Yeah, dude is pushing 70. He's obviously not going to direct any future Star Wars movies himself and he'd be foolish to not cash in on the franchise's popularity now rather than leave it in mothballs for another decade while the value declines. It's a very wise business move.

He's 68 and he was already making at least $90 million a year (much more in previous years) so I'm pretty sure he had enough money to last him and his family a lifetime. I honestly didn't think he'd ever let someone else take control over his company

And even worse, Indiana Jones. Remember, LucasFilm owns the sole rights to Jones. What about that and Paramount's distribution deal with that property?

Lucas has said in a lot of interviews that he doesn't want his kids getting a free ride on Star Wars.

And really only the one daughter has any interest in doing anything with Star Wars. She writes for Clone Wars

The option probably exists for them to be involved in the company still. But it looks like they're happy earning their own way.

He probably wants to stop dealing with anything involving Star Wars and spend time with that lovely girlfriend of his.

He is 68, after all. I don't think he has the drive / inclination to continue directing / producing films at this point, plus, he did hint at retirement prior to the release of "Red Tails". I think the time is right for him to hand over the reins of the SW franchise to someone else, and Disney has the resources to inject some life into a property that has stagnated in recent years.

No word on the plot for the new film, which follows "Return of the Jedi." Rumors are it will focus on the children of Han Solo and Leia Organa, who will face a new alien threat.
