adding of depth provided great immersion. Wolf Totem was said to have little depth - which I found to be untrue. So does anyone have a disc where the 3D (not the story or acting) was unfairly put down maybe causing us to pass it up? I know there are mixed feelings about Predator. I'll keep quiet on that one. ![]() |

Thanks for the nice words. Often we have talked about discs receiving rave 3D reviews which many of us felt were over exaggerations. Now its time to reverse the tables. Even limited 3D does not mean its to be avoided. I have "Death of a Samurai" which is soft throughout. I liked the film and was happy it was in 3D even if it was subtle. |

I've always felt that the first Thor got a bad rap for it's 3D. When it first came out, I saw some people saying they thought they put in the 2d version and that there was no depth at all which is totally false.
I actually skipped the initial release because the vast majority of opinions were along those lines and got it when I bought the Phase 1 box set. I was pleasantly surprised and enjoyed the movie more in 3d than 2d. |

Honestly depth does not impress me at all. Star Wars Rogue One is a great example of that. I would have been just as happy watching the regular blu-ray and was upset that I wasted the extra money for the 3D version.
Ideally an example like How to Train Your Dragon is what I believe 3D should be. Another great example of my ideal 3D experience would be Maleficent... |
